I just wonder how many Bite cards are used regularly. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else offer one when buying from an SSP outlet.

True, it was amazing to see so many people using the facilities and rarely see a bite card proffered. Some of the Big orders would have been saving pounds :p

Exactly - its not really that well advertised, is it? I can't imagine that SSP are going to lose that many customers from this, as I'm doubtful they've had so many in the first place.

I still like the Pumpkin Hot Chocolate (as those who've read my trip reports will see!) so will still use it, but I'm not a regular rail traveller anyway. When I do a day trip I like to start it with a breakfast roll deal and you can't get a Bite discount on that anyway.

Please don't laugh too much, but apparently SSP are doing this because they've listened to their customers!

In a reply in which they get my name wrong, here's what they sent me:

Dear <first and last name were reversed here>

Thank you for your email regarding the changes we have made to your Bite card.
We are sorry to read that this has disappointed you.

I can confirm that we have made these changes as our Brand and Marketing Teams have come up with some ideas that we feel will suit each individual customer’s specific needs and requirements.

We have listened to what our customers have told us and they said they like discounts, but they also like offers based on things we know they like. So we have decided to give you both instead of the one.

If you have heard nothing about these updates to the Bite discount, please log in to your account and make sure you tick the box that says "Yes I want extra bite" on your account page, otherwise you will not receive emails from the Bite Team explaining any new amendments or to provide you with promotional offers.
(Please also check your junk/spam folder as at times our emails can be diverted to this inbox).

Thank you for taking the time to contact us

Kind regards

Same email received here. Probably make more use of Greggs and Costa. Will not touch Starbucks out of principle.

Brilliant.

The finest example of corporate drivel I've read in a long time. No wonder private enterprise has an image problem.

Not as stupid as it sounds. Waitrose have chosen this approach with their loyalty card. Free coffee in their stores and the occasional 10% or higher discounts on selected items. The coffee offer gets me into a store most mornings, so I often buy something else while I am there.

With the high prices charged, it was just about worth buying something at their outlets with 20% off. At 10% it won't be worth it for us, so more lost custom. Maybe they recognise this and think it will be more than offset by new customers coming in thanks to the wonderful new offers. They might even be right.

Quite agree with you there.

I often use Greggs for my lunch at work - so just time to start heading there when I'm out and about to. Will now have to start finding the Costa and (slightly more elusive) Caffè Nero outlets on stations :)

I know there's a Greggs at Newcastle, do they have many other station locations?

Indeed. It will be interesting to see if any of these wonderful "new offers" will actually materialise or whether, if they do arise, whether they will be for the most extortionate items which are only available in London. Either way, I'm out.

Why do I get the feeling these 'new offers' will be closer to spam advertisement emails?

As a slightly off topic, but sort of relevant question, where station buffets from the BR days considered good value?

The quality of BR Sandwiches was legendary. There was a joke in the old days along these lines:

Are these Sandwiches fresh?
Dunno, I've only worked here for a month

The BR BLT was the height of sophistication thirty years ago, accompanied by a Maxpax Coffee or McEwans Export - followed by a B&H all in the Buffet Car :p

I still get the Bite card discount at my local SSP-run Starbucks. Given that they are no longer meant to offer it, it will be interesting to see if they reduce the discount to 10%!

Funnily enough the one in the station at Newcastle has now closed, after the renovations. Not sure if Network Rail wanted to increase the rent (highly likely), but there is one straight across the road and another 3 or 4 within a 10 minute walk. Coffee is half decent and the collector cards come in handy.

Can't stand Starbucks, too corporate (do they still insist on putting people's names on the cup?) and also the tax issue doesn't sit well with me.

Nor me, which makes it even more silly to reduce usage further from the few that do.

Unless, shock, it's to finally phase it out completely...

For sure. They'll be things like 'first month free on Netflix' or some other deal offered by anyone and everyone.

Total waste of time, and the take up will be crap meaning they'll stop and the scheme axed.

Had my last 20% off Burger King today to commemorate this sad event.

While I was there I noticed they now do a Triple Whopper!!

If you are particularly fond of flat burger parties it is a relative bargain as a meal - just £6.39 (including BITE discount for this week only) ;)

Just tried to use my Bite card and was told she had to charge me 25p extra. She thought it was a credit card I was trying to pay with!

That shows how many people are using them then! I must admit neither of us have used ours for a few months, but that's because we haven't really been anywhere!

They've always done them, you just needed to ask!

Had possibly my last Bite card discount (at least at 20%) - nam-po noodles at Paddington. Oh well, when it goes down to 10% I will probably be looking for local supermarkets to get drinks and cold food from!

Is Patty someone you met at the burger party? Did she have nice baps?

(Sorry!)

I was told today that whilst the discount is decreasing to 10%, there'll be other promotions and offers instead. For example I was told at Upper Crust, buy a baguette and get a drink at discounted price, then the 10% overall discount.
