Providing you don't mind the sound of sheep bleating (and Pacers to travel to work on) I would recommend Edale. It's a beautiful place.

It may not quite be as beautiful as some places, but I reckon Lancaster would be an excellent base. Not only do you have a vibrant, historical city with good shopping facilities, you also have direct trains to other scenic places such as the Furness Coast, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

Great Grimsby's just too far, then?
Another consideration is frequency and first/last services, which can be disappointing compared with London commuter services.
