I am currently in the process of making myself bankrupt and if anyone can
tell me will this affect my chances of getting a job as a trainee conductor
with Scotrail, and if by some miracle I get a chance at an assesment or
an interview should I come clean and explain my situation right away?
any info would be much appreciated.

I almost certainly don't think there are any financial checks, I used to interview people for the job. There certainly is an enhanced criminal record check, I think disclosure Scotland is the agency used.

the only downside I can see is (and correct me if I am wrong) doesn't bankruptcy mean you cant have a bank account?

most if not all TOC's pay into a bank account

I'm fairly sure that one of my (Firstgroup) Guard colleagues has been through bankruptcy. I wouldn't mention it unless you are specifically asked, which is unlikely I would think. It isn't a criminal record, and it shouldn't be treated as such. Fairly simple to nominate somebody else's bank account for the salary I would have thought?

Sorry to hear about your position, best of luck with the job ;)

Thanks bestwestern and others but tbh its the best way out of a bad situation
and if I could just land a descent job all would be fine, its like hitting a reset
button on your financial life, start all over again. You do get to have a bank account although its controled by a trustee who allows you enough to live on and pay your mortgage and bills.

You have my sympathies, it can't be pleasant making that decision but as you say it can often be for the best. Certainly beats living on a shoestring for years to come I would think. I'm sure it must also be far less stigmatic nowadays, it's hardly rare any more.

With the current state of the country its not an uncommon thing now and the
thing that puts most people off is the stigma, but as you say it beats being skint and getting hounded by your debtors.

as I said it would only be the bank account that would be a problem, but even that isn't a problem really.

Good luck with the role, the only job where a financial check has been carried out for me was when I became a Special Constable.

you'll be fine, I can't see where it would come up during interview or any other point to be honest!

I can't see a credit check being necessary for such a role in honesty. Crb check probably, seems disclosure Scotland are the choice of most companys at present, although they are around a month turnaround for a check!

We seem to get our CRB checks back within a fortnight, but I'm not sure who we use, as I'm not invovled in that area myself.

I don't think that going through bankruptcy will be a problem.

I just got my crb certificate from Disclosure Scotland, and it was back to me within 2 weeks. It's quick and easy if you do it online.

Rather than declare yourself bankrupt now, talk to your creditors, and tell them you are applying for a job, and if your succesful, you will enter into an IVA. It's a far beeter route to go down as there is far less of an impact on your credit rating compared to bankruptcy.

Also, seek advice about all this from either the CAB or a local Credit Union, as they will be able to give you far better advice than I can.

Other than that, best of luck in applying for the job.

Already been down the IVA road for the past two years and unfortunately it
didnt work for me and believe me bankruptcy isnt something to be taken lightly as I have investigated all other options and this is my final and only route to unburden myself and family from our finacial hardships. But tbh I already feel the pressure lifting as I know my financial problems are coming to an end.

Right, knowing two people who work on the Railway and have declared themself Bankrupt...

You can get a bank account still but your choices are limited, also it won't count against you.
