There's a fish-and-chip shop in Cowes, Isle of Wight, whose wares are supposed to be outstandingly good. They may well be; but -- attempting to use the place (which I'll refrain from "naming and shaming") on a recent visit to the Island, I found its way of functioning so exasperating, that I did not get as far as sampling the food. The premises are small: it's takeaway only; the "system" appears to be, that patrons first queue up to go in one or two at a time and place their orders; they then queue up again outside the shop until said orders are ready. (Maybe this is in itself, not so strange; but service at this place proved to be glacially slow.)
Initially, I "dropped a brick" by going inside before it was my turn. Having then waited outside (lengthily) as was proper; the customer before me, and I, went inside when our turns came. There were two staff in the shop; one lady was very slowly assembling orders for folk waiting outside -- the other bod seemed to be doing nothing whatever. "A minute or three" passed, without anything being done to take the order of the person ahead of me. I'd been getting progressively more irritated; finally I thought, "oh, this is insane" -- and walked out, and went to get something to eat at an establishment whose behaviour was more normal.
