Anyway I'll try getting back on topic before you lot start fireing stuff other than particles at eachother at great speed.
so is this gonna happen alot more now that CERN have got away with this and not killed us all.
Although maybe we did all die and this is god way of showing his imaculate sense of divine humor??

Quick update from the control center
1730pm (BST)

So things have begun to calm here and the head honchos have gone to ponder their success or do a few more media interviews. The remaining staff in the control room are enjoying ruminating on a remarkable day.

Still not much alcohol being consumed. The sobriety is impressive but perhaps a trip to the right bar in Geneva will tell a different story. And who would blame them if it did?

There are still people intently studying the screens and there isn't a facebook page or an msn message in sight.

The CERN bosses took a big risk when they agreed to launch the first beam in the full glare of publicity and it has paid off. One was honest enough to say it didn't feel such a smart idea when the cooling was not working so well. Fortune favours the brave though and all who have been enthralled today will watch this project with interest in the weeks , months and indeed years to come. As the Director General of CERN told his team 'C'est la fin du debut'. It was from Churchill of course 'This is the end of the begining'. Apt that the phrase was from world war 2 where science and indeed physics played such a big role. Now and here at CERN it is a symbol of international co operation and constructive progress from which all are sure to benefit.

It should develop our knowledge alot if all has gone to plan but I think out of this they will only discover what happened in the first few minutes.
As for finding the god particle (probably not this time) as If I have lernt anything from history you only seem to get the answers when you think bigger.
They say it was almost as fast as the speed of light well..........I have this feeling of unless they replicate the conditions exactly they may not find exactly second for second particle for particle what happens.......


Just a hunch....

So, firstly you disregard what I said and say that you are getting the information from someone at CERN. Then I see this quote and it is directly from the Radio 4 website which is the place I saw the information in the first place?
If you skip back a couple of hours from your copy and paste then you will see what they have said about "possibly" trying a collision tomorrow or in the next few days.

Ooo so all this information is from the BBC 4 website and not NASA Control or where ever he has connections with?

Maybe the NASA/CERN person is actually feeding it to GWRtom first? That is what I am expecting to hear anyway.

The abbreviation NASA was used lightly to emphasise just what type of connection you were trying to make. You have been severely rumbled and now have no reason to question anybody else.

Steven Hawkings has bet £50 they won't find the "God boson" and will have to chuck out the Standard Model they spent so long on :D.

I trust the guy as he's a fellow of the college I'm going to in a month's time, but I wonder how the scientists will justify their expensive new toy if they don't find it.

If a singularity were to be created it would not be able to suck the Earth in as they'd be no room for the energy created from the mass. Unless we're wrong about conservation of energy <D Seriously there's no point losing sleep over it!

All this is well and good but the important question is - will it be able to cook a chicken tikka masala with rice from frozen in less than 6 minutes/ ;)

If not why bother....

As an aside when studying physics (many years ago) part of the syllabus was nuclear physics. The first thing i was told on the first day of lessons was ' we don't really know how it happens- just what happens- it's all just educated guesses' :)

PS to the ones wondering why spend all this money- it will almost certainly be about the military. Powerful technologies like this progress at a scary rate and any government with the cash will invest to be involved in them -whether they will admit it or not- because they dare not let potential opponents get ahead in the arms race- far more danger to life from our/their politicians than from any bearded physicists sadly.........
