Seems that nothing's running on the WCML north of Carlisle. Does anyone know what's caused this?

Looks like all of tonight's sleeper services have been cancelled as well. I bet these passengers aren't very happy. When this happens do Scotrail sort out overnight accommodation for displaced passengers, where required?

I believe, according to posts on another (unrelated) thread that a 390 braught the knitting down earlier, losing its pan in the process. I'd been wondering about tonights sleapers

Understand a Pendo is dewired near Gretna:

A train fault near Carlisle has caused problems with the overhead wires near the station. Until the necessary repairs have been made trains will be unable to run between Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh. A limited bus replacement service is running between these stations.
Trains are not expected to run until the start of service tomorrow, Thursday 10th July as the repairs are being carried out overnight.
The 23:40 Glasgow Central - London Euston Caledonian Sleeper service has been cancelled.
Virgin Trains and First TransPennine Express are advising passengers not to travel between Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh due to limited road replacement transport available. Tickets dated for today (9th July) will be accepted for travel tomorrow.
Alternative routes where tickets will be accepted:
First TransPennine Express passengers may use:
East Coast between York and Edinburgh.
CrossCountry between Leeds / York and Edinburgh
Virgin Trains on any reasonable routes
An alternative route map is available here

Virgin Trains passengers may use:
East Coast between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh.
CrossCountry on any reasonable routes
Northern Rail between Newcastle and Carlisle
ScotRail between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh
An alternative route map is available here

Some Virgin services from Crewe were only running as far as Preston this evening due to the problems with I'm guessing replacement Bus services as onward connections

Last nights (Tues/Weds) highland sleeper was 247 (4 hours 7 mins !!! ) late arriving in Edinburgh at 0803 , where it terminated so Fort William ,Inverness and Aberdeen will not have had sleeper service from London for 2 consecutive nights. I heard there was a problem with a carriage, although stand to be corrected. I am not aware of precise reason from Scotrail. No doubt a costly week as far as compensation/ delay repay for someone ...

No initative from the railways again.

How about dragging the sleeper with Diesel locos eitther via the GSW or from Carlisle to Edinburgh / Glasgow via Newcastle?

All sleeper train managers are cleared to take trains via GSW or ECML. Most likely DBS can't provide locos/crews to run over these diversions.

But they go that way when it is planned diversions do they not?

Sleeper passengers can use sleepers at Glasgow,
Aberdeen, Edinburgh or London, till the morning then
travel, change their date or have a refund.

The Northbound Highland sleeper arrived a mere 3 hours
Late this morning. After the 90 went pop.

Anybody with a suspicious mind may think that First are
trying to kill off the sleeper passengers business.

Did they recently lose a contract perhaps.

1M16 and 1S26 were also delayed though by not as much. The delay was attributed to a problem with the traction equipment (i.e. class 90).

Even though 1S25 terminated at Edinburgh, there's no reason why ECS runs could be made for stock to be in position to allow tonight's services to run.

The night before, one of the coaches on 1S25 suffered an ETH failure. It arrived in Edinburgh at 06.36 (160L) and Fort William 12.09 (134L). The Inverness portion (which carried the aforementioned dead coach) was also terminated at Perth continued to Inverness as ECS.

All in all, not a good few days for ScotRail and the CallySleeper

Indeed they do, however, ECML diversions need drivers from Doncaster for part of the run. Wembley men (usually the same crews we have to take us up the wcml to Preston) take it to Doncaster. Doncaster men take it to Newcastle and millerhill crews take it onwards and vice versa (millerhill also do our pre north on wcml).

So I expect for a ECML diversion tonight there was no Donny drivers available.

Also GSW (I've worked for 2 1/2 years on sleeper) I've never been diverted over it. Although our TM's regularly route refresh I expect that not enough 67's were available.

Perhaps Newcastle - Carlisle ought to be a high priority for electrification, should offer a fair bin a bus opportunity as well.

I understand from my sources there is a large amount of damage over an extended length in the Floriston area, including 18 registration arms needing replacement. Taxi transport between Carlisle and Scotland, although coaches were running earlier.

Ouch. Wonder how long that'll take to fix. I'm working to ABD tomorrow night.

I've been made aware that GSW wasn't an option as the damage is from Gretna jct south and nothing has run from GSW to Carlisle since the incident.

Ahh cheers for the clarification.

Several 390s were turned round at Preston this evening, at least one (1941) once loaded and ready to leave. There was a gap of almost two hours in services to Carlisle with cancellations of 1941, 1953 and 2053 resulting in a gap of almost two hours with nothing between the 1915 (at 1929) and the 2041 (at 2116).

I'm still on the 2155 NCL - MIA.
I had booked a seat on the 1840 GLC - LAN and then connection to Manchester. 2h 50m late.

Any idea which 390 brought the wires down and how badly damaged the unit itself is?

Looks like I could be playing russian roulette on the WCML on Friday, though fortunately not on the Sleeper (that would really be a bad omen!)

Very odd, taxi driver asked me which Train Company I worked for!?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
It occurrs to me that the staff at the station thought we were the passengers from the 20:xx TPE from Edinburgh which was canceled. Of course, a few of us were actually from various VT services which were canceled (I obtained an itinerary via Newcastle from Glasgow Central ticket office).

I got caught up in some of this tonight at Oxenholme. At 21:34, 350409 terminated and dumped a boat load of passengers on platform 2. At 21:46, 390049 arrived totally rammed to collect these passengers - wouldn't like to have been on that one! At the time, my ride home on the Crewe service (1M87) looked safe (listed as On Time) but later changed to 40 L. When TPE's Carlisle to Manchester Airport showed up (350405), I was practically strongarmed onto it (I said that I didn't mind waiting an extra 40 minutes, but the VT guys kept insisting that I get on it). I guess they would have throttled me had I said I already had 350405 for my haulage. ;) :)

Virgin have been tweeting that they expect to run a near normal service in the affected area on Thursday... Optimistic?

I guess we'll soon find out!
