Ah, thanks. It was a load 16 or so, so that figures. Thankfully it wasn't an ETH one that was attached that night!
According to Rail Gen 220 carried on with the 47/4 diagram, I guess it didn't matter too much in the summer as it wasn't air-cons.

FoS Day 2

On arrival at Inverness, it was very cold, but no problem as Inverness had kidnapped an LMR steamer and put her to work.
Unfortunately, a working boiler would have been useful.
It did kick into some sort of life later on, just about the time that the sun made it unnecessary.

It turned out they'd also kidnapped a no-heat LMR 47. Which was nice.

Would have headed further north with 110, but some gen had appeared which meant we needed to head for Carlisle.

Well, Carlisle via Stranraer.

I require 33102 for haulage. It works every Saturday morning. So off I went to the Churnet Valley Railway to get it in the book. My first visit to the railway.

In a blast from the past, I was bowled by a duff!

D1994 47292.JPG

47292's first working on the railway, having arrived three years ago. On the plus side, it was looking very smart, and I needed it for haulage. I guess I'll have to go back to get the Crompton. The other 33 there, 021, didn't look like it was about to work again any time soon.

At least the pubs were open on a Sunday by then....unlike in the 'seventies! If they were still closed in the afternoon, you could have had a drink in the bar of the North West Castle Hotel by claiming to be a resident guest....just like everyone else in town did in those days! :D

Sunday afternoon in Stranraer followed by a leap at Blair Atholl in the early hours. Living the high life!

Try telling people that we did this sort of thing for fun, and they just give us funny looks.

They’d need a weeks notice of the loco numbers and a hotel.

On a weekday in Stranraer you have the Grapes....a fine traditional old bar with real ale and full of old retired railwaymen and ferrymen with lots of interesting and amusing yarns to tell! ;)

That reminds me of my friend who was on a Scottish Rover doing the overnight Blair Atholl leap. He overslept and woke up as the train arrived into Newtonmore. On arrival, there was a train standing in the up platform and so he dashed over the footbridge thinking that the Glasgow bound train must be late. He was initially puzzled why there were no passenger coaches, only parcel vans when he realised it wasn’t a passenger service. He tried to go back and reboard the Inverness service but he was too late. He was now stranded at Newtonmore until the next service; I think it would have been the Royal Highlander service. The only shelter available for the next four hours was the Gents. As you say “We did this for fun”.

Ouch! That's an uncomfortable fester alright. Us Scots never had to bother with moves like that ....the locos came to us eventually!
We made daft moves down south though (as can be seen from some of my posts!) and 1C04 was a favourite rover dossing train of mine.......but it would sometimes require a bail at Newport, Cardiff, Swansea or Haverford W, depending on gen (or blind hope). In an attempt to avoid the sort of disaster you've described, I invested in what was then a pretty revolutionary if hideous Casio digital watch with an alarm on it......trouble was, it was a completely ineffective tinny alarm!

I think I've only actually been to Stranraer a handful of times.......I've been to Holyhead, Milford Haven, Fishguard and Penzance loads more times! I've only been to Kyle and Wick a few times as well!
Back then I'd always rather do a Northumbrian Ranger than a FoS!!

So anyway ...yes, Blair Atholl it was, and I didn't really like doing this but the reason was - the Stranraer loco from the previous day should, in theory, work the GSW... and it did.

This was an an ad-hoc HST substitution but can you confirm if it was 1B68 12.05 Padd-BTM, or 1B60 11.05 Padd-BTM, please. I guess each would have been 10mins or so later into Temple Meads on the booked schedule.
