A few people on here should be ashamed of themselves celebrating an old ladies death.

This thread should be closed.

Ja-wohl, Mein Führer

Also more than one old lady died? Was it an indirect result of Thatcher's policies?

edit: I think this topic must be one of the fastest rates of posting out there :D

Not just any old lady though eh?

Yes, close all threads you don't like.

It's partly that, yes, but on the back of years of no Council House building it was disastrous. Like most things there is no single cause, and NuLab really continued to drop us in the Scheisse long term. I've no affection for them either.

In my view one of the biggest problems is the lack of some form of "Rent Controls".

Landlords jack up the rents and the taxpayer pays for it in increased amounts of Housing Benefit.

Apparently, she is going to have a ceremony, with full military honours, equal status to Diana and the Queen Mother. Who decides what status of funeral she will get? AFAIK, previous deaths of prime ministers such as Heath, Callaghan and Wilson didn't get such special treatment.

Would all the people on here glorifying the death of an old woman be quite happy if I did the same when a member of their family had died.

Of course, where I live now isn't exactly Conservative heartlands - but even (most) Bathonians know what she did was for the best.

Bath used to be staunch Conservative territory in Thatcher's day. The MP was the party chairman Chris Patten, who was one of the main casualties in the 1992 election when Don Foster surprisingly unseated him. Of course, he has since had a good career as the Governor of Hong Kong until it passed to China and now he is chairman of the BBC Trust.

She will be equally loved and villified by sections of the society, as with all the other prime ministers this country has had. She is no different to anyone else in this respect.

But has any other PM ever been so disliked by so many?

The country was in a mess when Thatcher took over in 79. While she got inflation under control, the same can't be said about unemployment. The graph at http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-kingdom/unemployment-rate makes interesting reading - in the years leading up to 1984, unemployment more than doubled to almost 12%.

My condolonces to her family and friends, it will obviously be a sad time for them.

I'm sure Thatcher will be missed by some.......but not by me and my family.

Those of you apparently cheering her death should read the following from Ed Miliband, agree with him, and then be done with it...

"The Labour Party disagreed with much of what she did and she will always remain a controversial figure. But we can disagree and also greatly respect her political achievements and her personal strength."

I honestly didn't know that. I suppose you would having been in Bath at the time though, so thank you :) The city's relative wealth should have made this somewhat obvious thinking about it.

Don Foster has been in ever since then.

That too, although the abolition of such was also a Tory move, although pre-Thatcher.

Why should we 'agree with him'? Are you saying you think all Thatcher-haters are paid up Labour supporters? Or just mindless automatons?

You're stretching it a bit there. As far as I know no member of my family has been in a position to screw over millions and people let alone take it. One does not get respect by avoiding death, one earns it by doing good which Thatcher did - over 8000 miles away!

There is a difference between glorifying someone's death and being happy they've died. The former is putting them on a pedestal, burying any blemishes and making them seem like a saint. Ironically the Soviet Union glorified Lenin's death going so far as to keep his embalmed body in St Petersburg.

I don't think Thatcher would have appreciated me faking sincerity at her death anyway, she knew full well her policies were divisive.

I would imagine it is The Prime Minister - she would also have "lain in state" had she not rejected the idea.

It's not very likely though is it? I can't believe I'm answering such a facile post TBH.

Of course not. But if the current leader of Labour can praise her (even when they disapprove of her) then everyone else should be able to.

The same Ed Miliband who's policies are closer to Thatcher than Attlee? Almost every left-winger in this country knows Labour are Tory-Lite so Miliband's words don't hold much stock

Has any member of your family been responsible for the destruction of Northern industry? Hell, have you ever been Mexbrough or Denaby?

Has any member of your family been involved in a cover up of a football disaster that cost 96 lives, many of them children.

It's sad for her family and that's once reason why people shouldn't really be jumping around with joy but the scars of what she did run deep, deeper than deeper.

Don't for one minute think its all unemployed ex minors either. My dad run a successful business during the Thatcher regime and he wouldn't chuck water on her if she was on fire believe me.

I don't agree with the mass hysteria from some about her death but to ask people to show genuine sadness about it just is not going to happen i'm afraid. That's the reality of it.

Why? That's his opinion.

For you perhaps. For much of society, particularly that in the north, north east, and Scotland those polices lead to an economic wilderness.

So you are saying that Wakefield (where I had just bought my first house in the early 80s) isnt in "the North" then, they must have moved it!

IVO - your naivety is, frankly, shocking. You seem to define the I am all right jack society. I shall not go further as it will simply lead to a ban.

One thing I could get to hate her for is the inevitable snooze-fest of extended news, tributes, then all the documentaries that will follow, the re-hashing of old arguments on nationalisation etc... :)

Still perhaps best to get that out of the way before the next general election.

On the plus side, will we get a day off work for the funeral I wonder :)

What's not very likely ?

That you will be aware that any relative of mine has died. That's at least partly because no relative of mine has ever set out deliberately to destroy the lives of millions of their fellow countryfolk.

DarloRich - you have said everything that I wanted to say about this in your first post, thanks!....and for those who want the thread closed because you find that it might be disrespectful for a number of posters to vent their true feelings about this hateful woman, well, you must be walking around with your eyes closed, her decade in power (and followed up by new labour) has led to all that is wrong with the UK today...housing (as mentioned), deregulation (banking crisis), terminal decline of our industry, slavish adherence to market forces, (is anything British owned?), and what I call the 'me first' culture - as exemplified in the current governments vilification of anyone receiving benefits..I could go on.
Do I feel saddened? No...I have more grief for the 10 children killed by NATO bombing in Afghanistan yesterday than this old woman.

No argument here.

midlands that - almost the south! ;)

Maybe using the Midlands Today definition of Midlands ;). Speaking of Midlands Today I can't wait to hear which tenuous link they make to the Midlands so they can make this top story. Probably being born in Grantham

Yes I was. If you look at Wikipedia, Bath had been Tory for many decades previous.

In 1992, the Lib Dems made a special effort in Bath and they almost certainly got the student vote. The Tories were particularly unpopular with students at the time because the student grant was frozen and loans started to come in. I remember meeting Don and Paddy Ashdown as they had a rally at the university. Don't remember Patten making an appearance. I suppose he thought he couldn't lose so didn't put in the effort.

Landlords jack up the rents and the taxpayer pays for it in increased amounts of Housing Benefit.

Rents haven't gone up particularly fast, outside of a very few areas in central London now popular with foreign despots where a small number of people were getting £20K+/year in HB.

Capital values have risen much faster than rents and this means that people cannot afford to buy a home.

I think you are getting a little carried away with the rhetoric....no one would deliberately set out to destroy the lives of millions....how would they ever be re-elected ?
