I guess pay by phone only is easier to setup for an occasional park and ride service, compared to equipping ticket machines.

Informal park and ride by bus where you park for free on residential streets near a good bus route is rarely done, unlike the equivalent for railway stations, meaning that residents parking zones end up being implemented. You would have thought that would be pretty logical in somewhere like Brighton with expensive city centre parking and half decent bus services. You would have to do research beforehand, such as looking at Google Street View for good streets to park on near bus routes.

Brighton & Hove has announced it is taking over Stagecoach service 54 between Eastbourne and Uckfield which they have de-registered.

Allegedly being run from Newhaven and Eastbourne.

It will be interesting as the 3 Geminis were meant to be going to Metrobus

I thought so too but watching the buses on the App whilst waiting for buses when route still double decker they avoided that bridge and went from Raglan Road via Batts Hill, Danes Hill, Linkfield Lane and back along A25 to Croydon Road, then via Rushworth Road to Reigate Station stop to resume normal route. Deliberately avoiding the Railway Bridge but going along Raglan Road and it's trees.

I guess in reality it's probably a bit of both, although Bridge is 14'9" and bus 14' 5" so technically ok.
The bridge clearance appears to have miraculously shrunk from 14'9" to 14'6" which probably explains it.

New signage now in place.

422 434 and 433 are not going to Metrobus (I think) as some or most of you might know because of route 54, but now there's a gap between 6912 and 6914 and 6926/7 to 6931

Also apparently some Geminis are being converted open top for ESS?

Also just recently joined the Brighton Buses past and present Facebook group :)

439 is now 555 in the green spirit of Sussex livery and there are quite a few pictures of the bus currently (outside of the official site)
Here are some web ones:

550 and 551 might be getting refurbished to the green livery too apparently.

(Edit 15/8 oh well I guess don't know how the renumbering system works)

The suggestion was the balance of Geminis would be converted but that was pre-PVR increase.

I think it's going to happen, the person who said about the conversion is an electrical engineer at Brighton & Hove buses and the post was a day ago.

This sounds a bit weird but why does 6921 have a white livery? Is it going to be in a special wrap or some sort?
(Also quite a few 9XX on 5/5A/5B recently)

There are seemingly at least 3-4 duties SX that require a streetdeck on. Both for schools and increased PVR, will be replaced by the 4 electric vehicles next year.

There are 6 new enviro200mmcs that are going on the 4/5 and I believe 6009 to 6013 are going to get single door converted with 6010 and 6013 already on the job for the 23 to replace the SN12 enviros. Also 6988 is getting repainted to metrobus livery.(In the background)

7 of the Metrobus Scania have gone to Plymouth Citybus, presumably for the college work they have gained.

Now showing on the B&H website

Coming Soon: A new cross-city express bus route

Our new express bus route, the 3X, will launch on Sunday 28th September and will operate between Hangleton and Falmer, offering residents faster connections between Hangleton, Hove Polyclinic, Hove Station, Brighton Station, Lewes Road, the Amex Stadium and Falmer. The route has been introduced in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council as part of their BSIP (Bus Service Improvement Plan).

Brighton & Hove and Metrobus are making a bunch of changes at the end of this month which have now been published on their website.

Looking at it the main most significant changes that are being made seem to be:

• 3X - Brand new express route. It is basically an express of the 5/5A/5B from Hangleton to Brighton and then an express of the 25 from Brighton to the Falmer university campuses.

• 5B - Extra peak hour journeys being introduced and extra journeys to replace the 55 service.

• 20 - Slightly modified route serving new housing developments around Pease Pottage in the Crawley area.

• 23 - Being extended from Falmer to Woodingdean along the old 84 route that got withdrawn with covid. An odd circuitous routing but i doubt anyone will do the full end to end route.

• 25 - Will no longer serve Brighton University Falmer campus. The routing around Sussex University Falmer campus is being changed. All journeys all day long will now serve Northfield Crescent and all journeys will do a double run along North South Road but no longer serve Brighton University Falmer campus.

• 25X - This route is being brought back but very different to before. It is now even more express and skipping double the amount of stops it skipped before. It is also serving far less of the Sussex University Falmer campus grounds than before and skipping out Brighton University Moulsecoomb campus entirely.

• 54 - This is the ex Stagecoach route from Eastbourne to Uckfield that is being taken over. Similar timetable to present.

• 55 - Infrequent route that is being withdrawn. It basically duplicated the 5B with a minor route variation so not a big loss.

• 100 - The route through the Horley area is being modified to serve extra roads.

• 284 - Slightly increased service with a few extra journeys being added.

• 400 - The frequency is bring increased from hourly to every thirty minutes.

• 422 - Being withdrawn and replaced by rerouting of the 100 and 424 services.

• 424 - Extended to Park 25 in Redhill and a modified route in the Horley area.

• N25 - Will no longer serve the Hollingbury Asda roundabout and is being cut back to Varley Halls on that part of the route. That will probably save a couple minutes journey time.

A few other changes as well and the full details are now published on both websites:

These changes look like an utter mess. This will no doubt confuse everyone. The university services used to be so simple with everything following the same route and they are gradually making it more and more complex.

So there will now be five separate routings around the Falmer university campus grounds:

3X 5B 23 - Serves the Falmer Station stops on the main road and then serves the Brighton University Falmer campus grounds. Does not serve the Sussex University Falmer grounds.

25 - Goes on a big loop around the entire Sussex University Falmer grounds from North South Road to Northfield Crescent and then back to North South Road and down a newly served road to Falmer Village then Falmer Station and back to Brighton again. Does not serve Brighton University Falmer grounds.

25X - Only serves the far South part of the Sussex University Falmer campus by the Sports Centre and Medical Centre and then goes to Falmer Village and then serves the Brighton University Falmer grounds then Falmer Station and back to Brighton again. Only serves a small part of the Sussex University Falmer grounds and also skips out three stops within the campus grounds.

N25 - Goes on a big loop around the entire Sussex University Falmer grounds from North South Road to Northfield Crescent and then down Science Park Road to Falmer Village and then serves the Brighton University Falmer grounds then Falmer Station and back to Brighton again. This will be the only service left to properly serve both entire campus grounds.

28 29 29A 29B 29X - Stops on the main road outside the campus grounds.

Also the Lewes Road corridor will now have a ridiculous six different stopping patterns along the same exact route and road with different express services stopping and not stopping at different places:

5B 23 24 25 48 49 78 N25 - Stops at every bus stop and does not have any express sections.

3X - Non stop from the City Centre (Cheapside or North Laine) to Lewes Road Bus Garage then stops at Lewes Road Bus Garage - Coombe Road - Mithras House - Brighton University - Moulsecoomb Way - Coldean Lane - Falmer Station then all stops to Brighton University Falmer campus. Skips out the St Peters Church - The Level - Elm Grove - St Pauls Street - Melbourne Street - Sainsburys - Bates Estate - Ringmer Road - Wild Park - Brighton Academy bus stops.

25X - Non stop from the City Centre (Saint Peters Church) to Elm Grove then stops at Elm Grove - Melbourne Street - Lewes Road Bus Garage - Coombe Road then non stop on a massive section to Sussex House (NB) or Falmer Station (SB) at the Falmer university campuses. Skips out the The Level - St Pauls Street - Sainsburys - Mithras House - Brighton University Moulsecoomb - Bates Estate - Moulsecoomb Way - Ringmer Road - Wild Park - Coldean Lane - Brighton Academy - Stanmer Park - Sports Centre - Medical School Research - Science Park Road bus stops.

28 29B - Non stop from the City Centre (Saint Peters Church) to Elm Grove then stops at Elm Grove - Lewes Road Bus Garage - Brighton University Moulsecoomb - Moulsecoomb Way - Coldean Lane - Brighton Acadamy - Falmer Station then all stops to Lewes and onwards. Skips out the St Pauls Street - Melbourne Street - Sainsburys - Coombe Road - Mithras House - Bates Estate - Ringmer Road - Wild Park bus stops.

29 29A - Non stop from the City Centre (Saint Peters Church) to Elm Grove then stops at Elm Grove - Lewes Road Bus Garage - Brighton University Moulsecoomb - Moulsecoomb Way - Coldean Lane - Falmer Station then all stops to Lewes and onwards. Skips out the St Pauls Street - Melbourne Street - Sainsburys - Coombe Road - Mithras House - Bates Estate - Ringmer Road - Wild Park - Brighton Academy bus stops.

29X - Non stop from the City Centre (Saint Peters Church) to Elm Grove then stops at Elm Grove - Lewes Road Bus Garage - Brighton University Moulsecoomb - Moulsecoomb Way - Coldean Lane - Falmer Station then non stop to Lewes and all stops onwards. Skips out the St Pauls Street - Melbourne Street - Sainsburys - Coombe Road - Mithras House - Bates Estate - Ringmer Road - Wild Park - Brighton Academy - Falmer Village bus stops.

What an utter mess. How are passengers along a simple corridor meant to remember six different stopping patterns. It will just create so much confusion on which buses are stopping where. Why can they not make all the express routes stop at the same exact stops. They have done this in the most confusing way possible by having dozens of express routes with all different stopping patterns to each other along the same road.

Another thing i do not understand is this weird new 23 routing. Surely it would have made much more sense to split it and keep the 23 as it is (Falmer to Marina via Lewes Road) and just reintroduce the 84 (Falmer to Woodingdean via Falmer Road) as a proper half hourly service. Nobody would use such a circuitous and long route so surely splitting it in two would have worked better.

It will be interesting to see these changes in action but i can not see them being particularly successful. They have just created a confusing mess of routes. But we shall see how it works out.

You make some very valid points. I think they have tried to segment the market to speed things up, and I would expect the university students to pick it up quickly through journey planners etc, but it is vastly more difficult to understand.

I have a sneaking suspicion that by Christmas the 25X will stop along Lewes road at the same stops as the 3X simply to reduce that confusion.

Don't forget approx 1/3rd of all students will be new in September, therefore have no history of previous bus routes to the campuses.

Very true. I also think there is a clear rebalancing of demand on the Student routes, there are a lot of students across the city, rather than just Lewes road/campus now.

(If the 3X is successful, I could for instance see the 25X being withdrawn in 12 months)

Near a bunch of sheds that aren't 66s.
A lot of interesting route changes on the across the city but I have to echo the sentiment above about the very confusing stopping patterns on the Lewes Road corridor. Up until now all the express routes had the same stops which made it consistent and easy enough to understand (bar the 29s skipping BACA, which isn't a heavily used stop outside of school times anyways).

I am trying to understand the rationale behind three things:
1) why the 25X is being brought back when the new 3X virtually almost does the same route albeit apparently with different stops. The only difference the 25X offers is that it goes to the Old Steine but given the 3X serves the North Laine and Brighton Station which is advantageous in its own right, is this really necessary?

2) why there is a mismatch of bus stops served on the Lewes Road and where buses go within Falmer. What I mean by this is the 25X skips Sussex University to go to Brighton University in Falmer, only to then skip the same university's campus in Moulsecoomb? I could understand the route skipped Brighton Uni Falmer and was only serving the Sussex campus in order to filter out Brighton/Sussex students like the old 25X used to do. Ideally any bus that serves Brighton Falmer campus would also be stopping at Brighton Moulsecoomb campus (the Moulsecoomb station, Mithras House and Coombe Road stops).

3) why the huge variation, which will be confusing as pointed out above, of where each express route stops on the Lewes Road. I understand each route is targeted at a specific audience and so it is assumed for the most part that different target groups require particular areas on the Lewes Road but for people just using a turn up and go service on the Lewes Road this will no doubt be very confusing and probably short lived I imagine.

On a separate but related tangent, I can't imagine that Sussex students/staff/other stakeholders will be thrilled that in such a short span of a couple of years virtually all their services have been hemmed down from several routes (such as the 23, 5B, 25X and the 50U) into just one, 24 hour 25/N25, all stops service down the Lewes Road into the Old Steine.

Do we know, if student numbers from Sussex Uni has dramatically dropped, because that is could be the logical reasoning behind it?

There is indeed a massive reduction in service frequency to what the campus grounds used to get.

Brighton University Falmer campus grounds will now get:

3X - 4bph (every 15 minutes)
5B - 2bph (every 30 minutes)
23 - 2bph (every 30 minutes)
25X - 2bph (every 30 minutes)

Sussex University Falmer campus grounds will now get:

25 - 7or8bph (every 8 minutes)

This is a huge reduction for both campus grounds compared to what they got ten years ago.

So both campuses will have a similar frequency as each other but just completely different services.

But this also means that people travelling between Brighton University Falmer and smaller stops along the Lewes Road corridor (many of which serve student housing which is now spread all along the road) will now get just one bus every thirty minutes. They used to get at least one bus every three to five minutes. This is a huge reduction.

If we go back quite a few years the entire Sussex University Falmer and Brighton University Falmer campuses used to get all this:

5B - 2bph (every 30 minutes)
23 - 2bph (every 30 minutes)
25 - 12bph (every 5 minutes)
25X - 6bph (every 10 minutes)
50U - 2bph (every 30 minutes)

That is 24bph (every 2or3 minutes) around the entire campus grounds of both Sussex University Falmer and Brighton University Falmer campuses.

So we have gone from 24bph to 7or8bph on the Sussex University Falmer grounds and from 24bph to 10bph on the Brighton University Falmer campus grounds.

They seem to be gradually reducing services over recent years. Originally the 5B/23/25X/50U went around the entire campus grounds of both universities but then gradually these routes were cut back to skip out parts of the Sussex University Falmer grounds. Now the Sussex University Falmer grounds are left with just one route.

Hasn't taken long, there's a Coaster 400 on their tonight.
Oh yes, it's on there this morning too. They should swap the Coaster one with the errant BH4-branded Gemini that's been operating on the Coaster route for the last few weeks  It will be interesting to see if they get more 400s for the Regency route, I still see a lot of the BH5-branded 400s running on it, plus now they have the new 54 route as well.

Surprising to see that the 54 is being run entirely from Newhaven depot. All three vehicles seem to be based there. It looks like they are not even using the Eastbourne outstation of Newhaven depot but instead sending the three buses to and from Newhaven depot every day. I would have thought it would be based out of Brighton Lewes Road depot like the 28 and 29 are. Brighton Lewes Road depot includes the Uckfield outstation which would surely be the most convenient place to base them out of. It would also keep all the Regency branded routes and buses at one depot and the morning and evening working could probably interwork.

Yes indeed. This obviously goes into the "There's something I don't know" category but looking at the timetable I can see that on weekdays 2 duties finishing at Eastbourne and 1 at Uckfield, whilst all 3 duties start at Eastbourne (the first two journeys from Eastbourne are 35 minutes apart at 05:40 and 06:15 whilst for the rest of the day there's at least an hour's gap. It *looks* as though those two early journeys *could* be combined into one journey and so one of the duties could start at Uckfield and therefore one bus *could* be stabled overnight there whilst the others *could* be based at Eastbourne - I think Lewes Road is too far off-route with too much out-of-service running and too inconvenient for driver change-overs to be financially viable.

No official source and hearsay but there was a suggestion that Stagecoach weren't happy with Eastbourne and there is no space at Lewes Road or it's outstables because of increased PVR due to Conway Street rebuild.
