The Barking Riverside extension of the London Overground will open to passengers next Monday – 18th July, TfL has confirmed. Just last month, TfL said that it was bringing the opening forward from this autumn to sometime this summer, and has now confirmed the opening date as next Monday.

Although the station opens on Monday 18th July, the line will close on its first weekend, Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July due to Network Rail works along the Gospel Oak to Barking (GOBLIN) branch of the London Overground, after which the station will be open seven days a week.

TfL seems to send out embargoed press releases, which can be published in the morning, so lots of news sites carry it.

For reasons that are not clear to me, the TfL Press Office seems to hold back on getting it uploaded to TfL’s own website usually until 10:30 - 11:30 so few hours after everyone else has reported it. Could you imagine if they waited 3 hours to upload a service update to website, so the thinking behind this needs to be explained to me.

It's quite normal.

I was recently tipped off around 8pm by a journalist at one of the main broadcasters of the contents of a very interesting press release which a government department had embargoed until midnight. I was able to help the journalist with what it meant, provide some useful facts etc, so that they were ready to hit send on their view on it as soon as the embargo time had passed. (And so was I!)

And similarly with an announcement the PM made one day at 8pm. The media knew its contents around 30 minutes previously (and so did I!)

The London Overground “lines” (or should that be “routes”) have now been officially named. It is now the “Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside route”.

The TfL ‘Press releases’ section of the website doesn’t appear to be a full exhaustive list of their press releases, these are located on the “PRGloo” website which is closed for the public.

I'm planning on going to Riverside on 18th (having missed Crossrail's big day - though I hope to be there for the first day of through running).

Apologies if they're already in this thread, but what are the distances (miles & chains) between:
Tilbury Line Junction East and Barking Riverside Up Junction,
Riverside Up Junction and Ripple Lane West Junction,
Ripple Lane West Junction and Barking Riverside.

I see that Barking Riverside Up Junction is a timing point on RTT for trains from Barking Riverside but not trains to Barking Riverside. Could someone explain that to me, please, thanks.

Has a detailed track diagram for the Riverside extension been published, and if so, could someone post a link.

The up and down halves of the junction are quite well separated by distance, but the down junction is grade separated and conflict free, so does that perhaps mean trains don’t need to be timed there?

The route taken by up trains is more conflicting, as far as the sectional appendix shows it there seems to be a flat crossing of the eastbound entry route into the Ripple Lane sidings.

TfL are scheduled to open Barking Riverside tomorro, but have now put out a Press Release suggesting Essential Journeys only

Customers making essential journeys should check before they travel and always carry water
Transport for London is advising customers to only travel if essential on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 July, due to the high temperatures forecast.

But then add

TfL will work hard to keep as many services running as possible and is carrying out enhanced inspections to mitigate the impact of the extreme weather.

So looks like it might get some sort of record, a new line and station that is opened, but don’t want anyone to use it for first 2 days

So the GOBLIN along with the ELL are planned to operate normally today and Tuesday on the Overground network despite the weather conditions, which just happens to coincide with the opening of Barking Riverside.

Fair few people out this morning on the first train. Many doing it before midday where the heat will start to effect the rail network.

Lift was not working, we had to change trains to the other platform and a freight train had held the train rightrright after it left the ramp.

Not sure if this is one for the Barking Riverside thread or the TfL map watch but...

• Barking Riverside is incorrectly shown with an interchange symbol on the line diagrams
• All of the out-of-station interchanges including the publicised Elizabeth line connection are missing
• They've also accidentally added an interchange symbol to Beckton when they moved that branch (or maybe they assumed that all lines end with that symbol)

Service currently suspended because of signal failure at Walthamstow Queens Road.

Unlike the usual hoohah when a new line opens in London, there was nothing on the local BBC news - presumably because they don't want to encoiurage people to come out and play on it today.

The PDF version of the map linked in post 173 does indeed show an interchange to the pier.
