It's not the driving of these stupid cars that irritates me. It's the racket they make (either from the exhaust/engine or speakers that wouldn't be out of place at a rock concert) which creates a real nuisance and disturbance. The laws need tightening to outlaw this in the first place (assuming it's not already) and the penalty should be an immediate confiscation of the car and you can either have it back when it's been fixed or have it crushed into a cube

I've been doing a bit of research, and I think there is a maximum noise limit under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations. Unfortunately, I can't find them on the internet.

There are noise regulations for vehicles, though they tend not to be enforced that much ina lot of places.
Straight through exhausts are illegal.

...I also would of thought that members on this forum would understand that, as they are railway enthusiasts and are used to getting bad reputations from 'stereotypes' themselves?

Not exactly the same though... unless you can point me in the direction of a chavved up train? :D

I'm sure if some areas of railway enthusiasm got their hands on a loco, then they'd fit it with a bigger engine, bigger exhaust. Luckily, they probably won't!

Pimp my loco.

Now that would be worth watching.

I'd also like to see someone chipping a 313 to get it over 100mph!!

A lot of you seem to be think that a lot of these chavved up cars seemed to be mechanically sound, I have seen plenty of sights that can disprove these points. My favourite mechanical failure is this guy had modified his car so it rides to low to the ground, it was in fact so low that the larger exhaust scraped along the ground, also I dont think the car had dampeners so it was bouncing all over the place.

I think a 465 already looks like its had a cheap body kit done to it already.

Are people still putting those silly blue lights on the front like they were a few years back or have they stopped that now?

Those still doing this are just asking to be stopped, displaying a blue light at the front of a vehicle is a no no and just asking to be done for 'impersonating a police car' :)

Yep there are some eejits out there with the 1.0 litre noise machines but as usual these are the ones who get noticed and remembered which gives anyone who modifys their car a bad name, same with train enthusiasts who trespass to get pics etc, they are the ones that are remembered and give the whole group a bad name.

Barryboys...well yep they can get some right pap which is good but there are some right clueless oiks in there, one posted up a picture of the type of car I have stating how someone had put an evo/scoob spoiler on it and what an idiot etc etc, luckily somone shot him down and pointed out it was standard fit not a mod lol:D

I personally love tinkering with my cars and have fitted a BMC-cda enclosed induction kit (OE setup was designed for the 2.0 V6 as opposed to my 2.5V6), custom built stainless exhaust with de-cat (Still passes emmissions as there a pre-cats in the manifolds). This has pushed my power output up to 200bhp, up from 173bhp standard and has the added benefit of improving my mpg:D. Other than that what I prefer doing is 'upgrading' know weak points on my cars, for example the clutch hydraulics are a know weak point on my main car, these have been upgraded so a possible future breakdown risk has been minimised. I enjoy driving but save my foot to the floor times for when I take the car to knockhill or the like, great fun and a lot safer than pretending your fast and furious on the mean streets of your local city lol:D

You're the classic car enthusiast and respect to you! Car modification, if done seriously, is a real work of art.

I think the nearest to a chav mobile in the railway world would probably be the prototype Deltic. They all have that mental, revving the nuts of it engine sound, and it is in that light blue livery with speed whiskers and go faster stripes with a light grey roof and a bloody big headlight. Light engine it could probably give the average chav mobile a run for it's money too, whilst sounding much better.

In "actually fast" tuner terms, the rail equivalent has to be SNCF's shortened "record specials"- set 325 (the Atlantique set) especially was given bigger driving wheels, smoothed over connections between cars and I think even a spoiler on the trailing end The Duplex set used on LGV Est was given additional power bogies as well as most of those mods- see the "preparation" sections here. Proper tuning, definitely not "barry"!

Yes but who really cares what you think about 465s Karl? ;)

I understand some members points, but if people want to 'upgrade' there car there free to do so, even if it looks like a complete pile of **** (Most usually do espicially Vauxhall Novas etc...) its there money and if they want to throw money down the drain making there cars look like a pile of **** let them do so, if theres anything wrong with it the police will sort them out. I think the more embarrising part of this is when they look back when there older...

What about this 'Baby Deltic' project, To me it seems the same, there cutting a Cl37 about to create a unsuccesful class of locomotive?

They're not free to do so at all without telling their insurance company what they plan to do or have done! Hence the vast majority of these wrecks will be on a road near you, uninsured. Not funny at all if they mow somebody down or go into your car

You are just assuming that they haven't done things properly, presumably because you are prejudiced against them.
I think it's a safe bet that if a traffic cop pulls into a car park and does nothing, everything is in order!

What utter rubbish you write again. I'm a qualified engineer and I know bad suspension, bald tyres, illegal lighting, iffy brakes etc when I see it.

And it doesn't matter if they do their modification correctly or not, they have to tell their insurance companies which most don't. The fact is, most of these young males are a danger on our roads and more should be done about them.

And the traffic police don't? Of course - they're never going to know traffic law are they!

Point of order if I may, and to bring things back on topic....

When I went through the modifying phase of my life, all my insurance company were interested in were the mechanical modifications, ie anything done to the engine, brakes or suspesnsion.

Now I never touched the engine as I knew I wouldn't have been able to afford the insurance. Likewise I never touched the brakes as lets be honest, on a 1.2L there is no need. I did get the suspension lowered (professionally) however the premium increase was negligible.

I was told that any modifications to the body work would see the insurance still being valid but they would not take these costs into account should the car get written off or stolen. To that end I added a few bits and pieces :)

Personally I would say (going by my experience) that those that put money into their car by way of modifications (no matter how crap they look) are more likly to have a road worthy and MOT'ied car.

The point is don't judge a book by its cover or a car by its bodywork mods....or simply becuase the driver is an 18yr old saxo driver.

I can see your point and I agree to a certain extent, but i wish you could see what I could see on a daily basis in my neighbourhood

The problem I've got where I live is not modified cars, its those petrol scooters.

They buy them cheap, get there thrills from driving through public parks and so on with them, and dump them and set them on fire. It is a weekly process where I live. But thats not to say all people who drive 'scooters' drive them like complete idiots. :)

Well don't comment at all! Since when has it been a joke? (PM in future)

Lets get back on topic its got out of hand a couple of times today which I feel part responsible for already.

Alright alright dont get all uppity, your moaning like your 60 odd years old.

This has probably been mentioned, but I think I will bring it up anyway, not all people who drive modified cars are chavs, in fact theres this very nice jamican chap who lives near me, he modifies cars and he seems decent.

Much easier just to remove the silencer! Portuguese Railways (CP) did that with their 1931s, they sound rather good....
