The rules for the length of the over-run are a bit excessive, anyway, but the long over-run towards Westhoughton is only to get the end of the wire onto a straight-ish bit of track ,so that the Phase 7 neutral section can be built there (later).

Being somewhat familiar with the route your explanation makes perfect sense, thank you. I am going to extrapolate and suggest that the "excessive" over-run rules would also explain why it would appear a decent length of the Blackburn line is receiving attention at Bolton station.

I'd always assumed, based on no experience or evidence, that if a crew was doing a piling session and they knew they only had time to get one partly in before having to hand possession back it would be better to do that and return later to finish off, rather than waste that bit of time.

This doesn't contradict your suggestion.

Alternatively, could be as simple as piling until something crops up that means a given pile will take more time than normal, then moving on with a view to getting as many piles complete as possible so the next team can come in ASAP to get started whilst the piling team go back and finish off the troublesome ones...

The WCML didn't wire any of its overrun connections around Earlestown/Newton le Willows, nor the Liverpool line at Springs Branch (nor the Bolton line at Euxton).
There is a short length of 1974 wiring towards Blackpool at Fylde Jn.
I suppose it depends on the neutral section strategy.
If you overran the east end of the platforms at Manchester Victoria you would be in trouble too.

A RTT check reveals most engineering paths this weekend are for the Blackpool line terminating at Kirkham during the early hours, it also looks like a measurement train is scheduled to go along the routes to be electrified as it ends up at Network Rail Derby RTC from Crewe once complete, could be something completely different though

Apologies if this has been covered earlier, I only manage to dive into this thread every few days or so. In a rare daylight trip to Blackpool I counted the following;

Down Main between Preston and Salwick. Specifically between Preston Sports Centre and Lea. There were 13 piles in the ground, and on the Up line 26.

There were also several piles dropped in both cess between Preese Hall f/p crossing and Singleton.

Further, adjacent to the Up Fast at Euxton Jn are two piles in amongst existing stanchions. I'm assuming these are to facilitate the starting of the catenary for the Up Bolton line as it was just before the junction.

Map 5 to me explains it well - I agree with you - looks like Phase 4. The Chord itself while linking Northern Hub is a separate project. Ordsall Lane Jct to Windsor Bridge Sth Jct looks like phase 4 add-on

I will be sending pics to Dave. Did a run from Fylde Jct to Lea Rd bridge which is just before Salwick. I could see no piles or scrapes Fylde Jct onwards but a worksite is set up.

I could not see anything at Lea Lane but loads of stuff at Darkinson-Sidgreaves

There must be a worksite along the line towards Horwich from Blackrod as there warning signs on the track and flashing yellow markers on the rails, the road rail equipment from the access point at Blackrod is also on the line somewhere
