It appears to me that the new franchise is problematic in many ways:

- they refuse to recognise the Local Scottish Routeing Guide Easements despite Scotrail confirming their validity.
- they have removed Advance fares for local seated passengers between Mallaig/Fort William and Glasgow/Edinburgh hugely increasing costs for local passengers using the sleeper train as a normal 'day train'.
- the trains are very unreliable.

Well you cant blame the stock entirely on Serco, but I have to admit maybe there maintenance arrangements could be better? The easements thing is quite frankly a disgrace, no way to carry on and I hope being challenged by someone. Cheers for the heads up on the advances, I just thought I kept missing them. Interesting that an advance isn't available Mallaig Edinburgh, where the first leg would be with Scotrail. Another example of tourists first, locals second!

Actually they still exist but their implementation into the Fares Database is incorrect as they are still routed Scotrail only so journey planners won't sell them. Instead they should be Caledonian Sleeper & Connections (or similar). However, as far as I'm aware, everyone is claiming it's everyone else's responsibility to fix.

That being said it is possible to purchase them still as I and a group of others used some on Friday night. It appears that Trainline powered sites will still sell them (certainly the FGW smartphone app, the Trainline itself and the Virgin Trains West Coast site do).

The only issues is that unless you can get them issued on new style stock from a specific sort of ticket machine they will say Scotrail only on them which could, possibly, cause issues with the guard on the train. Though that does seem highly unlikely.

Highly unlikely Id say given that Scotrail Guards work all North of Edinburgh jobs still. Ta for the advance info, very helpful. I can tell you that all Scotrail TVMs are issuing Sleeper tickets as the new design, so as long as a Scotrail machine (I used the one at Ayr last Sunday) your ticket, advance or otherwise will print correctly.

They were available as I remember looking for them when you were trying to book them for your trip. I've tried to buy one today for travel in September and they don't seem to be available. I'd be grateful if anyone else can get them to show up.

I'm on the case although Transport Scotland have sided with Caledonian Sleeper although I do get the impression that they haven't got a clue!

The Inverness sleeper is double headed 67s tonight but the second one was dead so I wonder if it's in there to assist with any problems south of Edinburgh should the need arise?

So I understand but the reliability issues have been with the 92s, not the 67s and the diesel parts of the operation are run just as Scotrail did so it seems weird to add in a locomotive where none are required.

Perhaps the WHL Advance tickets have been scrapped to fund these extra locos? Sorry I'm being cynical.

I decided to email Caledonian Sleeper about the AP issue just after my last post on this thread and have now heard back(!) from one of their 'Ambassadors' who admited that they didn't know what was going on but would ask the Retail & Pricing Manager to look into it tomorrow and get back to me.

Can't fault the speed of response if nothing else!

67s have had probably more on-train failures in the last few weeks than 92s. I understand the Inverness has to drag insurance around after the furore over the southbound sitting in Slochd all night and getting passed there by the northbound...

This is a direct order from the Scottish government. There are very serious concerns regarding the performance of both Serco with the sleeper and Abellio with Scotrail. With Transport Scotland heavily involved in both franchises they are playing a firm hand with both companies. There is much embarrassment over the sacking of top Abellio execs and the big drop in performance of both after all the publicity about how great these two companies would be.

I assume the Scotrail thing is down mainly to reduced rlack in the DMU Fleat, the failure to have more 158s refurbished for the borders and industrial relations? Or is there more? Certainly the above would have me losing sleap. As to the sleapers, well no real need to go hunting for evidence I dont think? Impressed with the response time to Ainsworths Email, this hasnt been my experience with them but TBF Iv had no cause to contact them of late but its certainly made me rethink my decision not to contact them about the ambient temperature of the seated coach on last Sundays up Glasgow.

I heard back from CS this morning at 8am. Apparently the Retail & Pricing Manager would be keen to sell APs for travel on CS and Scotrail but it is, in fact, Scotrail who don't want to have anything to do with them! The guy I've been exchanging emails with suggested I contact Scotrail and told me they hoped that if enough people lobby Soctrail they'll change their mind.

I must admit I am very impressed with CS's customer service so far.

You can't fault the staff, they are trying really hard to cover up the multitude of failings over the last few months. Saying that, they probably aren't as busy compared to a normal TOC that has to deal with hundreds of services a day opposed to the small number of sleepers and associated passenger numbers. It may give them more time to get a decent answer to a query.

Could a pair of class 43's work the sleeper?
No. The electrical systems in the coaches would need completely redone.

A pair of back-to-back 43s (i.e. the pair effectively acting as a single loco) has rescued the FGW sleeper on occasion, but it's not something that happens regularly.

Well I've emailed Scotrail. I wonder if they'll be able to match CS's speedy replies? First response came an hour after my initial email (on a Sunday evening no less) and the final reply less than twelve hours later at 8am the following morning.

Interesting to see how you do with Scotrail Customer Relations in the new era. I had a right palaver with them a month or so ago. By contrast I find Caledonian Sleeper to be swift and totally personalised in their response to email.

The origins of the case I had with Scotrail wasn't so much the problem, it could just as easily have happened under First, it was the customer relations process itself that was alarming.

Two things worried me: first there doesn't seem to be an automated acknowledgement of the email any more, so you can't be sure you've contacted the right address. This may have been a oneoff failure - did you get an acknowledgment back straight away?

Secondly, it was clear to me that the staff dealing with me were under far more pressure than before. It took the best part of a week for the first reply, which only half answered half of my email (ie it was around 25% adequate) so I had to quite crossly repeat myself together with a threat of Transport Focus. This got more or less the right result, but it does look like they've made some cutbacks in this area. They didn't read my stuff properly and their replies were terse and unapologetic, all signs that they're under some stress for whatever reason.

So why can't CS offer their own Advance fares from Fort William to Glasgow/Edinburgh on the seated sleeper. That would at least be a start.

Might be cheaper to redo the electrical systems on the 43s rather than the carriages, either way it won't happen!

I wonder wat % of passengers use the service by choice as opposed to a necessity? In other words how many people have been driven away by the poor performance in recent times?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Have read on another forum that GBRf will be hiring in a second FL 90 next week, wonder is thr DBS 90 to be returned or are things geting that bad!

There isn't always a massive amount of spare capacity there, as it's only half a coach, so this might be a little ill-advised.

But there was never an issue offering Advance fares under the previous franchise and I doubt numbers have increased substantially since the franchise change.

In any event the train is supposed to be 'reservations compulsory' so it shouldn't be an issue although in practice passengers can walk on and are sold tickets on board if travelling from stations between Fort William and Glasgow/Edinburgh where the train is a normal day train.

I have no doubt that the new company is well intentioned but seems to lack basic railway knowledge.

I noticed lately they were running the sleeper trains with 2 67's pulling it instead of a single 67? what gives?
As mentioned above (or may have been another thread), after the 10-hour Inverness to Inverness via Slochd debacle they have been told to double-head the Inverness portion. It had been presumed that the second 67 was dead in tow, but having been in coach P last night i can say that it actually is running and providing at least some tractive power.

90045 has done what skoda's usually do and expired on the up Glasgow. 92 to the rescue

The green ones will presumably only replace the DB 90 once FL are able to supply the full 4/5x90.
