Class 172 Production Progress

Hi,

Just by chance I saw a Chiltern Rail 172 speed past my office window on Friday afternoon - not the kind of thing I'd have expected since it's just to the west of Maidenhead on the main lines out of Paddington !

So putting 2 and 2 together this would have been 172101 heading west through Maidenhead shortly after 15:15. Seemed to be going fairly fast compared to the normal 165/166 units.

Ah, I must have just missed it passing through Reading then. Didn't get there till 15:45 and jumped on the 15:48 to Newbury. So it must have just gone into the depot as I went past it.

But they will work together with Chiltern's 165s, which are the same as 166s. It may be that Chiltern couldn't find the space and / or a spare 166 to do the tests, whereas FGW at Reading might have been able to accommodate this.

Could this be a rare example of very welcome cooperation between TOCs??

It has already done compatibilty tests with Chilten 165s. The 166 test was obviously an additional test required by the manufacturer.

172102 is due to arrive in a week or two for milage accumulation tests. Apparently it will be fully fitted with seats unlike 172101.

Anyone know if London Midland 172's are being tested or drivier Training this week?

Does anyone know when the first of the 150s will leave London Midland? I've heard EMT have based their May 2011 timetables on receiving the 4x156s from Northern but Northern are themselves having to sublease 2 units at present to provide the usual timetabled service.

Of course FGW could return the 142s that they would have had to return when they got the LO 150s had East Coast not halted plans for the EC 180 services.

I Think Either Rail have gaigned some rather duff info there, or someone in Bombardiers just said June again...

Theres an episode of Futurama - which rather sums up Bombardier in one prase...

Time Keeps On Slippin' Where ironicly, time does keep on slipping! Perhaps Bombardier seems to be watching that episode abit too much...!

They've been out on mileage accumulation with FOC drivers.

No problems, i wasn’t aiming any of it at you - just the usual comment for the ever slipping, ever delirium Bombardier...who, for a train ordered back in summer 2007...Yes, Summer 2007! still haven't finished testing, and still hasn't finished constructing the fleet is pretty dam poor!

As for the the cascades start, and we & northern finally receive our 150s, well, let's just say - First Great Western better start looking for new units, because by the time we & northern will receive any ex LM 150s...they’d be needing replacement at this rate! :roll:

If Rail had simply put 2012 after June, the article would be quite believable.

It is very likely that Chiltern's four units will be ready by May 2011, and then they'll have a year to finish LM's deliveries.

It's a shame Chiltern don't actually need them until September, as their new timetable is delayed. Suppose it might allow them to speed up the GSM(R) fitting programme for their existing units though...

They are needed in May for capacity reasons and will be doing a peak run as a 6 car. Even the September TT (as of last draft) has no 172 timings in it.

It seems several are built but planned driver training is not good enough because they have better brakes than the 150's, what next boys and girls!!!!!:roll:

I did see a Chiltern 172 at tamworth this morning; I was on the 08.40 Euston - Manchester via crewe and just as we went through Tamworth a white and blue 172 was heading south on the high level line.

Presumably that was 172 102, then?

I was on the 0907 (Tamworth Departure) XC service to Nottingham when i saw an Chiltern Class 172 pass while on my way to Duffield!

Had a ride on a 172/0 Gospel Oak to Blackhorse Road. They seem quieter than older DMUs hopefully that is not because they are still new. In the cab it says max speed 100mph btw. But I was struck with how slow the route is. Its like one long TSR !. Perhaps only 15mph !. As the train was full to standing and so slow I wonder why pairs of pacers would not be a better use of resources even though I do hate them.

Gospel Oak is long enough for 4-5 coaches. Blackhorse Road is longer than 3 coaches but maybe not enough for 4 coaches - long enough for 2 pacers though !. No idea about other stations but I seem to recall Upper Holloway is pretty long. Lets hope for Centre cars.

172102 Was out on Friday of last week, 8/4/11 it worked 5Z72 0840 Derby to Marylebone and return 5Z74 1403 Marylebone to Derby. Here are photos of the unit at Small Heath Up goods loop and in platform 1 at Marylebone.
