Class 117/ 305 at Rowley in 1992.

Great memory lane shots! Repainted for GWR 150 celebrations I think.

There was also a Western region 116(?) that carried a bright yellow BT advert around the time this set was repainted.

that 117 spent it's last days in Cornwall, based at Plymouth Laira I think until at least 1995 or even into '97. It is featured in a video I have working the St.Ives branch in summer '94 with one Driving Motor car attached to a 2-car NSE liveried 101 making a most striking hybrid. Perfect for a trip along such a scenic coastal branch!

Class 117/ 305 at Rowley in 1992.

Remember it well, West Midlands used to be my stamping ground a long time ago. Whilst it looked good, those heritage DMUs had in the main become life expired in the early 80s and should have been replaced mainly by EMUs using widespread electrification ISTR. This was only partially delivered and much later than planned due to lack of money! So us commuters had to carry on using rather uncomfortable trains!

Yes it was 55020 which is now the blue Chiltern one.

Perfect for a trip along such a scenic coastal branch!

Yes, it was based at Long Rock Depot in Penzance until withdrawn in the late 1990's. I seem to recall the remaining units were stabled at Exeter New Yard after they were withdrawn. And were possibly removed by road (can anyone confirm?).

The DMUs were all reallocated away from Laira when South Wales and West split from Great Western during the set up of privatisation.

If I recall correctly, one of the vehicles from 117305 caught fire during the time it was based at Long Rock. The result was that the remaining chocolate and cream vehicle was paired up with an NSE liveried vehicle from 117723 (which itself had originated from 117708, after that formation was disbanded). I'll see if I can dig out a photo or two somewhere.

The last remaining 101 in Devon, 101842, was reallocated to Longsight.

On the subject of First Gen DMUs, I bought a new book today - The Allocation History of BR Diesel Multiple Units (Part 1). It has much more than that in it, namely storage & disposal details, refurbishment info, liveries, etc. I studied it on the train home, and although I found quite a few things I'm not convinced about, it's an extremely useful reference book. Part 1 covers 50001-51828.

I can remember my grandad used to take me on a train trip every saturday, Living in Falmouth, St Ives was a monthly trip i think, I remember as a small child probably aged 6 or 7 (I was born March 1988) travelling on a brown train that had doors to every set of seats, and that it was different to all the other trains around here at the time, i assume it to be this 117!
