it wont make a black hole
trust me my dad's works for QinetiQ he's an expert in this thing
and the chances of a black hole are 1 in 1000000000000

If it was a black hole; we'd die instantly. No problems there  Seriously; we'll be fine and it'll be an interesting experiment.

but why anyway? and it does make me think that they are actually putting the whole world at risk...

and the BBC are supporting it? They'll be at the biggest loss as no one will be listening or watching the TV ;) ;)

Well they are looking for the Higgs boson, or the so-called 'God particle'. This disappears after 1 trillionth of a second. Curious why they want to bother really, because a similar thing can be observed with some TOC's advance purchase tickets :)

How do H&S test that a machine won't create a black hole...?

The huge problem is that no-one really knows what's going to happen when they switch the damn thing on, even the scientists who designed and built it. Not even GWRtom's Dad can know.

Nobody can really know, untill its been switched on. And if it all goes tits up, the scientists are in a good position as no one can blame them for it!

Honestly though, I think that they should have to had asked everybody first, or something, theres some people trying to oppose it, go them!

Its a rather pointless experiment anyway, look what better things that money could have been spent on.

Also, how can you be worrying about it at school? It will have happened before your there. 0830 am.

Odds are it won't go wrong. So don't worry.

Although I take the view that there are better things to spend the money on, once tha's been put aside however, I'm all in favour of the project. We've never accelerated particles to this speed before, and it will hopefully help us understand why there was some matter left after the big bang, that did not become pure energy after "clashing" [if that's the word] with anti-matter.

Let's face it if they manage to wipe us out then we go out as we came in and well we wouldn't have time to notice it.
Realisitically I think due to all the money that they have been given due to many years creating a fool-proof plan I highly doubt anything other than interesting scientific discoveries can come from this.
But now I think about I may be a tad worried at that precise minute but after a minute of feeling Impending doom then if im alive then we can all rejoice.
I just find it facinating how there actually gonna manage to get closer to finding the god particle maybe in the future they will be able to use it somehow.......

Well it will get me out of a bit if it does all go wrong. I'd hate to be on earlies and have to work part of the day before the world disappears. Being on lates means that I'll be asleep and miss all the fun, but at least I'll be spared having to go to work later.

Every cloud, and all that. ;)

i understand there is still a risk but if a black hole was to appear
it would be unstable and would disappear before it grew

The primary function of the LHC is not to find the Higgs, that is simply what is portrayed in the media as it is the one thing the LHC is uniquely capable of studying, and that no other device can study.

There are hundreds of experiments slated for the LHC, and thousands of diagnostic projects awaiting its commision so the respective researchers can obtain their spectra.

Its a particle accelerator. Particle accelerators are used to produce spectra on the atomic topology of a macromolecule (recently, particle accelerators have been used almost exclusively to study the structure of proteins ... which is necessary to treat and cure disease).

The LHC is just a more powerful particle accelerator, powerful enough now that it can address questions about the fundamental properties of reality in our universe

They are operating at the quantum level. All effects at the quantum level are remarkably (and incredibly bizzarly) different then effects on a macroscopic scale. In paticular, the diameter of a quantum gravitational singularity is close to planks length (10^-35m), which is quadrillions of times smaller then the smallest particle, its like fitting the earth through a hole the size of a pea, good luck

The 'Black Holes' are NOT cosmological black holes. They are quantum gravitational singularities that operate completley differently then those in space. and by different, I mean, that do not attract matter into them, as they are quadrillions of times too small for even the smallest particle to interact with the point singularity.

Ime a bit worried about this but I doubt anything will hapen and but on the other hand if anything dose hapen then it means i wont have to go to work.

Isn't part of the fun the mystery? I don't want to know what happens. It's like someone finding the Loch Ness Monster. The fun is in the mystery.

GWRtom has made a good point; any black holes would be unstable and so small anyway so we probably need not worry.
