Indeed, both markets are there for commercial customers. I know Billingsgate does allow the general public in but when I've been, there been very few and I can't see how having the markets in the Royal Docks would affect the numbers travelling on the DLR

The existing Billingsgate is next to Poplar DLR, but you hardly see anyone there using it - both buyers and sellers commonly turn up with vans. It's a fish trading operation, not an office.

Poplar is accessible from several directions by road and not just the DLR. Albert Island is "remote" and accessible in only two directions. This will put pressure on the Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge/Woolwich Manor Way both for vehicular and foot traffic. Also Albert Island is restricted in area so facilities like commercial and private vehicle parking may have to be restricted. This will put further pressure on the local roads and public transport systems. The original proposal for the markets was Dagenham but it seems to have fallen through. Also original proposals for Albert Island were for residential and light engineering and other businesses or some such.
Maybe they have something else in mind.

The results from the latest consultation about the extension have been published.

There was strong support (66% in favour) of the Beckton Riverside location and higher (77%) for the Thamesmead location.

Also this comment: “A further consultation on the development of the proposals in 2026. We are then aiming to submit a Transport and Works Act Order application to the Secretary of State for Transport for consent to build and operate the scheme at the end of 2026.”

Today (17 July 2025) I am informing the House of my decision to lift the safeguarding direction for the Thames Gateway Bridge. This reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring our transport and infrastructure supports housing delivery and drives growth as part of the Plan for Change.

The above news item passed me by.

NB Thames Gateway Bridge should not be confused with the container port of similar name at Thames Haven.

And now people are beginning to ask difficult questions regarding a previous post...

Yes, absolutely it’s related.

The safeguarding included land especially on the Thamesmead side which is required for the new developments. The crossing is no longer needed as it is essentially replaced by the DLR.

And freeing up the land ultimately allows the developers to build .. and afford to pay for their DLR contributions.

Wholesale markets are almost entirely reliant on vans and lorries for traders and buyers. DLR has no impact.

Land freed up for housing by Thames Gateway being ditched is negligible. It's mostly land in an area near the roundabout and any homes there will take no longer to reach the Elizabeth line than proposed DLR. Again little impact on the DLR.
