I went to Norwich with a 40 a few times that year (40080 and 40172 and I think another one but my moves books are mostly non-existent from that year, I'm going on photographs!) but that day I think I was cash challenged and had 40195 to Sheffield and then went back to the Midlands for ... something or other

I *think* this (usual instamatic quality) photo is 40080 at Norwich!
40080 reached Norwich on 06/08/83. I travelled on 6 forties to Norwich that year.

Probably not, after 40-odd years of wear, tear and weathering!
I think you might be surprised.....humans have excellent facial recognition!

A humdrum day, and I was probably seated for the entirety of both journeys!

We didn't know what was on 1E58, although it became very clear when it got under the roof of Temple Meads. 404 was unwell and the fans were on continuously. It was extremely loud. Less welcome was noting that our guard forward was New Street's infamous "Butcher". However, he must have not been bothered about gripping at 2am, because we didn't see him.

At New Street the TOPS reports were being shared around, and the gods of new 47s were smiling on me for the second Saturday running.

40s that I saw at Norwich that year were:

25/6/83 - 40152
2/7/83 - 40034
16/7/83 - 40129
30/7/83 - 40172
6/8/83 - 40080
13/8/83 - 40001

The other days that I saw the Manchester - Yarmouth without a 40 these were the locos

4/6/83 - 37249
23/7/83 - 37065
20/8/83 - 37082
27/8/83 - 47266
10/9/83 - 47074

Railgen Archive has some other workings listed

28/5/83 - 47194
11/6/83 - 47068
18/6/83 - 47325
3/9/83 - 40082

40082 was 09/07/83, not 03/09/83, but failed at Little Bytham. I was on that too but managed to recover the day by leaping Peterborough - York to have 40035 into KX.

thanks for the corrections - I misread the entry in RailGen Archive - it was indeed 40058. I was on the North Wales Coast at the time so didnt see it.

A couple of whoppers out on the Poole line today

The fact that the two trains stop at local shacks, but not the same one, makes this slightly odd move necessary

My day was not quite as exciting as @D1511's, thanks to working early shift at Reading Booking Office, but on finishing the required 47188 was seen and quickly taken to Basingstoke, and by good fortune the also required 47198 was on the train back!

Perhaps this day was not quite as exciting, but then again, I never had a required 47 turn up at my place of work! :D
I never had 101 :'(
Ah well, we all missed a few...... o_O
I got a few decent tractors on that Chesterfield service.....

At this point it was suggested that we get off as "1G61 behind is 47049!". So we did. And then "due to a locomotive failure...". Thanks! However...

There must have been a 20+ minute delay to the incoming WCML service at Carstairs, allowing me to catch it and get back to Edinburgh sooner. It certainly wasn't an intended -20 move!

I think the train in question was a through service from Poole, and was often in the region of 20+ minutes late by Carstairs.
I once had the same loco (a 26) on the 16:10 Edinburgh - Carstairs and returned with the 16:27 Carstairs - Edinburgh.
Carstairs portions were often good value for NB locos. Late running of the train from the south might cause disruption to the portion loco workings, so occasionally the Carstairs ballast loco would be fired up and put to good use.

I think you are right about that service being the Poole, or it may have been the Harwich PQ. A lot of scope for delays along either route! I will check my 1H8x's in storage to confirm.....
In addition to the Carstairs ballast loco being drafted into emergency passenger service from time to time, a loco failure would often result in a rescue engine being sent from Motherwell.....and what ML sent down was generally pretty tasty! I suspect that was what had happened in post #6887 above and again below - although they might have had the decency to send a different one!!

A while back I was looking at the Rail-Gen page for this day. According to that, 47330 (which was at the time one of my last 15 or so 47s) did 1M88 Poole-Manchester from Reading. How did I not know about this? It would have arrived at New Street half an hour after I left to go to Norwich. Oh well, I did pick it up the year after, so nothing lost.

The 16xx was indeed the portion off 1S39 from Poole up to May 1986, when the Poole was changed to run an hour or so later. In 1987 it was the 1727 Carstairs-Edinburgh.

Thanks for confirming! No great shock it was 20 late really!
