As far as I know the Cambrian 197s (003 and 022-041) are the ones fitted but they can be used on other routes much the same as 158s are also used elsewhere.

It just feels like it is taking so long for them to start services on the Cambrian - wasnt it supposed to happen by September 2024 - a 2 year delay at least!
2022 originally with the 158 fleet completely gone from TFW by end of 2022.
With an hourly Aberystwyth service all day from 2022 and summer Sundays hourly service between Tywyn and Pwllheli’s from 2023 was the original plan.

Sun 11/10/26 at mid-day at the Machynlleth depot complex:
  • 197039 in fuel tank siding
  • 197029+197030 through old shed
  • 197037 in Coal & Tank Sidings
First time I've seen 4 197s simultaneously at Machynlleth (rather than 3 at Machynlleth and 1 at Pwllheli, or 2 at Machynlleth and 2 at Pwllheli).

197036 was going to go onto the Cambrian today, which would've been the 17th 197 to do so (to my knowledge), but it departed more than 2 hours late and early terminated at Shrewsbury...

5T04 0840 Crewe T.M.D. (E) to Shrewsbury
Departing on 11th October 2026

This service is partially cancelled
This service was cancelled between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth Carr. Sdgs due to an issue with the train crew (TG).

Blimey that's a massive delay. However even the post COVID date where everything was put back it was meant to be before the end of 2024.

Anyone heard about the 10 new sets of 197s that TFW are ordering?
Unfortunately nothing announced publicly. I have heard that 5 are confirmed as they are essentially paid for by fines owed to TFW by CAF.

I say this as a layman passenger on the Cambrian as a sort of advice to TFW - just accept that the 197 rollout on the Cambrian won't happen, deploy them on the lines which are struggling for stock & give the 158s the TLC that they should've already had so they can run for a good few years more. There's nothing wrong with those trains, they're not Pacers or 150s. New aircon & bilingual announcements & they'll be fine.

(And use those years to change the signalling back to join us to the national network again - then the 197s - or any other available diesel trains - can replace the 158s...why did we get a completely different system anyway, it's not like they'd have resignalled the entire UK network if it'd worked)
Well, I think you can expect part of the route to go over to 197’s next week. Huge amounts have been spent to get everything to where it needs to be. They’re not going to abandon it.

As for signalling, keep dreaming. The railway isn’t going spend millions to get rid of the safest system they have, that is already installed and working.

There is a DMU shortage and getting the 197’s operating here and the 158’s operating elsewhere is good for network capacity as a whole.

The fines must have been a lot to pay for 5 entire units :o

I think it will be the end of the week, because more crew training paths have been bought for Mon 12/10/26 to Fri 16/10/26.

If what you're saying is true, what TfW are doing behind the scenes appears to have very little relevance to what they are saying publicly. Nothing has been announced regarding additional 197s, but TfW have (some months ago now) announced publicly that they want the North Wales Coast Line electrified by 2035. If that happens, they will go from a DMU shortage to a massive surplus. What they need is stock which can run under diesel power now but will either be life-expired (and permanently withdrawn from front line service) by 2035 or can be switch to electric operation post-2035. The 197s are neither, so getting more of them would only be further undermining their electrification business case (TfW, if you're reading this, take any fines from CAF in money rather than 197s and procure bi-mode stock instead).

We could be right or wrong so just have to wait and see if anything happens.

Have they said where the funding would come from for this?
EDIT: I ask because it's one thing to say they want it electrified, but if it's not funded then it's not going to happen. Even if it is funded, presumably the UK-wide shortage of diesel stock won't be fixed by 2035 (or anytime soon after that) and another operator will be able to take them!

Interesting. When I looked through RTT yesterday 11/10 (See my post #10,919) there were no through Pwllheli - Birmingham services showing in RTT beyond 11/10, but they are back in for today.

Similarly in RTT for tomorrow 13/10 there are only Pwllheli - Machynlleths. (I’ve tried the TFW and NRES journey planners but they don’t work for me currently.)

Perhaps TFW is working even more hand-to-mouth than we experience each day on its services?

Photo of RTT screen grab showing Pwllheli services only running to Machynlleth on 13/10.

So I heard. Will that be on some of the services between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury, or Cambrian Coast Line services between Machynlleth and Pwllheli, or both? I've heard a few different things, but I'm not clear on it.
Pwllheli line only

197029+197030 have just gone off, leaving just 197037 and 197039 on the Cambrian until hopefully a second attempt at 197036+197035 coming on.

5T96 1840 Machynlleth Carr. Sdgs to Crewe T.M.D. (E)
Departing on 11th October 2026
Ah ha. So 197039 still not risking a stint in service in the rest of Wales !.

It is looking like it will be full introduction and removal of 158s before 197039 ever ventures anywhere like Birmingham !.

Will platforms be raised for level boarding, as there is quite the step seen in the photo at Newtown?

Not that I'm aware of. The only platform raising work I'm aware of on the Cambrian for the 197s is on the Cambrian Coast Line (the hump at Aberdovey was raised recently, and I was told that another station on that line had similar work but I can't remember which one).

I don't think the 197s (unlike the new South East Wales Metro stock) have ever been advertised as offering level-boarding, so I expect there will always be a step up to get into them. That said, your photo does look like rather a high step; how does a 158 look in the same location?

197s have a noticeably higher step than 158s - this is because the 158 has a two stage step, one outside the door and another inside. It also seems higher than other 15x.

The higher step is particularly noticeable on the Conwy Valley, and you very often see people struggling with it on the 195s on Northern.

It's kind of strange they were able to get away with it, to be honest, as it makes accessibility worse than before, even though they are pre level boarding.
