This was the last time that I had a Deltic to Hull. Taking the 1940 to Hull would normally get you stranded there because the engine and stock would go ECS to York. However, on Fridays during the Summer there was an escape route via a 2340 service to Doncaster. This was a through service to Paignton and at Doncaster it would be attached to a portion from Leeds.

I went to watch Man Utd play Arsenal, the result, 0-0. The traction home made up for the disappointing match.

Finsbury Park must have been struggling for motive power turning out Goyles for 2230 & 0005 services out of KX. Later in the day I took 46001 voluntarily. It was in a good cause because I knew the next service would be Deltic hauled.

I still needed the Newquay branch for a 47. There was a rumour going around that the following week (the last of the summer season, and possibly the last loco hauled trains) the turns would be fixed for 50s. As it turned out, that was nonsense, but I couldn't risk it.

Now a problem arose. Both 1V22 and 1V23 were 50s (1V23 was booked for one, but had been shown as a 47 earlier). Oh well, down the back of the train and forget about it.

That's right. I *think* the Milton Keynes -Penzance (1V36/1M82) was the only one during 1987 and more were used later.

Yes that one I remember clearly. The Rose Grove (I think) - Paignton with a pair of 31's was normally Mk3's. And I recall seeing the Manchester Pullman set used too.

I have a photo of two blue 31/4s (417 with white stripe, at the lead) with a Mk3 IC rake, leaving Birmingham New Street and bound for the South West; Paignton IIRC.
Most weeks the Goyles never made it to Paignton and back.

Someone once posted details of the catalogue of failures, no-shows and rescues that the services endured.

In 1988 there were 3 pairs of 31s diagrammed to Paignton
  • 1V26 2340 Liverpool-Paignton (from Bham) / 1M37 0840 Paignton-Manchester (to Bham)
  • 1V45 0918 Manchester-Paignton (from Bham) / 1M65 1537 Paignton-Liverpool (to Bham)
  • 1V46 0933 Stockport-Paignton (from Bham) / 1M63 1835 Paignton-Wolves (to Bham)
On only two summer Saturdays did all three trains get 31s and made it there and back. There were 21 failures in total. My favourite one was where one of the two failed on both 1V45 and 1V46, both pairs were removed at Bristol, and when 1M65 arrived back at Bristol that afternoon, they bolted the two good ones from the morning together and got rid of them that way!

The Western’s Regional Operations Manager attached a fairly damning list of the carnage when he wrote to his Midland oppo telling him why he needed to replace the 31s.

It seemed to get as big a circulation as the Scottish ROM’s letter describing sector management as having ‘the business acumen of boy scouts on bob-a-job week’.

The last day of the Summer timetable and no-heat locos are thin on the ground; I think 31101 and 47100 being the only ones for me today.

IIRC I was planning to head north with Deltic 8, however I was bowled at York when it was removed for some unfavourable traction. I decided to head south but things didn’t get any better when I got bowled again; 46038 working the 1915 Aberdeen-KX. With trains being diverted via Cambridge I was able to cut short my journey at Hitchin returning to York with Deltic 22. Later in the day I was bowled for the third time at Grantham when a 47 was turned out on the 1605 KX-York. I waited a further hour for the 1705 to Hull, changing at Doncaster for an HST to York.

Metro down to Central station to see what's on 1M73 (1120 Newcastle-Liverpool).

A bit of context: at the time, this was the only Pennine booked for a 47 out of Newcastle. Indeed, only two northbounds were booked one - 1E88, the 1605 from Liverpool, and 1E59, the 1805 from Liverpool and return working of 1M73. Bar this and the Newcastle-Penzance, everything else going south in the daytime *should* have been a 45, although obviously that wasn't always the case.

Walks on to the station, peer across ... yes it's a 47. Buy ticket. Walk across bridge, saunter down platform ... wait, what????

47212 1M73 Newcastle-Liverpool
47212 1E59 Liverpool-Newcastle

This was especially good as a couple of weeks beforehand I had spent a Summer Saturday flailing across to the ECML to have required 312 on the Yarmouth-Newcastle - I may even have had pair of 31s to get there - and missed 212 through New Street after it replaced a failure. And this was the only time I had 212 (indeed, according to Railgen it only worked one more "gettable" train until I gave up in 1989) but 360 miles isn't bad I suppose.

Following my early arrival into Edinburgh and with the next scheduled Deltic departure not due for over five hours I filled my time with a triangular trip to Glasgow and Stirling. I was hoping this move would produce some class 26/27s but ended up quite the opposite. My journey with 40113 transpired to be my final class 40 in Scotland. It was also one of the last workings for 40113, having only another week in service.
