I've just returned from a week in Machynlleth where I used the train a fair bit, both to get there and also to travel around the area. My complaints with the 100% rate of trains with broken AC are documented elsewhere, but a few other things struck me. First was just how busy all the trains were - both on the Aber section and the Pwllheli branch too. My understanding is that the forthcoming 197s actually have fewer seats than the 158's which seems nuts. While trains were only full to standing on the Birmingham to Shrewsbury section it wasn't very far off being so the rest of the route.
I'm also surprised at how poor the frequency is given how busy the trains were - I can understand the Pwllheli section being only two hourly (though the southern end seems quite busy) but it feels like Aberystwyth could generate traffic for an hourly service quite easily. Is an hourly service possible given the constraints of the single line? I know it happens at certain times of day but quite far from being all day.
Lastly I was also struck at how many people used the train to travel from stations on the Pwllheli line to Aberystwyth, despite the often poor connections - I observed quite a few people changing a Machynlleth for a connection that was a good 50 mins away.
