Bars on St Pancras?

The Parcel Yard is nice but very expensive and offers Fullers awful southern ales. I prefer the Betjeman Arms or The Euston Tap. The Bree Louise is further towards Euston Square Tube but well worth it

Nothing wrong with a pint of Pride or ESB . However I'm with you on the subject of the Bree Louise and if you're a member of CAMRA you get a discount on the beers.

I'd imagine one is the Doric Arch outside euston. Nice pub and lots of railway memorabilia.

I concur although its not the biggest pub in the area in terms of size.

The Bree Louise isn't cheap either... but the 50p a pint CAMRA discount certainly helps....

Well St Pancras does have the world's longest champagne bar. Why that's something worth shouting about I don't know.

Long, yes. Wide, no. Always thought that was a particularly clever, almost cheeky, 'claim'.

Mind you, as part of the new King's Cross redevelopment, I noticed a new bar (possibly restaurant) under construction that looks huge. Underneath a new office building, to the left of the new exit (then straight ahead) that you get to from the underpass between STP and KGX.

In fact, given a year or so and there will be lots of new places to go to around there.

I would prefer it if the Parcel Yard offered a range of ales form right along the line as there is so much variation and choice but being tied to Fullers that wont happen.

No worries... enjoy the local beer (though it's probably not real ale!).. Given how much the beer is in the Bree after the discount I'm glad that it is so hefty....

Also, for another day, try googling the "London Drinker" (London CAMRA magazine) - I seem to recall some North London Line pub crawls.... and there are a number of "craft beer" pubs (and a brewery!) close to Hackney Wick station too (though googling is a must as it is a rather strange and run-down area currently)...

From Euston/St Pancras it's straight to the Olympic park for the hockey and back. Won't be hanging around Stratford, no matter how delightful and charming the place is!
Still toying with the tube to Leyton and hitting the north end of the park where the hockey is, but a day return on HS1 (all 6 minutes of it + a toilet which is one up over the tube o a drinking day...) is just over £7 and I get to see St. Pancras, not been for years.

Like the thought of a beer in Euston's 1st lounge, then that pub on St Pancras, off to the games, then back in time for another in the 1st lounge before arriving back into Manchester at more-than-stupid o'clock.

There was that grotty Head of Steam & of course The George. Don't remember the latter having any railway connection though.

The Doric Arch is what was known as the Head of Steam and indeed has lots of railway related stuff.

Hope the toilets have improved. I always think of the Doric as those two ale/cider bars that are always packed when I go. Wetherspoons nearly opened at Euston but refused to share a cellar with The Brittania. Must admit to always drinking at The Betjamin when at St.Pancras. Bit more pricey but what the hell.

In all fairness the toilets are little better than they were but my wife and I tend to alternate between the Bree Louise, The Doric and the Euston Tap if we are travelling up North to visit my in-laws. Sadly the Bree Louise and The Doric are both likely to vanish forever once construction starts at Euston to accommodate HS2.

McGlynns down Argyle Street is my usual Kings Cross haunt. It's more of a locals pub, reasonably priced (although I've not been for some time).

I tend to have a pint fairly regularly around this area too, albeit quite often on the south side of Euston Road where you will find precious few tourists compared to the northern side. A few of my usual haunts are:

There's Mabel's which can get quite busy but has some decent hand pull options.

Then there's the Skinners Arms just around the corner, which is more of an OMP (old man pub) and tends to be fairly quiet. The food's not bad here either.

If you want to feel like you've gone back in time, then The Dolphin is another OMP option. Plenty of ales again, and with a Thai food menu if you're peckish.

If you find yourself on the northern side of Euston Road then there are a couple of gems tucked away between St. Pancras and Euston. The Somers Town Coffee House is more of a gastro pub but pleasant nonetheless, or finally the Prince Arthur is, again, more of an OMP and just round the corner from Euston.

All of the above have decent outside areas too.

Thanks @Jimini for these recommendations and the Exmouth Arms tip from someone earlier in the thread - I'll add that one to the list for my Euston meet-ups.

Personally, I wouldn't touch the Bree Louise with a barge pole. If someone did drag me in, I'd be sticking to the beer on handpump. The ales from the casks behind the bar are, in my experience, warm and badly-conditioned. Just how this place gets awards from the local CAMRA branch is quite beyond me.

I've turned on my heel and left the Euston Tap without ever ordering a drink in more recent times as I have not recognised a single brewery or beer on the list available that I felt confident that I would enjoy while killing time before a train.

As far as I'm concerned, the Doric Arch trumps them both as I know that I can get a reliable pint of Fullers with a decent head on it (well, as decent as you can expect when visiting or frequenting southern climes).

Without wanting to appear to be a condescending t*at, when patronizing the Bree Louise I would / indeed do always go for what ever is on the hand pumps as opposed to anything from the beers on stillage. I hope this helps

Fair do's! The fact is there are more than enough satisfied customers to keep the Bree Louise going so they must be doing something right! I'm in Aus at the moment and whilst they brew some decent stuff everything tends to be stone cold, even in Winter!

Well, I never said that I didn't like the Bree Louise: Quite satisfied with it, in fact - just don't quite understand the level of hype it attracts. I have the same problem with the Ffestiniog Railway, which, while pleasant enough, doesn't seem to require exalting above its peers in quite the way that it usually gets.

Will no doubt end up taking a pint of ale (or three) there again at some point in the near-to-mid future.

Compared to many of the other pubs in the locality, it is at least a true free house and I think that is where much of the hype comes from. You are indeed right about getting a decent pint of Pride at the Doric Arch but in all honesty you can also get that at the Euston Flyer and many other pubs close to the Euston Road.

From what I know of the redevelopment of St Pancras, most of the development was the transformation of the undercroft. it's original use was for the storage of deliveries of the finest ales from Burton On Trent. It doesn't sound like the worlds brewing capital is very well represented in the station today. Marstson's Pedigree anyone?

Walking around the town, it is remarkable how much evidence there is of the dozens of brewery railways, at its peak there were 23 level crossings in the town!
