Joe Callaghan has sent another fine batch of shots of the rapid progress at Farnworth Tunnel.

I have added them to Joe's album here:

and to the Combined Volume here:

Thank you Joe.

Joe has also sent a photo of the new signal north of Farnworth and track in readiness for the slewing due to take place this weekend.

I've added it to Joe's album here:

Thank you on both counts Joe.

PS: Whilst mentioning the Combined Volume I see that Ian Allan has died, aged 93. A man who gave immense innocent pleasure to many, including me. RIP

Thank you ALX400.

Joe Callaghan has sent two sets of shots of the track slewing at Farnworth which took place yesterday. I took a dollop, too. They'll take a while to process, but I hope to publish them all by tonight.

Thank you Joe.

Look forward to the Farnworth shots, having a significant vested interest!

The work at Chorley is the first weekend of track lowering to provide electrical clearances under MVE2/57 and /58, Lyons Lane and Brook Street. There is apparently a lot more work to come at Chorley, including bridge rebuilds and station works.

Previous posts expressed concern about a lack of OLE construction activity - owing to recent developments with regard to Balfour Beatty, I suspect there won't be any such work on phases 4 , 5 or 3 for at least a month, possibly longer.

Very interesting news regarding the track lowering, thanks.

Not sure I can agree with you regarding OLE progress - do you not think there will be work installing foundations over the next month or two as BB seek to finish everything they have already agreed to?

So is anyone going to take over from BB or will this scheme be "paused" indefinitely like MML and TP?

As far as I understand all agreements are off; as of two weeks ago all the construction teams left the job, so no.

Yes, someone will (the official announcements have indicated as much) but I am not aware of who it will be. It could be (and this is only my speculation) Carillion (who were on MMLE) or VolkerRail (who helped bail BB out on Phase 2 and who were on TP East) or Keltbray or even all three, but that's just a list of biggish firms with and OLE capability, so not very mystical!

If the takeover bid for BB by Carillion a year ago had succeeded, maybe we wouldn't be in this position.
Not for this thread, but I suppose the next question is whether this affects the BB part of the GW project (Crossrail).
Anyway, we have a "pause" on yet another electrification project. :(
At least the clearance work seems to be going well.

It should allow BB to concentrate on GWEP, that way at something will get done (by them). I wouldn't be too concerned, honest. ;)

But is there a cause for concern on Manchester-Blackpool? Although this seems to have run pretty well so far, the main contractor walking out half way through the job sounds like a good recipe for time and cost overrun.

I share this concern. It simply does not look credible that Phase 4 will be ready for EMUs by December 2016 based off the rate of progress we have seen.

Sorry, I must have missed something living down south as I do now....but......"the main contractor walking out half way through the job"...is this correct about BB?

If so then the answer to "I suppose the next question is whether this affects the BB part of the GW project (Crossrail)" is YES, IT SHOULD, the buggers should be binned from every project they are involved in on the entire railway and fined £millions.

These "private companies" trying to make vast profits from the railway should be treated with utter contempt by Networkrail/DaFT... moaning "we're not making enough money, this project is harder than we thought"? Really? Underbid the opposition, win the contract, what do you expect? Maybe do some proper due diligence and don't just bid low expecting to be paid off for "issues"...screw them.

hm.....I don't think my brother works for them anymore..maybe?

That's interesting - I had been assuming that LDECR's Bridgeoscope was a complete list of necessary bridge reconstructions and raisings (as distinct from track lowerings).

Also, until the last couple of days, I'd been assuming that all track lowering needed in the Chorley area was done in last year's blockade.

I'm guessing that last year's work was all west of the station, while the work just starting is to the east?

Could anyone tell me whether it will be possible to view the tunnel boring machine from a public location on the day as it sets off on its journey? And if so, how do you access that place, where can you park nearby and when is it likely to be?

Thanks everyone

My source has kindly sent the following:

Snowball makes a valid point, so here's the detail:

MVE2/59 Chapel Street Subway (22 miles 300y-ish) - re-decked as a result of track slews

MVE2/60 Chorley Station Subway (22 miles 320y-ish)- re-decked as a result of track slews and speed increases (which are unrelated to each other).

Thank you Mr/Ms X.

I've now added the full set of photos and films from the weekend.

ALX400 sent some more of track lowering at Chorley, I've added them to his album here:

I've explored all around the site and talked to locals. I've concluded that the only legal and safe place is on the footbridge between Kearsley Station and the southern tunnel mouths. Joseph_Locke has rightly referred to this as the Viewing Platform.

In the Spring it was a fine place to view the tunnel and works, but now trees are in full leaf the line of sight is rather restricted, but not blocked altogether.

The bridge has been built to modern spec, so something to stand on is a good idea, given where the TBM will set off from.

The best place to park is Kearsley station car park, which is at the end of Station Road, a cul-de-sac off Stoneclough Road.

A poorly maintained public track runs from the car park alongside the line to the footbridge, the track is wet in all weathers, making WELLIES IMPERATIVE.

Alternatively you could park on Church Road and walk to the footbridge from the other direction. The downside is that the path to the bridge is compressed earth and steep, presenting a slip-on-your-backside-and-skate-ten-feet risk, as I learned the hard way.

The footbridge is some distance from the tunnel, so binocs are essential for viewing and a half-decent zoom for photography and filming. There are a good few shots in the Combined Volume for you to get the idea.

As for when, I've read somewhere that it'll take them 3 weeks to assemble the TBM on site. I hope someone will report and.or photograph that happening and give us a clue. Maybe one of our professionals will be able to tell us exactly, but right now, I haven't seen owt clear.

Happy hunting

Dave

Will the tunnel boring be done 24/7 ??. Just thinking about local residents and the noise vibrations etc. Also the removal by road of spoil wold mean lorries coming and going at night ?

My guess is no unless they get behind schedule. I hope Mr Locke comes along to give the insider answer.

Thanks for that comprehensive reply Dave.

I too would welcome any dates as to when it will set off, as I intend to be there if I'm not away anywhere. Also a young train fan friend and his dad, who live locally, would also like to see it depart.
