I wondered if I can could consider myself to be "home and dry" on this chargeback come the end of November?

I submitted my chargeback claim for the rail ticket concerned to Barclaycard at the end of August and they credited my account with the money while they investigate the matter (of course staying they may have to take the money back at a later date depending) on 31 August 2023 and confirmed this with a letter dated the same date.

I have not had any further contact on this whatsoever from Barclays and come the end of this month (next week) 3 months will have passed since raising the claim and receiving the credit.

Does that mean I can consider myself "home and dry" or could they still recover they money down the line or does there come a point whereby they have to let me keep my refund. How long could this claim drag out for?

I don't want to contact them about this either as I think it might be better to just leave as is while I am not to any financial disadvantage.

Thanks guys.

I don't think there's an actual time-limit on it. But it's possible that the TOC thinks the effort involved isn't worth the expense and are just happy to let it ride.

I'm happy to be corrected on this but I would say your not "home and dry" as you put it until either the retailer acknowledges the matter has now been settled or until the "debt" exceeds the normal 6 year limit, which ever comes first.

I would say I would have thought if the retailer was going to pursue the matter further then you would have heard by now so for all intents and purposes probably safe now

There are strict time limits at each stage of chargeback processes, and I think many players draw these processes out by only responding on the last possible day.

Any idea what these time limits are? I guess I can't work out when I'm in the clear as I've no idea when the bank actually contacted the retailer. If they never have to take the money back from me I guess I might never hear from them again.

I can give an example of a chargeback process when an airline cancelled a flight and didn't respond to a refund request. However, I think Barclaycards are normally Visa. In my case the airline submitted a lengthy document rejecting the refund, in which they claimed I accepted the alternative flight offered (I didn't) and could claim a voucher if I didn't still want to travel (I still wanted to travel but they didn't still have a suitable flight option). They also submitted pages showing all their T&Cs for their flights and fares. I think this was just a tactic they used for all chargebacks to slow them down, as I was asked to respond. It ended with either the airline not responding further or Mastercard rejecting their appeal.

If the fare was over £100 and chargeback doesn't work there's an additional avenue for a credit card. Martin Lewis keeps mentioning it applies even if the value is over £100 but you pay less than £100 on your credit card.

To initiate a chargeback you need to have requested a refund and for it not to have been processed in an acceptable time frame.
Sounds like easyJet. They tried that with me and settled, including interest, the day before a small claims court hearing.

5 months now since I raised the chargeback and they credited the money back to my account. I've heard nothing other then the initial letter saying they have credited the money while they look into it.

No idea if I'm in the clear yet. So tempted to contact the bank but I think it's best left alone.
