Wouldn't it have been better if LO 172s had inter connecting corridors like LM units so that IF the Gospel Oak-Barking gets electrified they would be more compatible with LM units...

Well that would be foresight, something not possible for the DfT. It would make sense that all new 5 car and under trains are fitting with corridors

It would also I would think make sense to have built the majority of 172s as 3 car units. However beggars can't be choosers.

In fairness, this might be harder on things like the Voyagers, I have a feeling the nose design for trains doing more than 100 mph has to be different.

Oh yeah, I probably should have said just interregional and suburban stock :)

Its very slightly more areodynamic than it looks at first glance, rather than vertically sloping its horizontally sloping from the centre. Theres no requirement that over a certain speed trains have to slant, it just improves fuel efficency for those that do.

I was under the impression that aerodynamics makes little difference, in open air, to a trains performance until much higher speeds are reached.

Where I believe it does make a difference at slower speeds, is by reducing the strength of a pressure wave upon entering a tunnel. This reduces the effort needed for the train to push through the tunnel.

Trains like these run at 200km/h (125mph) in France. Non aero-dynamic locos, no aerodynamic end carriage.

I'm not really sure what the point is, because we have slab front 125mph locos in this country (although they never get up to it) and slab ended 110mph locos (91 wrong way around).

It is more down to what H&S say you can and can't do rather than the physicality of doing it ie no corridor connections on 125mph stock front and back ends.

Please! Don't ask for new updates. It dissapoints other people who are expecting to see an update when they see a new post in this thread ;)

005 and 006 are the regular ones out at the moment. 004 was around a fair bit but hasn't been seen for a while now. 003 made it to Barking on a test run and died, and 002/007/008 haven't been seen on the GOBLIN yet.

Is the anymore new yet? I here that LM is to start trainig in the New Year and the first could even be a Tyseley by Christmas?

Also that all bar 2 150/1 from LOR have gone to GW now that their 172's are running?

Any idea on Chilterns? Are they still planned to be used into marylebone on locals on as I had heard I think through here that due to a trip cock issue might end up on locals from Birmingham Moor Street to Leamington and from Leamington to Stratford in order to free up other 165 and 168 units?

:D

I seem to recall reading that as they aren't going to be fitted with tripcocks, the intention is to keep them on Marylebone - Gerrards Cross stopping services - obviously they can't operate Aylesbury via Amersham trains (presumably they'll do a trip up the Princes Risborough - Aylesbury branch when they need maintenance).

Don't quote me on this, but today it think, is the next mooving day for the final three...Au Revoir London Overgound, Hello FGW...

Chilterns 172s cannot be fitted with Tripcocks, due to the Eco Flexx bogie design, hence why they will be limeted to Marylebone - Gerrards Cross / High Wycombe stopping services.

All LO 150/1s except 150128 are now FGW units. Only 150120 has actually entered service yet though.

May 2011 was the last I heard for LM.

Chiltern are doing test runs with theirs and they will only end up on Gerrards X locals, you wont see them up that far north...

Well it would appear that the eight class 172s are still bogged down with numerous problems which yesterday led to a total suspension of service due to one failing and then the assisting one doing the exact same thing. line was shut for about 4 hours. Then another failed later in the afternoon.

The reliability of the class is now a major cause for concern, as for the last week at least one has failed every day. I can only imagine the type of conversation between LOROL and Bombardier!

That's not really any different to the 377/5s which had a worse failure rate when they started. They're now running relatively well, touch wood.

Bombardier UK haven't exactly been having a good run- the 377/5s, the 378s and 172s have all had rather more problems than they should have- or has the reporting of the problems just been higher? The 2009 stock for the Victoria line hasn't exacttly been outstanding wither has it? Based on what I've seen, it sounds like they've had systemic Quality* issues- hopefully the production line for the 379 will have taken that on board?

*spelled with a capital Q deliberately.

The 377/5 still have the occasional problem with doors not releasing at St Pancras and City Thameslink (and also power changeover at Farringdon - in fairness this can equally apply to the 319s as well) though thankfully not an everyday issue like when they first entered traffic. Obviously these problems won't affect 172s on the Gospel Oak - Barking line.

The original Electrostars and Turbostars had problems too. I seem to remember a piece on Watchdog about train doors opening outside platforms.

Just teething issues, as others have said they get more reliable as time goes by.

Which can all be summed up with Derby are rubbish at building trains, and you'd be a daft one to place an order with them.

Hopefully they will do what they did with the 377/5, provide support and actually get the product working. Does seem that Bombardier are having problems with their stock in the early days but knuckle down and get the stock up to an acceptable level. Problem is the early part of this curve is really bad and everyone suffers.

With Bombardier going for new Thameslink and one day new Crossrail trains they cannot afford to allow their product to create issues during the introduction. (tho this has already happened).

To be fair to Bombardier the door problems were't so much much all their fault but the track side beacons not working properly. The main cause turned out to be interferrance from the OHLE at St Pancras not getting along with the beacons.
