What's going on with C2C this morning? Delays of over an hour with no lights or heating reported on Twitter - a lot of angry people!

That's not good. I'm not an expert by any means on the franchise situation, but I assume that Nat Ex will continue to operate C2C after they hand over NXEA? A lot of people on Twitter are rejoicing that C2C will get a new operator but I didn't think it would...

People are always quick to blame the TOC but an infrastructure problem isn't their fault.

The C2C franchise isn't related to NXEA, so will continue to be operated by National Express. It is due to be re-let in 2013, I think.

Thge end of the NXEA franchise is wholly unrelated to the c2c franchise. Incidentally, c2c got 91% in the Passenger Focus survey for "overall satisfaction"- and I think they're still the most punctual (on ppm) TOC in the country?

Feeder station at West Ham had a gas alarm which then caused a loss of power. Then when overheads came back on there was a problem because of all the trains in that section drawing power so it tripped again. General call went out to lower pans then got power back and could start to move using minimal power.

Tomonthetrain You missed the point, like completely. jonmorris's post was a reply saying how good c2c are according to PPM and passenger satisfaction. He replied saying basically that that isn't hard to achieve when it comes to c2c are really nothing should go wrong as it is that easy to run, so could any company, however bad, do anything to ruin it!

Alternatively, it actually needs bloody good management when every train forms a much higher percentage of the figures...

Well.....yes. But...some of us do remember the BR LTS "misery line" days too...

yes, there's been a lot of investment since then. New trains (not that they are *that* new now - but considering how much use they get, they've been well locked after), new signalling, and so on. And yes, it's a largely self-contained network, too.

What c2c do increasingly well (apart from run trains on time) is the "responsiveness to customers" (or passengers if you prefer) thing - and thinking on their feet when things go wrong. As has been seen in changes to timetables (a new timetable that didn't work was quickly withdrawn 5 or 6 years ago, while the recent signalling changes that allow extra stops at West Ham was tested briefly well in advance of introduction - and seems to be being carefully monitored now). And check their twitter feed - the information provided during the chaos today (and the interaction with passengers) was in a different league entirely to that provided by any other operator I know. And the PPM measure speaks for itself.

and when a single route means that a single breakdown could bring the entire rush hour operation to its knees

British Rail...? Or is everyone's memory suddenly so short?

O L Leigh

I'm not knocking NX here, but asking a simple question on the same basis that I ask the same of other TOCs like FCC. They've done a good job on the GN side, but on the TL they're hated... yet I'd ask the same question; could any company have done better with a franchise that has pretty much had the Thameslink project in operation from day one until its end?

Quote from the FCC yourideas site:

"I don’t think we will be refitting any of the trains we lease as we are coming up to the end of our franchise."

Obviously they don't feel very confident in winning so perhaps someone else could have done better ;)

What a crazy thing to say (FCC, not you).

Even though it might be logical and totally right, it's not very good from a PR point of view.
