carriage keys

Ive noticed on Northern 156's they actually need a proper key to enter the cab.
But not to worry everyone, you dont need carriage keys as for this reason...I was on a packed northern 156 yesterday to Blackpool, didnt realise it but was resting head on the panel for the guards door controls...and it just fell down !
it was probabily a one off, would this have been due to it not being closed properly? because when I eventually closed it (was being a pain and wouldnt close!) it went with a right thud!

...I actually hope i didnt break it.

I've noticed that some units are fitted with more secure-looking locks. Certaintly on the Pendolinos there is a small circular raised section in the middle which would render many of the older bus keys or door bolts useless.

BR1 keys should certainly be withdrawn from the national network - there must be thousands upon thousands of them about and no amount of security will ever fix the leaking of keys that have been in circulation for half a century at least.

That has been a feature for many years - the carriage key is bit more than a square lump
