Just that (in the UK) 'Public Domain' generally but not exclusively applies to copyrighted work upon which the copyright has expired or was so old it was never copyrighted in the first place.

What I think you mean by 'Public Domain' was that he 'uploaded it to the internet and thus lost practical control of it going forward'. In reality, this is true, even though the law would say that actually that work is copyrighted it - he created it, he owns it (still) and owns the copyright on it, hence not Public Domain.

Source: Mother is a copyright lawyer...I have been lectured on this matter at least once.

The attached letter from Network Rail was received by someone living close to the line today, it came through the door with the junk mail.

Note the date on the letter and the dates for the first two lots of work.

The work involved is for track renewal, not electrification. The track between the station and just past Beaumont Road was renewed when the bend was eased about two years ago. The new rails are already lying inside the track on the down line at Dean Clough, see photo A680b.

I'd guess it includes the stretch of life-expired stuff on the up line just before the speed drops to 75 approaching Bolton.

What's puzzling me (and my colleagues) is what on earth that is left to do that needs a 9-day blockade?

The Phase 4 is fed from Euxton and Ordsall, both of which are already there...

There is a neutral section at Euxton Jct so no issue there one would think. There is nothing to link up to at Lostock so no problem there. So there is through Salford Central to the existing and at Ordsall. But I guess you are correct 9 days seems a lot.

I'm not sure precisely what the content of the blockade is, however, bear in mind Section Proving can be a long process (effectively energising different bits of the route and operating lineside switches to ensure that each switch does what it's supposed to and there's no jumpers in the wrong place).

This is very much a Could Be and not a Definitely Is though, so if someone else knows when that is happening feel free to correct me!

No harm running electric just don’t change the timetable yet - until next May.

Nope section proving is merely an essential part of proving the system fit for use. The ORR still has to approve all the paperwork before passengervtrains can use the new infrastructure and that takes as long as it takes as apparently there is only 1 person in the ORR qualified to make that descision on electrification schemes

Is the track replacement, between Lostock Station and Bolton station according to the header on the letter, being delayed until September/October in order to get the wiring in that area completed first.
