Very glad the Chiltern 165's are getting a refresh, they have to be some of the most knackered units I've seen in the London area bar the LU72ts and 92ts

They’re also by far the shortest units to operate a regular commuter service in and out of London. They’re quite embarrassing.

Maybe it is just luck but all of the 165s that i have ridden on Chiltern recently have been in perfectly acceptable condition. They did not seem particularly knackered. They were a million times better condition than the appalling 1972 Stock and 1992 Stock trains.

Single two coach 171s on their own appear on London Bridge to Uckfield workings fairly often. Especially in the evenings. So it is not just Chiltern running two coach trains on London commuter routes.

Either I'm unlucky or you're just lucky but I have been on a few Chiltern 165's recently that seem to have had a few seat bottoms nicked off them and have had clapped out PIS speakers.

Never seen that on the GWR side of things on the ones based at Reading. No idea what conditions the Bristol and Exeter turbos are in though

What is the refurb going to consist of?

Presumably they aren't planning to bring them up to the same standard as the refurbished 168s...

New floors, seat covers, LED lighting and some work in the toilets.

New above door grab poles where people have bent them by swinging on them, I wonder? A few are like that.

Also some 3rd seats visibly bent downwards.

I've not used a Chiltern 165 in about 15 years, last time I did they were in a decent condition, I'm guessing they haven't seen much TLC in the intervening years?

Clearly not, some of them are in a right state. Clearly it's poor design to have seats in 3+2 that start collapsing if kids jump up and down on them and grab poles that bend if someone does pull-ups on them (the former is a worry I have about cantilever seats long term, particularly 3+2 ones, plus yet another fault of the 777s is that the tip-up seats are already collapsing and no longer sit level, presumably similarly because of kids using them as trampolines) but whether it's poor design or poor implementation it does need fixing.

I saw 165 033 heading north through Derby last week, part of the refurb programme or something else?

The 165s, both Chiltern and GWR, are cycling through Doncaster for other work, not refurb related, I believe it's underframe work?

Is the refresh still planned to happen at some point? I guess they’ve got a lot going on at the moment with the 168 refurb, Mk5s, EWR, etc

Very interested to see how these refreshes come out, if they're even half decent I'd like to know what Northern's excuse is for the (lack of) quality on the 150 refurbs.

Not refresh related but didn't think it needed its own thread. Is there something wrong with 165004? It's only been on the Aylesbury/Princes Risborough shuttles for nearly 3 weeks now, surely it can't be good for it to be stuck doing those lower speed journeys for that long?

It could be likely to encounter an issue, so they wish to keep it nearby / on not too strenuous work?

I'd assume it would get started after they've all finished cycling through Doncaster for underframe work, so that there isn't too many units out at once? There's 14 left to go through Doncaster.

Exactly two weeks, 165025 is the one currently there, swapped over from 165024 last Thursday and will come back next Thursday for another one to go
