175s taken out of service and major revision to timetable:

Seems the 175 services will be limited to:

2C05 EXD - PNZ
2E11 PNZ - EXD
2C32 EXD - PNZ
2E28 PNZ - EXD

So the same as it has been recently.

Hopefully this 3 month buffer period will be used wisely to get the units working in time for the December timetable change and hopefully Wolverton send some reliable units!

What's your alternative suggestion to quickly address GWR's rolling stock shortage?
There aren't any and DfT are in no great hurry to buy new trains even then it will take years to build.

175006 was one of the units on the Penzance to Exeter diagram.

Procurement of new stock seems to take longer and longer - look at the process for simply choosing a supplier for stock for Scotrail's BEMU fleet.

It doesn't help that the requirements demanded of the new trains are more complex than ever. Bimodes, BEMUs, etc.

And then again, the longer you delay the introduction of a new fleet, the longer you put off having to pay for it, which for a cash strapped DfT is a very attractive proposition. And cynically, once you see the introduction date goes beyond the date of the next general election, do you really want to run the risk of your successors taking all the credit for the investment that you made?

One thing that I've just thought of is how come the units haven't been signed off for multiple running using the SDO systems yet? One thing I had noticed is that the units are sometimes being overloaded (particularly the 2-car units) and if a unit is signed off as service ready during this temporary timetable, they can't even run it in multiple on the one diagram to increase capacity yet. Any ideas as to why?

The 175's SDO is a very limited system via the "TUDI" switch which would be operated in the rear cab of the front unit, this prevents the doors releasing on the trailing unit(s) behind the cab with the "TUDI" switch operated. For a two unit formation the guard would need to be in the leading unit to operate the "TUDI" switch, leaving no traincrew in the rear unit, at a guess this could be an issue.

Knowing the railway, they'll spend months getting the 175's right and just as they achieve it..... They'll withdraw them
Haha yes that’s how it works. Same as signalboxes would get repainted shortly before abolishment. Keeping up with tradition.

Presumably a magical incantation along the lines of abra cadabra heed my call, summon enough DMUs for all!?

Maybe the spell abra coradia may help turn the fleet around :)

Internally, they are fantastic, i'll give you that, but mechanically they've always been absolute dogs. It's not the drivers it's those transmissions and cooler groups.

Agreed cooler groups have had issues but transmissions, gearboxes and final drives I don`t` believe have been very problematic. Unless you can tell me otherwise ?
The Class 175 is as fragile as spun glass

I disagree that they have been that bad overall

When are GWR going to concede defeat woth the 175's. They're clapped out rotting old bangers like all UK Coradia 1000's

I hope that GWR don`t give up with them and I suspect they won`t, once they have overcome the current availability and reliability problems with the correct help and support along with the maintenance teams becoming more familiar with 175s I cant see why they they cannot replicate the availability and reliability seen at TfW.
There have and possibly still are some body corrosion problems but they are not insurmountable at all.

Internally, the 175 is a great train. Spacious, airy, good seat alignment, and good suspension and comfort, but it's traction mechanics are the stuff of an engineers nightmare, especially when said engineer realises the services GWR are asking them to operate. Mechanically, they're absolute dogs. Underpowered, not enough tractive effort to pull the skin off a rice pudding, a mismatched engine/transmission combo, needing their guts absolutely ragged out on tough climbs, diminuative cooler groups, fire prone, and unsuited to anything but operating on limited stop, long distance cruising on flat ground in cold weather. Oh and they can't pull full power unless the driver hits to boost button and shutsdown half the onboard services. They should have gone to an appropriate service like Northerns Scarborough to Sheffield, Hull to Doncaster, and Bridlington to York services supplementing the 170's and replacing 158's, 155's and 150's where the would spend their time on flat ground in the cooler north of England able to spend like cruising.

006 completing the Newquay diagram just crossed Royal Albert Bridge. This train must be ok in the dark.

Sunday, looks like 115 on 5N08 to pick up Newquay working passed Saltash camera at 0930 for those who can turn the camera back. I used to be able to do it but I think you have to be a subscriber.

150261 and 800318 operating the other two diagrams today.
Shows how the lack of 175s is causing stock chaos, with a 2car 150 and a 9car IET substituting.

Also having effect on services that should by now have had displaced 158s
eg 1F09 09:18 Cardiff - Portsmouth (just a 2car 158)
with following train 1F11 being 5car class 165

Its a shame GWR are having such major problems with the 175s. They were very nice units internally but ATW and then TFW had no end of issues with them.

So pretty much like when TFW had to take them out of service and there was an abundance of Sprinters covering.

Lets hope this can be sorted soon.

4 units out tomorrow...
Well, 1 in service and 3 on milage accumulation BUT it's better than what we've seen the past few weeks anyway
175009/175011/175113 on milage runs
175115 on diagram starting 2C05 EXD - PNZ

Almost a month since 009 appeared so nice to see another returnee. Good to see the teams at Laira working towards a result.

175115 appears to have now gone into the siding at Par instead of going empty back to Laira. Also not showing for 2C05 tomorrow now.
