Best photo taken through a train window

How do you find the camera's autofocus deals with the close proximity of the window glass or do you set it to focus manually?

If the window is clean, it'll just focus on the scene you're aiming at.

If the window is not clean - that's when it'll try to focus on the dirt... but if it's that bad a window, you probably won't be trying to take pictures through it anyway...

Good subject for a thread!

I've managed a couple of reasonable ones over the years.

First is from an open window on a train on the north shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary back in 2012.


The second is through the window of a Metro-North service heading along the Hudson River (a day spent bashing the excellent GE P32AC-DM locos!).

Not amazing as it was taken on my phone, but a cracking view last September from the droplight on a 150. Glad we got held outside Llandudno Junction or I wouldn't have been able to get it steady enough! Looking over to Glan Conwy.

Thank you, really chuffed to finally get a good photo of it. I'd tried a few times on southbound journeys to get decent photos of the viaduct and of Blease Fell to the north. Travelled on Transpennine yesterday, north and south, and there was no chance of taking any photos - the outside of the carriage windows were specked with black marks.

I hesitate to say 'best' photo through a train window because it's something I very rarely attempt, but I took this shot from the window of the morning Belfast-Dublin Enterprise at Drogheda. Believe it or not, I was considering publishing it in the paper that I edit but the designer wasn't keen for some reason...

Surely by definition then that would have been taken from a Class 390 (Pendolino)?

I had another go at Lowgill Viaduct this afternoon, managed to get two shots, and this is probably the best. Was travelling south on Transpennine again - why do the carriage windows on TP's WCML services always seem to be covered in black spots and streaks?



Also managed to get a shot of the Burton & Holme station building from the train; not perfect, but thrilled to get something. Will try again from a train travelling north.
