With the state the Adelantes are in now, is it not inevitable that the 175/180 fleets will both be scrapped before 150s?? This thread just seems to be stuck on an endless loop of suggestions on them going to either Northern or Chiltern during a time where the DFT is so persistent on cost cutting.

RE Northern. It’s been mentioned but why would we be adding yet another fleet to its allocation? It’s already got the biggest variety in the country so to add yet another would be difficult to justify. Granted the Sprinters won’t last forever however the cheapest thing to do is to keep what they have for now and get more 158s if available, as the cost in training would be lower. Let’s face it, they’ll last longer than 175s anyway. Brand new stock would be better longer term, and loosely thinking I’d even suggest they wait for when more 170s are up for grabs. They’d be perfect for Leeds to Notts/Lincoln and Hull to Halifax/York. That’s without even mentioning any future electrification. Do the TFW 158s have a future? If not then it’s a no brained that these are used to replace the 155s and the worst of the 156s.

RE EMR. There’s no need for them to take on any 175s. The planned allocation of 158/170 should work okay and as I mentioned there’s no need to spend so much money on taking on a fleet that wouldn’t last as long as the 158 anyway

RE Chiltern. The target audience for this operator is the commuter. It’s a slow route and the 165/168s work perfectly to my knowledge (unless someone can say otherwise). I doubt the loco hauled sets will have a short term replacement, but ideally they’d be better off with a unit that’s futureproof; something that’s good for todays infrastructure but also easily convertible for electrification if/when it happens. Getting my crayons out, but if CAF did a bi-mode Civity with gangways we’d be laughing

RE Crosscountry. Again the 170s are only worth replacing if the new stock is suited to the route and preferably brand new. The work they do has very specific demands and can’t warrant an intercity train but also can’t use commuter stock. The 175 wouldn’t fit with the criteria.

And before we go down anymore routes regarding Southern, Merseyrail, or even C2C, it’s needless to say really! As much as I like the Adelante, there just isn’t the need for them anymore. They’re expensive to run compared to similar stock, it wouldn’t be worth the training or the extra train type wherever they go, especially overseas, and I sincerely doubt they’ll outlive a Sprinter no matter how hard people hope
GWR want the 158s because of existing compatibility reasons, so Northern won’t be getting any more 15x and some of those 150s might not make it to 2025, let alone longer.
175s are perfect for Chiltern because they can run EWR and solve their loco issue at the same time.

They have been an obvious replacement option for years, particularly for 155s and 156s, and they're probably more suited to limited stop Manchester-Cumbria services than 195s. The corrosion problem and the cost of repair is obviously a big obstacle when combined with the cost of staff training.
It is common knowledge that Northern’s 15x replacement (and 769 too) is being looked at with new build.

What is being looked for are one fleet of compatible units with at least 2 forms of propulsion, one being electric, the other battery or diesel. The Teeside Hydrogen plan is dead in the water at the moment.

Really? I thought I read somewhere that the handful of Adelantes with EMR were performing fairly well, and I can't recall anything about Grand Central wanting rid of theirs.

Again, really? The 175s are still about 10 years newer than the 158s - is the corrosion that bad that the 175s will really be life expired before 158s (admittedly the latter are aluminium-bodied I think, which might give them a longer life than steel-bodied vehicles)?

I disagree - as long as you refurbish the seats (the padding has gone in some I think) class 175s would be a perfect fit for the Cardiff-Nottingham service if you ask me - a big improvement on 170s. I would say the same for Birmingham-Stansted but unfortunately that route needs stock which is permitted to run at Sprinter-differential speeds which rules out the 175s.

Cross Country has 22 x 3 car 170s and 7 x 2 car 170s. The are only 16 x 3 car 175s and 11 x 2 car 175s so there would be a decrease in capacity.

They aren't doing particularly well and aren't in that good condition.

The 170s also have to cover the Birmingham-Leicester/Nottingham stopping services though, which I wouldn't suggest using 175s on.

Although hearsay but I’ve been told that EMR are on the verge of shortening another unit to 4 car because of various issues. Grand Central have also a set full of “bad” coaches which can’t be used. 180103 I believe. I seriously believe at least the first of the Adelante range will be scrapped before the first 158s at least

Similar point to above but the easier option would be to just keep hold of the 170s until they’re ready for the scrapper. As mentioned above I don’t think there are enough 175s to replace the full crosscountry 170 fleet (although haven’t counted myself)

The 180s are basket cases more so than the 175s, full of rot and the systems are n better, there a threads about them on here, EMR have even looked at taking on some ex AWC 221s instead.

158s and for that matter 165\6 are aluminium and aren't in theory subject to corrosion the issue there is cracking due to fatigue, AIUI there are regular small welding jobs done on 158s

Ah 170s much better than 175s, don't see it really, the 170s need a good interior refresh just like the voyagers but the door positions provide quick loading and a capacity buffer when operating into Birmingham in the peaks.

The stoppers interwork with the fasts so unless you’re looking at re-writing New Street and by default the rest of the country plus all the associated crew/fitter training just to get your favourite units on the fasts it’s a very bad idea.

The 175's have all recently had a refresh, so interior wise there's plenty of life left in them. Their reliability also isn't that bad when they're maintained well. Which is the big issue. If anyone were to take them on, they would be taking on a relatively small and niche fleet. When TfW took on the 170's, they may have been a small fleet in TfW but there are lots of them throughout the country so parts easier to source. 175's are different. It would be a huge cost to take them on, open a maintenance base, and keep them maintained.

The Class 175s were built with steel-bodied vehicle shells from Spain, with no corrosion protection applied - the damp British climate has not been kind to them. The body shells are said to be in a shocking condition, so the scrapyard may be the only suitable place for these units once they leave TFW, which seems a massive shame as they are very comfortable from a passenger point of view.

The 175s are not necessarily my favourite units, but if you look back a few pages you'll see that I suggested having them sit around for an hour at Nottingham between runs or (flat crossing permitting) extending the Cardiff service to Lincoln. That wouldn't require rewriting New Street.

Maybe I was just having a bad day, but I made a fairly short trip once (think it was Newport or Severn Tunnel Junction to Gloucester, or vice-versa) on an XC 170 and was very glad to get off the damn thing. The legroom was absolutely dire - if anything it seemed even worse than a 150/153/Pacer (which are also dire). Strangely other 170s don't seem quite as bad (or maybe I just managed to grab a table bay all the other times?) so do XC have some with an extra row or two squeesed in? I know they have one fewer toilet on XC 170s compared to 175s or the TfW 170s. As for the doors, Voyagers also operate out of Birmingham in the peaks - one busy station is no excuse for downgrading the rest of the journey experience on a long route. If you have a local service in an urban area, stopping 15 times in an hour, then you might need to prioritise dwell times but please - not on an inter-urban (semi-)fast (ie. regional express) service.

Did the TfW refresh include re-padding the seats on the 175s? If not, that needs doing as some of the seats have a nasty hard rod sticking into your back where the padding has gone.

Re. maintainence, EMR have taken on just four class 180s and the challange of maintaining them, so as long as the 27 class 175s can be kept together then where there's a will there should be a way, unless these corrosion problems cannot be put right.

Exactly: a massive shame for the passenger if these units have to go for scrap, but hopefully the corrosion can be sorted. Some (admittedly much older, but presumably had corriosion-protection from new) stock (mark 3s spring to mind) has been said to be in a shocking condition before but has been repaired.

I was thinking more the stopper from Leicester arrives at New Street and forms the Stansted and vice versa. To separate out the stopper from the express therefore requires a rewrite unless it isn’t diagrammed this way anymore of course.

Could the services not be extended to Swansea as an alternative to avoid terminating at Cardiff which has its own issues or using the bay platform at Bridgend

As I understand it 175s wouldn't be a good fit for the Stansted service anyway, as it needs stock which can do Sprinter differential speeds, so the Cardiff workings are the only place XC could really make use of the 175s. A pitty as the Stansted service deserves better stock really - maybe it will get some if the Midlands plans with a more frequent Birmingham-Leicester service (possibly from Moor Street instead of New Street) come off.

XC do run a mixture of 170s the 170\1 are the original 170s ordered by Midland Mainline after the first batch of Chiltern 168s. Then there are the later 170\6 which were ordered by Central Trains plus the two odd 170 397/398 Porterbrook speculative builds.
So you might well have experienced an unrepresentative seat compared to those available.

I noticed at least 5 substitutions today - 2 of which were 158s. Not a good day for 175 being available.

The ex MML ones did have an extra row as built, legroom was awful.

Yet 175116 somehow got diagramed to Pembroke dock and presumably Fishguard fingers crossed things improve but at least the substitutions were 158s twice they're still nice trains

Yes i do like the 158s a lot. Infact before the 175s had their refurbishment the 158s were my favourites from ATW/TFW.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Looks to be a few more 175s out today than yesterday and at least one of the substitutions is a 158. There was also a pair of 158s working a Carmarthen to Cardiff but one set was taken off in Swansea. For Pembroke Dock perhaps? Cant think what else would be starting from Swansea other than HOWL which 158s cant do.

There was also a 175 on the extra 1230 Swansea-Cardiff which i assume is because of the Rugby in Cardiff.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

EDIT looking at RTT the pair of 158s is down as 158824 twice so either an error with the same one listed twice or it ran as a single 158 for the duration of the journey.

Yes there was a further 158 working to Pembroke dock today that however formed off the cardiff-Pembroke dock arriving at 10:15

As TfW are starting to remove the 175's, Only 3 TOC that i can think of that could potentiality make its way to, Otherwise a possibility on Ramining with TfW or donate to the scrap god or Parcel/Test/Expereiments etc or possibly to East West Rail / Open Access.

Heres the image of the three TOC on how it could look if they ever moved to any of them, Hope you like.

I think that very good image of the Chiltern one shows they’d look very smart in Chiltern livery. They don’t look half as bad as I thought they would in Northern either.

There is, as it happens, a dedicated thread for the discussion of the Class 175’s future found in Speculative Discussion :)

It's very unlikely- but I'd welcome 175s being added to Northern's fleet of trains. Even 3-car 195s are often very near full, if not full and standing- particularly on the Calder Valley services- Blackpool to York/Manchester to Leeds via Todmorden services. It'll of course be even busier on Summer Saturdays, particularly to/from Blackpool. So 175s could be used to supplement the 195s- allowing more 195s to double up for more capacity.

As I say though it won't happen- who would pay for this?

I still think Chiltern as a replacement for the much maligned 68 sets, but as we’ve said before the DfT seem to prefer withdrawals without replacement.

If you were going to do parcels experiements, I would suggest that the 197s (with their wider doors and reduced passenger accomodation) would be a better choice for the parcels work with the 175s retained for the passenger workings.

Rather than replacing some of the 195s on the York-Blackpool route and doubling-up others, I would aim to replace ALL the 195s on York-Blackpool with 175s and cascade the 195s to the stopping services through Warrington Central, allowing Northern to withdraw 150/1s (possibly after salvaging the seats since the modern railway don't appear to be able to buy new seats with cusioning at the moment).

With a pinch of salt, I think the Class 175/0 (2 cars) could be transferred to operate on West of England service, allowing the 158s to be transferred to other operators (perhaps EMR)? Difficulty is the incompatibility between the two, as well as not having enough to replace all of the 159s, so the remaining 170/1s would not be counted here.

Probably need a gritting lorry, not a pinch of salt, for that to work out.

EMR would also be ideal for the 175 to replace the 158. There are 27 of them vs 26 158's, Plus about half of them are already 3 cars so they can easily can work in 4-6 cars, has a higher top speed, larger toilets etc. Seating Capacity is also very similar (134 per 2 car vs 158's 138 ish). Im not sure the acceleration between the two but i expect that'll also be similar.
A small section of first class on the 3 car set?

I think EMR passangers on the Norwich - Liverpool service would welcome these type of trains, Only missing is the end gangway.

The 158 along with TfW's 158 (24) which are also going could move to Northern To replace 155/156's even though all the 158 from both TOC wont be enough to replace all of them so the remaining to replace by 150/195 which would leave northen with 150/158/170 and 195 diesel fleet.

GWR to cover Cardiff - Portsmouth route, much more suitable than 158/166 units. The cascaded 158's can remain with GWR to help replace the HST's and the 166's can be swapped around GWR to release 165's to Chiltern and in turn allow replacement of their LHCS.

Also approach TfW to start them back at Swansea/Carmarthen or link them to the two hourly Cardiff - Milford Haven service giving a direct South Wales - Bristol - Portsmouth service. Didn't TfW want an extra Cardiff - Bristol service too?
