Best photo taken through a train window

As many on here will be aware, it’s notoriously difficult to take a decent photo through a train window, and even more so when the train is moving.

So, what’s your single best photo you’ve taken through a train window?

This one is mine, which was extremely lucky and taken in great conditions on the West Highland Line Extension a few years ago.

Excellent! West end of Loch Eilt - know it well! Though never tried taking a picture from the train itself.

Ah yes, Glenfinnan viaduct has to be one of the best train-window photography locations in the UK

I tend to try different sorts of photos, so here is my take. I make a feature of the train, reflections and movement rather than try to look like I'm standing still nowhere near a train. Being self critical, I think slightly less foreground tree and slightly more background field would have been better!

Quite a long time ago (who's the skinny young person? ) but this is one of my favourites, somewhere on the Kyle line. Would pass as a novel cover I reckon, with the slightly moody look, and including the view quite nicely! And yes it was a selfie.

This is the only photograph I've ever taken out of a train window - from a GWR 150 looking out over the Exe estuary.
The only defence I can offer was that it was taken on my phone, which I keep getting told is immeasurably ancient...

Was your photo taken through a glass window or an open droplight? It appears the train wasn't moving at the time or surely the foreground would have been blurred due to motion. Either way, it's a cracking shot.

This one, near Invershin on the Far North Line, is probably my best. Ton of good photos on that trip!

Ah, very novel! I see that type of shot attempted on social media quite frequently usually on the Northern ECML for some reason, and it can look quite good.

Absolutely agree, it does look like a book cover, a good effort! The Kyle Line is stunning too and very photogenic.

I like that one, I can feel the warmth of the sun and it's got a pleasant, holiday atmosphere to it. Excellent!

It was literally taken through the glass on a Scotrail 156. I took a lot of photos on that trip and quite a few came out really well, I don't know if it was the low winter light that reduced reflections or something? I guess it's not the fastest line in the world either which probably helped a bit too.

Took this one by a fluke in August 2020 on the line between Oslo and Lillehammer.

The gent in the photo was very friendly - a German tourist with next to no knowledge of English, so a good chance to practice my German!

I've done hundreds! The trick is to get the lens right up to the glass; that minimises the chance of any reflections. Here's a couple of my recent ones...

710 107, taken from on board a 720 on 17th April.

L50 at Wimbledon on 25th February, taken from on board a 455.

Yes. Depending on camera type, if it takes filters a polarising filter also helps. Alternatively, embrace what you've got and make something of the reflections!

I tend to remove any remaining reflections in Photoshop...

Having said that, I haven't touched the two i posted yesterday. those are both exactly how they acme out of the camera - and I don't have any filters in place.

How do you find the camera's autofocus deals with the close proximity of the window glass or do you set it to focus manually?
