Not mentioned so far in this discussion, nor mentioned in the otherwise useful links upthread, is the drive in the country enjoyed by the fated couple. The scenery is quite rugged and at one point they go over a small hump-backed stone bridge. It has the look of the Yorkshire Dales which are not all that far from Carnforth.

The film locations are a real jumble - the boating lake is Hyde Park.

That's recently been confirmed as the old Middle Fell Bridge in the Langdale valley (near Dungeon Ghyll) in the Lake District. About 35 miles or so from Carnforth. Definitely not anywhere near Kent.

A number of sources claim that some of the scenes supposedly filmed at 'Milford Junction' station (i.e. Carnforth station) in February 1945 were actually filmed at Denham Film Studios in Buckinghamshire. Not just those scenes inside the refreshment room, but also the one(s) where steps can be seen, down to the platform(s) (Carnforth doesn't/didn't have any steps, just slopes).

It seems that although most of the railway scenes were done at Carnforth, one or two run-throughs not requiring actors were done at Watford Junction. There was a set built at Denham Studios to match the buffet at Carnforth, but most of the station scenes were filmed at Carnforth. Street scenes were done in Beaconsfield town centre and on a surprisingly elaborate set at Denham. Other locations were Regents Park Lake and Ambleside.

That's likely to have been "Close Encounters (of the Third Kind)" which I don't think was ever filmed in Carnforth. Or set in Kent.
