The First Group Sleeper wording (ON BARBIE) was Copperplate Gothic Light, however on my mock up I have used the old NX ScotRail logo which SR uses on its internal literature. Placing the X in the middle, I decided as the main focus of the new SR identity is based on the saltire, and by placing it in the middle it makes prominence, however retaining the existing ScotRail bright blue spots and silver doors. Remember the sleeper stock used to have the old SR logo in the middle?

No doubt ScotRail already have a new livery planned so it will be intereting to see what they come up with.

Personally I cant ever see ScotRail giving the sleeper its own seperate identity/logo as the main focus now is on continuity throughout the rail network in Scotland, including the sleepers.

On the topic of fonts, ScotRail used Sans Book on ALL wording in sleeper leaflets (bar headings) and the Sleeper logo is displayed at the bottom, as below:

picture1wmg.png
^^yeah I don't think it should have its own unique brand, just a sub-brand, still inexcribely linked, and having the image of the Saltire mark and livery etc, but with a little diffrentiation just to say, you know that this is not just your normal train, its something special.

the sleeper stock currenly has the copperplate type-logo in the middle of each carriage with lines radiating out from either side and the First ScotRail logo on one and the First logo on the other, I think.

I wish I had my memory card, as that has pics of some of the material, toiletry bag and food packaging, but yeah I was really surprised how well the onboard leaflets and print material was produced. I mean its obviously during a time of change so, its a bit of patchwork with some First ScotRail bits and some new ScotRail bits, but the new interim ScotRail bits had a real classy appearance, and with clever graphic design touches, like the leaflet made like a bed...
I love that logo!!! Would you be able to sell it to Scotrail?
...if you're referring to my logo, then thanks a lot! tbh I'd totall be honoured, if ScotRail took it on, in fact that's an understatement I'd be over the moon!!! I'd let them have it for free... but It's not likely to happen.

I am very intrigued though to see what they come up with for the sleeper. I dunno if RedPath, the design company would be involved or not, at this stage, but I think we're gonna be up for a wait probs...

Hi Guys!

First of all I'm no rail expert so be gentle with me! :D But I am a graphic designer - anyway I do have fascination with the Caledonian Sleeper, its perhaps not as glamorous as many other sleepers in the world, but having used it during the course of this project (more about that in a bit) I adore it and I'd be hard pressed to find a better service experience on the UK rail network - will deffo be using it again if I have the chance.

Anyway as you guys know ScotRail has recently had an identity change, including the livery, designed by the lovely chaps at RedPath in Edinburgh, which is permanent for the forseeable future. This made me think what would happen to the CalSleeper? In my mind it is the perfect opportunity, to create a sub-brand with real value that would last for a long time, and hopefully secure it's long term future, something that could compete with air travel. As it just happens I was leaving Edinburgh at the end of July to London for a music festival - perfect chance to use the CalSleeper! for the past year I would arrive really late into Waverely and I'd see the Sleeper at platform 11 as I was waiting to be picked up, and used to wonder - and now I had an excuse to experience it,woohoo! and to add to the experience, at this time I also had self initiated, summer submission to do for my degree course, I do at Leeds College of Art, and I looked no further than to use this as my brief. Obviously if this was real I'd been briefed by Transport for Scotland, so I had to think like them to write it.... you can read it on my blog: http://volcanicash.tumblr.com/ .

tumblr_koulq5wtFA1qzr9duo1_400.jpg

Anyway heres the final piece I came up with, I kinda had a rush to finish, as like most art students I'm poor at time management lol, but I'm happy with the result. theres more to come such as how I would apply it to livery, and promotional material - things I didn't get chance to add, before I had to submit, but I did this project not just to satisfy my academic requirements but cos I am genuinly interested in it.

Anyway I'd love to know from people who love trains more than anyone else, what they think, so thats where you guys come in, it'll help to evaluate my outcome. Cheers!:D

This logo makes sense for the Fort William sleeper, as its basically a every night thing of hitting the stags!:P

The new literature looks great, very simple but very stylish, especially the A to Z guide.

^^oh thanks. the only thing is that doesn't have the SLEP carriages, I know I'm being picky here lol, but I just like to be accurate - still useful though, as I'd probs have to draw it out myself anyway (we're encouraged to do it ourselves), so it be good guide perhaps...
I may have some template SLEP coaches.. I'll dig them off my HDD..

lf anyone's interested, the Rolling Stock exterior guidelines are here: http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/files/ScotRailGuidelines_RollingStockExteriors.pdf

and the index with everything else is here: http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk...reement-contents/ScotRail-branding-guidelines

'jamesontheroad' is right to say about the font - according to section 1 of the above, only Officina Sans Bold, Officina Sans Book and Officina Serif Bold should be used.

Slightly off topic, but the PDF Guidelines, does every franchise have them? or is it just Scotrail.

^^I dunno if they'd be so comprehensive, as the ScotRail guides obviously have much bigger impact, and so a lot of people need to know about it. as a general rule for corporate identity as I understand it, guidelines forr corporate identity are given by most design firms in some form, even if it isn't necessarily as comprehensive as the ScotRail ones.

As this redesign was funded by Transport for Scotland a government body, its more readily available - getting hold of identity guidelines for other companies might be more of a problem, as they are private companies, who would most likely want to keep to themselves for whatever reason...

The other point might be that the new Scotrail branding is meant to be long term and whilst the guidelines are comprehensive, they'll be needed a long time and rather than just come up with a spec for the forthcoming 380's, this has been thought about across every detail of the operation, can be used on the repainting of current rolling stock and future orders. I guess it also future proofs changes of franchise too.

Do London underground/overground have such design scheme guidelines?

^^I know they definetely have quite tight rules for typefaces, but I'm not sure if this is more comprehensive and details stuff like colour and how to use logo's, as its quit an old logo. I would assume so though, anyway especially as tfl seems to have been more "graphically homogenised" more lately...

anyway back on topic, I messed about with a picture of a hornby model of the CalSleeper, and heres what I came up with! enjoy!

(it looks better bigger as you can see more detail, particularly the detail that expose what a geek I am lol...)

(even though this is not liveried in real life, and is just in the standard ews livery)

Just a quick question, why did you decide not to put an opposing half-cross on the left hand side of the 67 like you did on the 90, because it looked great on the 90 and I see no reason why it wouldn't on the 67?

^^I decided not to do it like the class 90 because of the structure ofthe locomotive. theres less expansive space to use for the livery cos of two large vents on either side of the class 67. it would be hard to mirror the class 90, as you'd barely be able to see the arrows becuse of the vents, even if you went onto the vents it wouldn't look very clear. true I could put another arrow opposing the current one where it is, but it would look to close togeather...

so instead of forcing it to pre-determined pattern, I decided to work with the characteristics of the locomotive and to give it that "feel", but not completely steam rolling over its own individual characteristics. kinda like a suit I guess, its cut to fit the 67, so it looks better-theres no point having one size fits all...:)

Also note that the ews liveried ones, class 90 just has a straight gold stripe with ews and its tops number, where as the class 67 has a zig-zag with that on...

what would it look like on a 90 if you put the arrows on the very ends, using the shape of the loco?

Hugely impressive! The same goes for the 67 too - it's just a shame disability regulations (of dubious usefulness in this case) force the doors to be a contrasting colour, though even that doesn't look so bad, in all honesty!

^^well I looked at what first did with other sleepers, cos their "dynamic lines" are meant to meet in the middle too, and they just ended them at the door. there is no way of getting around it to form a saltire unless you put it in th middle which just looks odd, and makes placing logo's difficult.

so I just went with that, plus the massive arrow probs would aid the visually impaired find the door lol the way I put it...

I really like it. Not only is it really nice, it fits perfectly with the corporate style and really looks like it's the real thing.

Edit - just seen the liveries as well.

They're also fantastic. Could the dots be used as the contrast pattern for the doors?
