The Great Western in Wolverhampton.

Whilst you'll get a rather stiff neck looking skywards up to the viaduct, the pain can be alleviated by the consumption of a quantity of Bathams bitter.

The Trevor Arms at Glynde (not far from Lewes, East Sussex) is right behind Glynde station on the Brighton to Eastbourne line.

It is a Harvey's pub with a very large garden in a very quiet village (unless there is something happening at the Glyndebourne Opera house).

Here is a Google Maps link

Dukes 92 pub in Castlefield Manchester, alongside the lock keepers house and underneath the magnificent railway bridges. Also a very good place to watch rented narrow boaters embarrass themselves as they negotiate the lock in front of a big crowd :D

The South Western Arms in St Denys is right next to the station, has a large beer garden adjacent to platform 4 and serves quite an extensive range of real ales.

Alas, the foliage means that you can just about see the tops of the trains that go by.

as are the Dolphin and the Junction - I used to commute from St Denys and manys the time I was mysteriously "delayed" on the way home :D

I'm not sure if those pubs are even still open. I know the Dolphin was closed for a while, but maybe it's re-opened now. It's been a while since I've been over St Denys way.

The Hazel Pear in Acton Bridge

Y'know, one of these days I'm going to get a train to Acton Bridge instead of Hartford. I've still never actually been there, despite having been driven past the station countless times. :D

The Welsh Oak on the Risca/Rogerstone border backs onto the Ebbw Valley Line - OK so all you'll see is a couple of 150s an hour nowadays but it was very impressive to be there back in the days of 37s and coal/steel trains. Plus the car park is but inches away from the 4ft.

The 'Harvest Home' at Greet, Gloucestershire has great views of the G&WR trains arriving and leaving Winchcombe station.
More from the garden than the bar.

Urmston (Liverpool - Manchester via Warrington) has a "beer garden" or fenced off seating area actually on the Liverpool bound platform - however the frequency and variety of rolling stock on offer makes you want to sit inside.

I agree, but pub has some top beers..............shame Staylebridge cant have a fenced off drinking zone on the platform, used to be well good...

I see some one mentioned the "Black Lion" at Consall on the Churnet Valley Hertige Line. Well worth a vist at weekends in the summeras its on their passing loop which is signalled so you get trains passingthere, but good luck finding it as its at the end of a private road and then what could only be called a ballasted farm track. Take a 1" OS map. You have been warned. However is a great pub with good food and also the Caldron canal next to the railway. Must also be the only pup you have to cross the tracks to gain acess as there is no road acess everything comes in over the canal and foot crossing on the railway.

I know this one quite well, and it's not too difficult to find- Simply park your car at Froghall Wharf and enjoy the walk down the canal towpath! ;)

At a pinch -- and I accept it's not perfect -- the Continental in Preston has a very close view of the WCML ;)

That is a pinch! Fantastic ale but you're only likely too see a very occasional freight. Further up South Meadow Lane you get a better view from the BAe club (which is not overly keen on checking for membership cards).

You'd see trains passing the Midge Hall on the Preston-Ormskirk branch than the Conti :)

Also, The beer garden at The Rake on Borough market has partial views of 465 and 466s.

There's no beer garden, but a good seated area in the Goodman's Field by Tower Bridge to watch 357s heaad to and from Fenchurch St. It does have the disadvantage (in my opinion) of being a Wetherspoons outlet.

Another Wetherpoons, one with outdoor seating, is on London Victoria. Good for watching the hustle bustle while having a relaxing pint.

Good thread, I'll look forward to some exploring :D

There Is a pub in tuxford that has a beer garden facing the ECML

Great Northern Inn Ossington Rd Carlton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire NG23 6NT‎

Not too far from there on the ECML by Carlton SB is the Great Northern Inn. Last time I called it had been taken over as the office for the Caravan Park but it seems to be operational again? (from Google street view).
I used to call on my way home from Perkins Engines, Peterborough to Bolton in the 1970's.

Another one on the ECML is at Tallington Crossing, the "Whistle Stop". Sure it was called something else when I last visited?

Speaking of Wetherspoons. The one on the platform at Aberystwyth has good views, of the train you just got off":(

...all the workers sat out on the platform enjoying a post-work drink or two. Have to say I thought at the time it isn't something you'd see everywhere (plus the beer may get a rather pleasant(!) taste of unburnt diesel in it too :P)

My beer doesn't stay in the glass long enough for it to get contaminated......:p

Talking about preserved railways, on a visit to Derbyshire's Peak Rail last July. my drinking buddy and I stopped off for some liquid refreshment at the Church Inn, Darley Dale, you can sit against the line watching the trains, although, they aren't very often, but, a nice pint, nonetheless, and the surrounding countryside in Summer is wonderful.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

On the outskirts of Leicester, the Narborough Arms across the road from Narborough Station on the Leicester-Birmingham line isn't a bad shout. Apart from the XC class 170's going back and forth, there is quite a variety of freigh traffic during the week. Sundays often see diverted XC trains along this line when the Derby-Birimingham line via Burton is closed and it is possible to see Voyagers and, better still, HST's.

There is a good selection of ales and cheap too.

Also The Knott in Castlefield which is actually under one the viaduct arches for added sound effects as the trains pass over. Also includes a balcony for Metrolink viewing.

Forgot to mention the 'beer garden' on the platform at Bristol Temple Meads. Great variety of passenger trains and nice ales, but at nearly £4 a pint it's not the cheapest place to be.

If so, it can be added to the "Beer gardens to watch trains from" thread!

street view suggests it may have http://goo.gl/maps/wriKg

Below the Royal Albert Bridge are the Union Inn (the one the Union Jack paint job) and the Royal Albert Bridge Inn on the opposite bank.

Double Locks or The Turf near Exeter :) Not right next to the line, but both have good unobstructed views

Double Locks is about a 40 min walk from the city centre along the Canal Paths. Turf is only accessible on foot or by boat (there is a car park about half a mile away)

The Turf has views of the GW main line and the estuary: you could probably also see Exmouth branch line trains with through a pair of binoculars!

There's a ferry at weekends from the town centre quay at Topsham (about 10 - 15 minutes' walk from the station) or it's a three mile walk north from Starcross; the footpath parallels the railway, so good views of trains.

Great real ale from the Exeter Brewery when I was there a just over a week ago.
