Barnetby junction

I am hoping to spend a day in this area on Sunday 5th. The question is. Is it worth going on a Sunday for freight traffic?. I work school times and weekends are my only chances to get out and about.

The 5th is a Saturday. Saturday mornings aren't bad but I wouldn't bother on a Sunday.

i got the dates wrong, i did mean the 6th. Usually either day is good but with. Commitments, that day is my only free day. I. Take your advice and have a go on a Saturday very soon.

Sunday evenings can be very busy in that area, but freight doesn't tend to
'kick off' properly until after 5pm...

I read on another forum that Barnetby is the busiest location in the UK for railfreight. Not sure if that also applies to weekends though

A lot of it is the same traffic/engines running back and forth between Immingham & Scunthorpe/Yorkshire Collories & Power Stations.

Willesden Junction can't be far behind & that probably sees a wider range of traction and different engines.

Surely that is not a problem if your only going to spend no more than 4 hours there in a row and even then you've got the long distance flows like oil tanks which will still produce different traction.
Willesden Jct also has the traffic but I'd give it 1 out of 10 for photography & setting when compared to Barnetby Junction with its semaphores and is a relatively pleasant location to hang around.

I was talking to an EWS driver who said that after 2-00pm on a Saturday through to 2-00pm Sunday afternoon was about the only 24 hrs that there was usually no Coal trains running and most freight stopped just about.

That is fairly general throughout the country.
Most "freights" on Sat afternoon and Sun mornings are engineering trains.

Correct - in my experience, while Saturday mornings can be a bit busier,
there is always plenty of freight on a Saturday afternoon, so it's rather
misleading to say things like "freight can and will tail off almost completely anytime after 12 o'clock."

I wouldn't call 3 services in each direction once a week rare. It's actually a regular service! If it was rare, it'd be something like once every 7 years, not once every 7 days!

As has been said, freight coming out of Immingham does tend to pretty much stop (may keep the odd coal & iron ore flows to Scunthorpe running, but that's about it) at around lunchtime, but there's still loads to come back, plus regular light engine shuffling about, so it doesn't completely die off, it just tends to mostly be in one direction.

By the way, Barnetby isn't a junction. That title belongs to Wrawby Junction.

As the Signal Box which controls the junction is called Wrawby Junction, it's not Barnetby Junction! It's always been known as Wrawby Junction. Bear in mind there used to be 3 Signal Boxes within 1/2 a mile of each other: Barnetby East, Barnetby West & Wrawby Junction. Adding another location with Barnetby in it's title will just create more confusion.

As to where it's actually located, there's very little in it in distance from Wrawby Junction to Wrawby village or Barnetby.

Their always seems to be a great collection of photos in Rail Magazine around Barnetby Junction now and again.

What is the future of the semaphores in this location does anyone know ?

Barnetby Junction is underrated. There is normally about 2000 spotters & photters on Doncaster station yet only about 5 at Barnetby.

The shot of freight trains coming off Wrawby Jct as they accelerate towards Barnetby station is one of the most photographic you can possibly get from a station in the country, especially at sunset.

You are quite right (Lincolnshire Yellow belly Lad) My photos have Barnetby or Wrawby on then like this one.

Wrawby village is 3 miles from Wrawby railway junction and Barnetby le wold village is about 1.5 miles from the railway junction.
But most poeple stand on the station to watch the trains so 'Barnetby' is what we call it.
