Aldershot station toilets were quite disgusting a few years ago with discarded litter and blocked toilets. There is an ultra violet light installed in an attempt to stop the heroin users injecting themselves as it is very difficult to find a vain. I dislike Guildford Station Loo's as they have the horrible metal toilets and sinks and you now have to pay for the privilage.

Many operators have privatised station toilets in mainland Europe. Many are run by a swiss company called McClean, pretty expensive at 70 cents a go but they are spotless with all sorts of 'features' like self-cleaning rotating toilet seats (yes, really), complimentary mint imperials and those Dyson hand dryers.

Shrewsbury's are quite compact now that someone's mentioned it. I find Sheffield's nice too, certainly the ones on the concourse.

Just remembered the worst (aside from Manchester Victoria, they had to close the actual toilets in the gents there because of undesirable activity IIRC): Brighton. Underground, stank to high heaven, and were so poorly lit you could only ever see five foot ahead of yourself!

As I am a Blackpool lad, those at Blackpool North aren't spectacular, dim lights, hardly ever does the hot water work, no soap & even if one is having a pee, it's bloody freezing in Winter!

IMHO, Euston has pretty clean toilets, along with Liverpool Street.

Manchester Piccadilly's are quite clean, but those over at Manchester Victoria require renovation.

It would be interesting to know from Network Rail how much of the charge for using their facilities is actually used to maintain them.

The cost of the toilets is quite high. I suspect that the charge is a way of sticking barriers there to keep undesirables out more than it is a desire for money. Profit is not the motive.

Have SWT's improved? I recall those outside the rich commuter belt as being odious. NXEA's (well Abellio's now, but they can hardly be blamed for them at this point) are pretty bad.

In order to use the toilets at Droitwich Spa, you have to obtain a key from the ticket office - just one toilet around the station building but it's usually relatively clean (from the odd occasion I've been in there). It would be nice to have a proper set of toilets (ie don't need a key; even if it's just a couple of cubicles and/or a urinal.

Never been for a 'sit-down visit', but Donny's toilets have always been clean and fragrant in a nice way.

Add Clapham Junction to the list of bad Toilets, they have only just recently been built but already running into a state of disrepair, cleaned poorly as only 1 station cleaner to do the whole station! And there's a 20p charge, although the toilet barriers are broken so many people don't end up paying anyway!

Ahhh the perks of working in the vicinity of these loos, I get all the bloody complaints!!!

I've had a sit down visit on platform 4 there, and didn't really have any complaints.

Leeds (gents on p8) don't seem that brilliant to me - though were others referring to the chargeable ones on the south concourse?

You're all spoilt! 90% of Merseyrail stations don't even have toilets, and neither do their trains! It's no wonder half the passengers look dehydrated .

Have to say I'm surprised at the negative comments about Shrewsbury and Chester, as I am a frequent visitor to these and always find them perfectly serviceable. Also Crewe, Stafford, LVC and well pretty much every place I've been. I do object to paying 30p at BHM and MAN, and have never partaken of those at LIV for that reason. I think Liverpool Moorfields could do better, only having one cubicle each for Ladies and Gents, and having to ask the barrier staff for access.

Generally it's other users who make toilets unpleasant. I expect there are 'elf & safety regulations about them being cleaned at least periodically, but they can't be monitored 24/7.

In actuality 33% of Merseyrail stations have toilet facilities.

The thing which always amazes me is the determination of modern architects and building engineers to ensure there is no natural ventilation in toilets. This ensures that under all but ideal conditions that ventilation is inadequate and the atmosphere may be less than fresh.

The worst toilets I use are those on Platform 6 at London Bridge and those at Liverpool Central. Both are completely inadequate for the number of people using them and as a result cannot be kept in satisfactory condition.

Shrewsburys are not brilliant at all and I'd also agree on the Manchester Victoria toilets i have smelt better farmyards, i may also add Llandudno Junction far too small 1 urinal 1 cubicle and 1 sink all crammed into a very small space...

At Waterloo and Richmond you can quite easily get through the turnstiles without paying, by pulling the barrier towards yourself and slipping by. I resent paying 30p for the loo on top of £1500 on a yearly season.

I must say the toilets at stations operated by EMT tend to be very good and well kept. IIRC, Kettering won a loo of the year award a few years back!

The worst has be at stations managed by Virgin. Passing yesterday, Wigan's toilets were closed - clearly a good thing! Oh, and what is it with Carlisle having see through windows in the cubicles with no, er, privacy? On the odd occasions I've used the Virgin toilets in the Euston First Class Lounge, they clearly haven't enahnced the 'First Class experience', quite the opposite.
