Not your everyday delay, this...

It appears a dog was attached by its lead to a coffee shop table at Coulsdon South at about 1015 today. Nothing out of the ordinary, you might think. At about 1020, all trains were brought to a halt in the area because the dog had run onto the tracks and dragged the table (and possibly some other furniture) with it. Lines were closed until 1042 whilst this barking mad situation was dealt with. I am led to believe nobody was injured.

I thought I'd post this for the amusement of members! We're coming to the tail end of the delays now, so it's not too bad.

I wonder which of the 72,000,000 railway byelaws covers this particular situation....:D

Perhaps it was chasing another dog. In days gone by it might have been a Bulldog on the GWR; a Greyhound on the LSWR or a Terrier on the Brighton.

Of course if Network Rail or Southern tried to charge the owner of the dog for the cost of cleaning up the mess, and/or the cost of the delay to train services, then there would no doubt be an outcry.

Presumably there would be a photo of the sweet looking dog in the paper, and a quote from the owner about how he has "..never done anything like this before.."

Securing all but the very smallest of dogs to outdoor furniture is most unwise.
If the dog pulls at the lead, the furniture will probably move, even very slightly initialy. The noise of the furniture dragging or scrapeing is apt to startle the animal which is then liable to make an all out effort to run away from the frightening noise behind it !
The quicker the dog moves, the more noise is produced, and the harder it runs to escape the noise.

I do recall some years ago a cat escaping from its box in the guard's compartment of a XC train (Leamington?) and causing both delay to the train and injury to the guard.

"Brother Rover is yet another victim of the privatised railway system and casualisation of staff. This would never have happened on a nationalised railway platform!"

Said a well known Trade Union Leader yesterday.
