I was trying to be clever by suggesting something on the Bluebell railway, but even that won't work as East Grinstead has a direct connection to London.

Are non-NR rail services allowed then? Then stops on the Manchester Metrolink South Manchester Line and Oldham & Rochdale Line?

Denton is one change at Stockport (though going back would require atleast two) and for Salford Central you could make one change at Preston or Wigan

TSR suggested what it'd be like doing an exercise like this from other cities. As an interesting one, I'll suggest Edinburgh and start another thread. Now I don't know Scotland at all so there might be a dead easy answer. As the mods haven't moved this thread, I'll assume it isn't better in the Quiz forum

Sadly not. The first Sunday train to Cardiff Bay starts in Cardiff Central, a few minutes after the first train from Swansea gets there. It's not listed in the National Rail Timetable, but it exists.

A few more which appear to meet the criteria (although they are further away from London than New Clee) are Kirkby, Rainford, Upholland, Orrell and Pemberton. There are Southport-Manchester Airport trains, but ones from this branch don't get any further than Rochdale.

We're talking from London, not Swansea.

It is not possible to get from London to Cardiff Bay, at any point, during the week, including Sunday. There is only one train in one direction only from Cardiff Central to Cardiff Bay. This leaves at 0854, as you've included. The first train from London to Cardiff is 0830, so wouldn't get to Cardiff until.

There is no direct train from the Bay to Central, to connect to a London service.

But the train goes to Cardiff Bay instead of running from it, and, thus there is no connection to/from London - only from the Swansea direction! Or am I missing something?

Agreed! The train from London leaves only 25 minutes before the Cardiff Bay train from Central! Would have to be a SUPER fast London train!

I would guess it depends on the station and whether it is open.

The booking office at New Street wouldn't book me a journey with a 4-5 hour overnight connection in Glasgow early this year, stating they wouldn't want liability should something happen, but there was nothing stopping me booking it myself online.
