Plans to ban the drinking of alcohol on London's transport system have been unveiled by new mayor Boris Johnson.

He joined London's transport commissioner Peter Hendy to set out a timeline for bringing in the measure.

The ban on the Tube, trains, buses and Docklands Light Railway was one of Mr Johnson's election pledges.

It is also part of a wider strategy to tackle anti-social behaviour. New posters were also unveiled advising passengers of the no-alcohol policy.

I agree. Was on a tube train recently with a group of drunken people, and still drinking, who disturbed a university girl working. I was disgusted!

I would suggest that they need to clarify what they mean by banning alchohol on trains. The London Overground only I assume.

Strangely enough, in germany you see people drinking bottles of beer in the street, on the bus, on the underground and there's never any trouble. Boris has got his priorities wrong.

In anycase, most of the drunken people who cause trouble on public transport were drunk before they got on.

The press release on the GLA website says it will be on tube, tram, DLR and bus only. It is the BBC article above that has added the word "trains."

It's all part of a strategy to reduce crime & anti-social behaviour on transport, which seems to be an ongoing problem in parts of the country. Anything that helps will be welcomed, provided the people are there to enforce it (I'm not holding out much hope for the BTP or the Met though).

As with the main railway byelaws, it is only prohibitied to have any intoxicating liquor when "reasonable notice" has been given. People may have seen such notices when football matches have been scheduled. It would be possible to 'ban' alcohol under this byelaw, but the signage required on a permanent basis would probably be excessive. The policy will be implimented through an amendment to the Conditions of Carriage and the "Rules for Using Tickets" (DLR only).

The first subsection of section 4; "No person in a state of intoxication shall enter or remain on the railway;" is also very subjective and would be hard to enforce in this case. A friend of mine has interpreted this as "If you are p***ed, and you p*** us off, then p*** off."

NET in Nottingham have VERY strict rules on what you can bring. Obviously you have the usual like No smoking, but you cannot take food, drink (inc. alcohol), dogs (unless guide dogs or in cage) and bicycles unless they fold. I even got told off on Saturday morning just for my quick hop from the Royal Centre to the station for drinking my mocha I'd just bought from Caffe Nero! There were about 4 people on there and I thought everyone liked the smell of coffee (if you could smell it!)

Boris is London and what London needs. I think hes vibrant enough for the job and I agree when he says that anti-social behaviour should be classed as crime. Ban The Booze!

Travellers face a ban on drinking alcohol on trains, buses and trams across the country, it was revealed last night.

The drastic plan to cut loutish behaviour will be considered as part of a Government review aimed at making public transport safer.

It comes less than a week after Boris Johnson swept to victory in the London mayoral contest on the same policy - leading to claims that a desperate Labour Party is stealing Tory clothes. }

Announcing the review yesterday, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "I understand people's concerns about anti-social behaviour on public transport. We want to stamp out antisocial behaviour on our buses, trains and trams.

"If more powers are needed to protect staff and the travelling public, we will provide them."

Critics warn that it could fail to curb violence as troublemakers have usually been bingeing in pubs and clubs. It would also stop law-abiding travellers enjoying a glass of wine with a meal on an inter-city journey.

It could even raise the farcical prospect of passengers on Eurostar trains being made to drink up before entering England. Opponents point to the differences between a long cross-country trip and a short Tube ride in London.

Not sure I agree with bans where there are buffet and restaurant car attendants, that's OTT.

I'm not sure I believe the Daily Mail for some reason. I presume there will be exceptions. There is a world of difference between an intercity NEEC train with trolley assistants and buffer staff, and a Sprinter filled with drunks with only one guard who's busy resting his feet.
