Bulk loads by rail inevitably run at capacity loadings. There is no profit in running part loads.

If a train is removed every two hours, it will go by road in separate shipments which will require an HGV every 90 seconds to match the train.

The point I'm making is whilst a 2200t load will be shipped by rail in one go, it's less likely a 2200t load will even be considered for road shipment for reasons of practicality.

Same is true of air vs sea transport - a much larger volume is offered by sea transport, whereas large volume orders won't be airfreighted owing to the impracticality of doing so.

No, not missing the point at all. You're wrongly assuming the demand would remain unchanged so that load would have to go by road, but your ignoring transport costs.

Economics will deal with it - rail wins because it is more economic to shift that volume that way, where the sheer number of road movements wouldn't be economic. Same as air vs sea.

So the customer would end up buying something else from somewhere else.

But it is not uneconomic to ship limestone aggregate by road. Much goes by road even from rail-connected quarries, especially for shorter journeys. And some quarries do not have rail access.

Stone shipped by rail generally has to be transferred to HGVs to reach its final destination. Transhipment adds to costs.

Road hauliers do not pay the full external costs of their operations - the costs of air pollution, road damage, traffic congestion, noise, etc. If the capacity of the rail alternative is restricted, aggregate customers will pay extra for road shipment instead - and wider society in general, and the Peak District National Park in particular, will have to suffer those externalities.

There must be very few destinations that will require loads every 2 hours! There aren't the sidings and unloading facilities to deal with such quantities, and nor are there enough sidings to load so much. That said the combined capacity of all the quarries and the cement works needs a lot more booked paths to cover potential movements as well as shunting of empty wagons and locomotives within the yards and to holding sidings and for servicing.

It's not only paths out of the quarries but paths into those receiving yards, and places in between that also need consideration. If you look at some of the trains that ran in the first of my linked RTT pages you'll see trains starting or finishing an hour or more out of scheduled paths. It's not uncommon for a freight to start an hour late and arrive ahead of time due to no issues along the Hope Valley line. Short notice paths can be and are arranged.

Nowhere near all the booked paths are being taken up because stone and cement isn't needed in exactly the same amounts every day or every week. Orders come in at short notice and empty wagons need moving from Barrow Hill or Toton. However, there are some that run so rarely that you could monitor for a month and might not see one. Like these 5 daily paths, which are only two along the Hope Valley. The 3 at 12.54 are used very rarely. I can't recall ever seeing a train operating in the two 13.26 paths (but their presence seems to prevent the 13.14 stopper from Sheffield stopping at Dore).

More loops mean more stone can be got moving, even if it may be in relatively short hops. There is room for more loops in many places alongside the railway, even after all the land sales since the 1950s.

Where is the traffic or potential traffic to justify this very expensive re-opening? Passengers from Manchester/Stockport to Derby have a choice of 2 existing routes, and as for local services, Buxton-Matlock can barely sustain an hourly daytime bus service (Transpeak). Freight traffic can run via the Hope Valley, and it would be much cheaper to build some additional freight loops on this line for slow freight trains to be passed, than rebuild the Buxton-Matlock line.

It's never good to have an express passenger train bumping up against a heavy freight so you have to separate them. You can do this by building another set of tracks along the existing route - quite expensive, and you don't really serve any new traffic flows. The alternative is to do that by sending the express train down a different route.

I would have though that you would be aware that the Hazel Grove services use a completely different route into Manchester Piccadilly from that via Guide bridge. How on earth is extending an existing service (not adding one) on a completely different route (which is also four track for a long section), contradictory to my observations of trains getting in the way of eachother between Guide Bridge and Ardwick ?

In terms of your two questions, for freight, the new route would enable the railway network to handle flows from the existing quarries more effectively and require fewer paths to be set aside on the Hope Valley.

In terms of someone who purely bycicles for recreation rather than transport, I suppose they might not be unduly concerned about more lorries on the road. They can also drive their bycicles anywhere, so the re-routing of the current cycle way shouldn't inconvenience them too much either.

There are other options that could improve bits and pieces of the local transport system - The Hope Valley scheme will ease flows along there. A bus would help local journeys through Bakewell. But the railway would combine many more of these benefits.

As a sanity check regarding journey times, the Disused Stations website has an extract from a 1922 Bradshaw timetable for the Peak line.

An express took 1h25 from Manchester Central to Derby Midland non-stop, or 1h30 with one stop at Millers Dale. A stopper took up to 2h50, depending on how many stations it skipped. The Midland route from Central via Cheadle Heath to Chinley was a bit longer than today's routes from Piccadilly, but less congested.

There were few direct trains from Buxton to Matlock. The Buxton branch was mainly served by a shuttle from Millers Dale. Buxton to Matlock journey time was 1h on a direct train, 1h5 changing at Millers Dale.

AIUI the Hope Valley Capacity Scheme only provides paths for 3tp2h of freight, the same as today. The additional capacity is for passenger trains.

I think unused freight paths are a bit of a red herring. Freight traffic flows are inevitably variable, because they have to flex to match customer demand. But if there are insufficient paths to meet the peak demand, that flow will be lost to the railway. Each train can carry 2200t of aggregate. If one of the three paths is removed, that can mean up to 80 more heavy lorries needed per 2 hour cycle, or a lorry every 90 seconds on the A6 or A623!

The capacity crunch might come in the 2030s, with NPR wanting a 4th hourly fast service through the Hope Valley, on top of the 3tph provided by the Capacity Scheme, and HS2 wanting paths for 2tph through Chesterfield and the Sheaf Valley, in addition to the services from Nottingham and Derby.

That's very interesting. And of course one could expect modern trains to be better at accelerating and decelarating which should improve such timings.

BIB - it's not that straightforward - there are other variables, size of consignment being one such example.

Rail's advantage is shifting high volume of usually heavy goods medium to long distances. That's what these freights are doing now, whereas with aggregates yes, road is the right option for the final mile and often the 'first' mile to get to the relevant railhead. Road is also the option if it's a short distance and there isn't a rail connection.

But what you were suggesting was a 2200t load currently shipped by rail would transfer over to being shipped by circa 80 lorries in the same time-window - that won't happen. For one thing you'd need to find the 80 lorries to cover that, then you've got the cost of running them out and back - which given the distance rail ships, may not be viable in a day. So the costs start to mount up against road. I also suspect your calculation on the number of lorries needed is under-estimating it - 80 lorries to ship 2200t is about 27 t / vehicle - a 6 axle artic can have a maximum weight of 41 tonnes (load + vehicle), that's running close to the limits. And I very much doubt that the per vehicle cost is 1/80th of the rail cost (which is what you'd need for it to break even against the rail shipment on your numbers, yet on salaries alone you'd be looking at 80 drivers vs 1 or 2.

What would happen is either the load would be shifted over a much longer time-frame - smaller, more frequent consignments, or the customer would look for an alternative source.

But only where they actually make sense and might serve a useful purpose i.e. have a business case. And also, why re-open just because the Victorians built a line somewhere ? 200 years later, surely we should look to build where needed - which is where HS1 made sense and to an extent HS2 does - though I have my doubts with that one because alot of areas it will run through *won't* benefit from it.

If you want to link Manchester with the East Midlands why run it through the Peak District National Park ? The fastest route from Manchester to Leicester would probably be Stoke, Uttoxeter, Burton and Leicester as a quick look on a map will show you - it links more sizeable places and the only bit of new track needed would be a north > west curve at Willington - but you won't like that, because it isn't a Victorian style rebuild that links two dozen hamlets and reinstates a line which has somehow ended up with some mystical status.

The rail network in the 50s and early 60s had large swathes of it which were a drain on resources and lead to a poorer service overall.

You might like to ask yourself why (at least pre-Covid) the rail network was able to handle on its current network the highest passenger usage since the 1950s and record freight levels. And despite the protestations of a few, many of those trains weren't overcrowded with quite a few shifting fresh air around - which isn't a very good use of resource. And creating lines which will just shift fresh air isn't a good idea.

The confusion is that at times you want it to be a freight relief route, at others you want it to be a local branch line with both freight and stopping passenger and then yet others you want it to carry Manchester-bound expresses. It can't be all 3 without a loop

Hixon/Stafford, Weedon/Northampton, Trent Valley/Birmingham and Quarry/Redhill suggest I'm right. Even Sheffield-York via Leeds or Milford shows you can only have 2 of the 3. On the Anglo-Scottish Mainlines, Carlisle-Carstairs has no local passenger service leaving Express and Freight (using a vast amount of loops), and Newcastle-Edinburgh has almost no freight, leaving Express and Locals.

Both could serve many markets, so the trick is to pick which ones go via which route. Both require the local services (because the whole point is about local connectivity), so the freight must go via one route and the expresses by another. You've repeatedly suggested sending both freight and express via Bakewell & Hope Valley.

Isn't the point to get the recreational cyclists onto the trains?

A question that was posed on a different re-opening thread is relevant here: If there had never been a railway built here in the 19th Century, would you be advocating a completely new build line between Buxton and Matlock?

In all fairness car users are not going to leave their cars on the drive and catch the TransPeak bus.

The TransPeak bus does not offer decent connections with trains at either Buxton or Matlock, at Matlock southbound the bus runs at virtually the same times as the train and does not operate via Matlock station.

It goes without saying that there are no through train/bus tickets, although you can use a Wayfarer Rover ticket.

Oh, and don’t stay out too late as the buses stop running at 6pm

Just to give some perspective on the Monsal Trail usage; a recent local press report noted that 2020 had seen a surge in usage from the previous year. The busiest day saw nearly 4,000 users (up from around 3,000 on the busiest day in 2019). Average daily summer usage rose from around 1,000 to around 2,000.

Obviously not all of these were cyclists.

At the risk of stating the obvious, if the line was re-instated, the trail as it is recognised would have to close. Previous trail users generally wouldn't travel to Bakewell for a walk or bike ride along the A6 instead. Neither would they be spending money in Bakewell's cafes and tourist shops. They might well drive to other trails such as the Manifold Way, Tissington, High Peak, Middlewood or Sett Valley but that wouldn't reduce car journeys. The might spend their money in places like Ashbourne, Bollington or Hayfield but that wouldn't help Bakewell.

There is plenty more that I could say about the need to totally reconfigure connecting lines around Buxton, Chinley and Ambergate as well as a sophisticated series of triangular junctions around Millers Dale and Chee Dale, together with re-ordering access to the quarries at Tunstead and Dove Holes that are currently designed to deal with traffic via the north rather than the south but that can be saved for another post.

Isn't the problem with this potential reopening that the substantial capital cost doesn't result in a substantial benefit?

What would it offer?

1. A rail service for local journeys. Is there a significant market? It's not an area I know well, but it doesn't strike me as tapping into big markets. Would people commute from Bakewell into Manchester or Derby? Is there a significant shopping or leisure demand?
2. A longer distance regional role. Beyond Derby-Manchester (a moderate improvement) and access to Buxton (a significant improvement) I'm not sure who benefits. Yes, it gives better access into (parts of) the Peak District but would people switch? I ponder the situation of Betws y Coed where the car/train balance appears to be 99+ to less than 1 !
3. Stone traffic. It could offer a slightly shorter route for some existing traffic; does it actually allow any new flows? From comments above it appears not.

The trackbed of the triangular junction at Great Rocks is largely intact, with the west to north curve still in use for freight.

The sidings layout at Peak Forest and Great Rocks looks quite flexible, with loops to enable runarounds. I do not see why it should be problematic for stone trains to depart south rather than north.

However, to reintroduce passenger services through this area resignalling would be required, and probably some significant changes to the track layout.

I concur that substantial changes to the layout at Buxton would be needed to reintroduce passenger services from the east, especially if through running to Manchester is desired.

All in all, I think it would be much more costly to rebuild this line to the standards required for a mixed traffic railway rather than as a low speed freight only route.

The vast majority of the cost will be in the legal and design work, not to mention modern standards for freight will be equivalent to permit passenger traffic. Any costs you might save are totally negated if you need passive provision for passenger traffic.

But is there really demand to travel from Buxton to Matlock and beyond or vice versa? Evidence suggests not - Matlock looks more to Derby, Buxton to Manchester. Ah, some will say, that's because there isn't the rail link. However back in the 1980s when new TV transmitters were being built one was put up in Buxton - taking its feed from BBC Midlands / Central - the locals were unhappy saying it didn't cover them, and a couple of years later the feed was changed to BBC NW / Granada.

Just because places are in the same county it doesn't automatically mean there is an affinity between them.

I imagine the economics of the tourist trade will match quite closely the lesser seaside resorts of Kent/Sussex: they can get absolutely rammed on a sunny weekend, but actually the service is run for the benefit of the weekday commuters, and they are what provides the money to maintain the line. Express traffic will be more valuable to send via Sheffield for the connectivity, so it's a case of can you unlock any more freight opportunities (probably not, as there is spare capacity on existing routes) and can you get enough weekly passengers doing doing local hops into Manchester and Derby to justify a subsidy (it won't ever cover it's costs, lets be honest). Given the intervention that would be needed at Buxton to actually link the lines in again (lots of freight lines to shift and a new Buxton station to build probably), is it worth the disruption to the Monsal train and Peak district?

Having taken the trouble to google the population of the places along this line I'm becoming even less convinced! Bakewell around 4,000, Rowsley less than 1,000, Buxton 22,000, Matlock 12,000 (and, of course, the latter two already have links to where most residents probably want to go).

Reopening Nantwich to Telford suddenly seems a better idea - and that was a basket case! :D

Faintly surprised to discover that Market Drayton is bigger than Bakewell, and I suspect Audlem is at least as populated as Rowsley.

(This is not a serious suggestion that it should reopen)

That will go over all the ground covered in this thread and in all probability won't come up with anything particularly new. More statistics, costs and ifs and buts. Costs very high. Benefits? Yep. The only beneficiaries will be the consultants who get paid for producing the feasibility study.

Maybe I should go for a career change - looks like money for old rope and there seem to be plenty of somewhat gullible people who think the scheme's viability has miraculously changed since the last such feasibility study was produced, so it should be a fairly easy copy & paste exercise.

It’s fair to say that consultants’ fees for this sort of work is essentially marginal to their business. The early stage pre feasibility study for Aber - Carmarthen was £300k; Motts’ profit on that would have been around 10% at a guess.

Where the consultants make money is design. Similar profit margins on multi-million contracts.

IF the line between Peak Forest & Matlock is ever restored, I very much doubt if it would include a Buxton to Matlock / Derby service. There would just be a limited stop service between Manchester & Derby, probably continuing to some location beyond Derby (e.g. Nottingham or Leicester). Matlock to Ambergate would need to revert to double track, and with loops in the Matlock area, it should be feasible to provide one or two freight paths per hour. Of course how to fit extra freights through Derby is different problem. For passengers, the main advantage would be to reduce the journey times between Manchester and the East Midlands by 20-30 minutes, compared with having to go via Sheffield.

Regarding freight there's an interesting article by Richard Clinnick in Rail Issue 928. WCML jumbo train from Tunstead Quarry on 17th March with 39* wagons carrying 3,600 tonnes of aggregates. It was split at Wembley into 20 for Battersea and 19 to Paddington New Yard. It left Tunstead 18 minutes late and arrived 68 minutes ahead of its pathed time. It was hauled by 70017 with dead loco 66620 behind in reserve.

The drawback with such jumbo trains is their length won't fit in many loops so they have to do most of their journey at night.

More effective use of existing tracks, and further improvements to signalling and longer loops, is likely to be more cost effective, and quicker, for the entire network than resurrecting most of the old lines.

* How long a loop would this train be likely to need?

Actual running is not really relevant here, given that it may have been pathed to follow a train that did not run on the day. However any freight path in the timetable would not be able to take such an advantage.

The weight is a bigger factor in this than the length. A heavy train takes forever to get up to speed, and longer to slow down safely. It will also have much longer running times uphill, something the Peak Line isn't exactly going to help with.

At a very rough guess - and using VERY rough numbers. JNA wagons are 14m long, and have a maximum total weight of 100t over 4 axles. So for 3,600t you'd need 36 wagons at 504m. Plus 20m for each loco (in this case 2x) so total train length in the region of 544m. I may be very, very wrong on which wagons the jumbo uses or how I've worked that length out so approach with caution, but it's still much shorter than an intermodal freight (775m max).

Stone trains from Peak district quarries currently run uphill from those same quarries.

Any future use of a restored line to Matlock would see loaded trains running downhill and only empty trains returning uphill. This on a line with a maximum 1 in 90 gradient.

Current peak district trains don't run anywhere near 3,600 tonnes. They're in the 2,000-2,600 tonne range (I think).

1 in 90 is still a significant gradient for a freight train. And heavy train running downhill take a lot longer to stop. 3,600tonnes at 1 in 90 is going to have a fair bit of momentum behind it, so the driver will need to brake earlier and on a much shallower curve to bring it to a stand safely. Which makes regulating those trains just as difficult. Trying to find a non-stop path on the MML either side of Ambergate for such a long train will not be easy (otherwise they'd be running already!)

Braking performance surely has little to do with the number of wagons in the train. Each wagon has its own brakes, which provide the same deceleration rate regardless of how many other wagons it is hooked up to.

There is a delay in braking application along the length of the train - hence why american trains have locos in the middle - due to the nature of air-pressure operated brakes. More wagons = longer train = having to brake earlier to make sure the back wagons stop themselves.

Indeed, but the time for the brake pipe pressure change to propagate along the length of the train is only a matter of seconds. It does not "take a lot longer to stop" as you suggested. American trains are far longer than we are discussing here.

This is not to belittle the skill and route knowledge that drivers of long, heavy trains need, to judge braking points and apply the brakes smoothly and progressively.
