150227 taking its turn on the service today. Are they having issues in service?

I don’t know the answer to that but it might just be that some of the crews booked on it aren’t trained yet. There are presumably quite a lot of crew changes in the course of the unit diagram and if some of them don’t sign it the options are to cancel those parts of it (and have the unit blocking a platform) or put a 150/153 on. That’s just me ‘thinking aloud’ though, I don’t know the reason for today, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

I took the early evening train out of Manchester today - it was formed of 3 coaches but was packed as far as Crewe. The diagrams for December show that this service will become a 2-coach 175 working from the new timetable. Seems like this will be a mistake if today is anything to go by, unless they're planning to make it a double unit service once more 175s are cascaded from North Wales routes?

The evening Holyhead service has also had a couple of days recently running as a 2-car service, it's normally a double set!

It would help if Avanti ran its xx55 Manchester-Euston via Crewe, which is supposed to happen from next month.
I see the TfW 1631 Manchester-Cardiff terminated at Shrewsbury yesterday.

**Mr Donnington Update (25/11/22)**
A new Class 197/1 (3 car) has arrived at Donnington RFT this morning. Sadly it has no numbers so I can't ID it. I counted x15.5 units at the terminal this morning consisting of 2 and 3 car units.

011 is out today but looks like it is having a mare, 28 late at Llanrwst. Wonder will it stay out?

Edit: it did stay out until the 1620ish off Llandudno and now it looks like we've failed at Tal y Cafn, the guard is doing a good job keeping people informed but it looks like it's going to be a bus or taxis.

Have had a decent sit in the seats while waiting though, I will post a trip report with a review probably on Monday from the PC.

Edit edit: back in service running just over an hour late, as they couldn't get coaches. Wouldn't bet on any later services running though.

I have a query concerning the ecs movements to position the 197 at Llandudno Junction.

Presumably the extra VST 5D10 0349 from Chester D.M.U.D is the 197 going down. [RTT seems to have stopped showing the specific class of train].

Then at the end of the day, the Blaenau unit used to form 1T21, the 2145 from Llandudno back to Chester. Now as there's no equivalent VST ecs movement shown back from Llandudno, does the 197 continue to form the 2145, making it the first passenger-carrying 197 on the main line?

Does anyone know if there will be an increase in 197 diagrams in the near future or will there be no further increase before December TT?

The latest from traincrew I speak to in North Wales is no one seems to know for sure whats happening with them next, supposed to be going on Chester/Lime St but also a Manchester/Llandudno diagram from December, also they won’t be going on Bidston/Wrexham 150s staying on there for now

Ken, you legend you! But I think the 197’s will be on the Bidstons quite soon, they’ve been route cleared, most of Chester depot sign them, the stop car markers for them have been placed on the short platforms and the number of accepted units is steadily rising. Also, we’re going back to 3 trips a day on the dockets so that means either, the times will be changing back to 150 timings or 230’s or 197’s will be used.

Freightliner Class 66511 hauling TFW Class 197014 working 6Q98 (Donnington Rail Freight Terminal-Crewe Basford Hall SSM) departing the terminal at 12:20 today. (28/11/22)

197110 due at Donnington today at some point. It has been reported on the M5 today all three cars and all numbered up. All unnumbered units at Donnington will go to Wolverton for further work to continue.

Just a guess but I wonder if the 197s were going to Wrexham-Bidston so as to compare their performance and economy with 230s. Perhaps the 230s have no future (Vivarail gone into administration) and so the comparison is off. That would then leave 197s to do the longer routes already mentioned and expected ?.

You’re probably right. Most people I’ve talked to today in work think the 150’s are quicker to 40mph so will keep time. (I’m not so sure)

Interestingly enough the TfW unit diagrams that someone got through a Freedom of Information request show a half hourly service on the Bidston line using 2 230s and 2 197s?

Interesting moves today. A pair of 197's on an early morning run from Chester to Crewe and back before the scheduled 9.20 daily run to Llandudno. There are a number of overnight runs along the North Wales coast by ROG as well. It looks like they are ramping up testing to get as many sets ready as they can.
