If you have ever had to deal with Black Frothday from a non-bargain hunter's perspective, you'd understand why shop workers detest it...

Fair enough but then again no one is forcing you to take a job in retail! And it is only one day a year. Try being a Copper on a Friday / Saturday night when some Muppet is sick on your uniform!

Well for the majority of us retailers, we do feel sorry for coppers having to deal with the drunks and the drugged. It really can't be much fun whatsoever!

I don't think anyone's having a "my job's worse than your job" competition! :p

The images of people jumping over each other for a TV...just seems so wrong. Like animals :(

Last Black Friday I went to the pub and had a few pints of Stout, I quite like the idea ... (to be fair, that describes most Friday's). :D

I'll be nowhere near any shops participating in this over-hyped nonsense, that generally only seems to benefit the bigger stores.

Might get a few veggies for tea from my LOCAL greengrocers though.

Consider yourself very lucky that you were able to merchanise on Boxing Day! These days, in some retail chains (which will remain anonymous) you'd be doing it overnight on Christmas Eve.

True. We would start the work from lunchtime til closing on Boxing Day, in fairness.

Despite privatization still no trains on December, 25 and 26?
Couldn't they use the 442s for running services in Christmas Day? ;)

BTW, not sure if it's been said but after last year Asda is not taking part in Black Friday, so no 500 inch Polaroid TVs for a tenner this year. Maybe because they weren't even worth 50p.

When "I were a lad" Sales were something special ........

I used to hotfoot into Town when "The January Sales" started (nothing open Boxing Day then) to purchase the latest Action Man offerings. A ten shilling note would but quite a bit in years gone by - almost laughable today 50p !!!

Sales have been devalued by the likes of DFS and Dreams et al who seem to be constantly in "sales mode" as one "never to be repeated" ends the next one starts.:p

Speaking of retailing, interesting to read that the SNP are going to vote against the extension of Sunday Trading Laws in England as it may "adversely affect the wages of Scottish Workers" - talk about gross hypocrisy when Sunday trading is virtually unrestricted in Scotland

For me Black Friday has always been the last Friday before Christmas when all the office parties are.

Black because of the number of black eyes the twice a year drinkers are sporting the next day as they can't handle their drink and have gotten themselves in a fight.

Even blacker with the number of drivers who think that they can still drive home!

When you were a 'lad', how many 50ps did you get per week and how many do you get now.

With regards to any large store in a sizable settlement, are they required to give formal notification to the police authority for any such special event where large crowds are expected to gather external to their premises?

Apparently not, given the chaos last year. Stores cheaped out by not providing their own security and then called the police when all went to hell.

As mentioned above, ASDA have pulled out this year and some other chains are expected to follow suit. Apparently the event was causing large financial distortion to the late year sales figures - where stores normally charge full price in the run up to Christmas, they were suddenly cutting prices. As a result, customers were not buying large ticket items in November to wait for 'Black Friday' to see if they were discounted.

I knew the shops would not take long to extract as much as possible from this American import. I was making a visit to Ashton-under-Lyne earlier today and one large independent shop had a huge poster in its window....
Black Friday MUST end on Sunday....<(

Is there a TV advertisement now talking about "Black Five Days"...

Oh dear! I have just been browsing online for a new computer monitor and it does seem the definition of "Friday" is not confined to 24 hours as one would expect.

I wonder if I'll get away with applying the same logic when using my rail ticket dated for tomorrow over the course of a week <D
