I don't do algebra, but yes, you could for example break a York to Leeds journey at Church Fenton and walk/cycle to Micklefield, and resume from there.

For completeness, the ticket needs to permit break of journey, no? My reading is that by the strict terms of a ticket you can't have an advance from West Hampstead to Pitlochry (say) and decide instead that you'll fly from Luton to Edinburgh as part of it. Although just to contradict that agin for fun industry guidelines are that since you wouldn't be doing this to gain an advantage you should be permitted to anyway!

(Plus of course no one sensible would buy such a ticket)

Yes, assuming no break of journey restrictions on a flexible ticket

And also assuming A-B-C-D-E is one Permitted Route. You can't switch between Permitted Routes, your entire journey has to be on one of them even if you miss bits out.

So for instance you couldn't go Manchester-Milton Keynes, take a taxi to Bicester and then continue to London on Chiltern as things stand (notwithstanding that if they ever get East West Rail going that may then become a Permitted Route). But you could, if you wanted, go Manchester-Banbury, take a taxi to Bicester then continue, say.
