Construction has started on the hotel next to Cambridge North station. This was sent in a
Travel Plan Plus newsletter.

McAleer & Rushe Contracts UK have been appointed by Brookgate for the construction of a new 217 bed Novotel Hotel at Cambridge North Station (CNS). Main contract works will commence on Monday 25 February 2019 with Practical Completion scheduled for September 2020.

The Multi-Utility Trench (MUT) works will be carried out end of March and substantially completed by end of March 2020. The new utilities are being placed for this phase of works but also for future phases. This will have significant impact on pedestrians and cyclists (both to and from the station). When these services extend into this strip adjacent to Cowley Road it will require the full closure of this cycle and footpath until the end of October 2019. This closure will require the diversion of cyclists and pedestrians down the pathway of the guided bus route.

When this area is reopened, the cycle way on the west side of Milton Ave will continue to remain closed as the utility works continue towards the station. Pedestrians will therefore be directed to the east side of Milton Ave as will cyclists who will be requested to dismount and join the pedestrians on the same pathway. Safety consultants wish to separate cyclists from construction activities which is one of the factor for redirecting cyclists to the station via the guided bus route in order to maintain that separation. All cyclists will be encouraged to use this route.

End of March 2019, following activities will take place:
  • Closure of the pedestrian and cycle path parallel to Cowley Road
  • Closure of access gate (“short cut” from Cambridge Business Park onto the pedestrian/cycle route)
  • Diversion of pedestrians and cyclists to guided bus route
  • Routing of buses and coaches to temporary turn-around on the car park approach road and closure of bus route down to station
  • Closure of Milton Ave Link Road
  • Guided bus route - Localised restrictions to roadway around site
Please note these dates may change depending on the progress of works onsite.

There is a consultation on developments in the area with details here:
https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/media/7029/print-a5-nec-southcambs-booklet.pdf

The consultation is running for 6 weeks from Monday 11 February until 5pm on Monday 25 March 2019.

Seven drop in events are proposed in the area. This is your chance to come and talk with one of the planning officers about the plan and how plans can be submitted to the Councils. Below are key dates which would be relevant for employees. For other locations, please see here.
  • 27 February 2019 from 6:30am – 8:30am and 4:00pm – 7:30pm, Cambridge North Station, Cowley Rd, Cambridge, CB4 0WZ

The reality is that the whole area around Cambridge North is going to be a building site for the next few years.

I generally support the development of the area but improving road and public transport access will have to be a top priority otherwise the whole area around Milton Road will grind to a halt even more than it does on a typical day.

The station is going from strength to strength albeit slightly slower than some envisaged. The amount of cars parking has grown substantially since the uplift in GN calls here exactly as predicted by GA management. New housing & other building works will only add to this but as stated, local infrastructure seriously needs getting right.

Of course many people have found that the big advantage of getting on London-bound services at Cambridge North rather than Cambridge (errr... Central) is that you will be sure of getting a seat.

Here's the latest (very long) consultation report on the redevelopment of the area

Bus Closure Deferred at CNS
As a consequence of project resequencing Brookgate have decided to defer the closure of the Link Road at Cambridge North Station (CNS) until the end of January 2020. This means that the temporary bus turnaround will not be formed until immediately after Christmas of this year.

The Link Road will open other than for a period of 4 weeks when they will need to close one of the lanes whilst their contractor (ESM) installs the new HV cables. This is likely to occur during the month of September following which the Link Road will be fully reopened and operational until the end of January 2020 when it will be closed.
