A spotting trip to Glasgow including a tour of St Rollox Works. This was my first experience of the class 27 push-pull service, usually a very good high speed thrash!

Into East Anglia for a bit of class 37 action, however at Bishops Stortford I was distracted by “Apple 4” which was standing in the southbound bay on a goods train. IIRC it only consisted of two coal wagons and a brake van. I had my camera out and was setting myself up for a photo when the secondman called out to me. He was a fellow basher and he invited me across into the cab. I took a short cab ride to Harlow Town before I resumed my chase for 37s. By mid afternoon I went over to London Bridge to cover the East Grinstead commuters where unusually an Eastleigh 33 made an appearance. Over to Waterloo and the Channel Islands Boat Train turned up trumps again with a required 73, followed by 50008 to Andover. I was now aiming for Bristol for the 0114 to Milford and conveniently the 2300 Paddington-Bristol was scheduled to be loco hauled rather than its usual HST, so I worked my way over to Reading to intercept it. I was hoping that the train to Bristol would be hauled by a class 50 but was bowled by a Duff and to make matters worse it was one from the Eastern Region!

During the school holidays the Scarborough Spa Steam Train was running twice a day from York. My interest was not in the Kettle (Sir Nigel Gresley) hauling the train but the loco that would take the stock forward to Leeds as an additional service. Today York kicked out non-boilered and required 31141.

Having just been bowled with a Duff on my inbound train from Reading I was greeted by the unwanted sight of 47131 at the head of my train to Milford Haven. I decided to to stick with the train and was rewarded with three 37s in West Wales. Later in the day I went across to Southampton in the search of class 33s, when I came across 73134 unexpectedly working a Waterloo-Bournemouth service.

A family holiday to St Ives and I had persuaded my Dad to travel via London to reach our destination. The first loco may have been rather disappointing but the second certainly wasn’t. WESTERN RELIANCE would become my highest mileage Class 52! (299 miles if you are interested).

After spending the previous afternoon and evening covering the Portsmouth-Bristol services I found myself on the Waterloo-Weymouth Mail trains again. And again with having little sleep I missed the Eastleigh stop and awoke in Bournemouth. It didn’t really cost me anything because I soon picked up a couple of required 33s before I headed back to York for a laundry change. Less than three hours at home and I was heading back to London, aiming for the 2300 Paddington-Bristol which today was hauled by 50046.

86033 00.15 Crewe - Mallaig (Crewe - Mossend)
????? 00.15 Crewe - Mallaig (Mossend - Cowlairs)
????? 00.15 Crewe - Mallaig (Cowlairs - Queen Street)

We were in a sleeper and, having imbibed at Crewe, were asleep until Craigendoran so if anyone can advise locos for the Mossend - Cowlairs and Cowlairs - Queen Street legs I'd be very grateful.

27042 00.15 Crewe - Mallaig (now a portion of 06.00 Queen Street - Mallaig)
27203 06.00 Queen Street - Mallaig (Fort William - Mallaig)

Ferry 12.30 Mallaig - Kyle of Lochalsh

At the time it wasn't obligatory to travel via Armadale and then bus to Kyleakin, there was a direct sailing 12.30 Thursday/Friday only.

26042 17.55 Kyle of Lochalsh - Inverness.

We paid the supplement (£2? I think) to travel in the ex Caledonian Saloon No 41.
Originally built 1893. though much modified since, it was well worth the extra. The hostess providing a commentary was English, Lancastrian I think. Apparently the Scottish lady she had replaced had too strong an accent to be understood by Americans.

40167 23.50 Inverness - Stirling

We were on holiday in St Ives a couple of weeks after you. I definitely saw Westerns - I even wrote the names down - but I will never know if I had any for haulage.

That’s a shame that you cannot remember if you were hauled by any. This reminds me of my first family holiday to Newquay in 1971. My older brother had taken me spotting sometime in late 1970/early 1971 so I was soon able to identify several types of locomotive. I was however intrigued by the different types of locos that could be seen away from home. In particular was a battered looking Warship in maroon livery. I remember its name “Druid”. For many years I thought that it must have been at Bristol Temple Meads. It pulled up alongside us for sometime as we waited to change trains. However after going through some family possessions after my Mum passed away I found a post card that I had sent to my Gran. I could now work out the exact date that we travelled. It would have been the Friday 20th August evening / Saturday 21st August morning. I could then work out the trains we had travelled on. These would have been 1820 Newcastle-Penzance and the 2028 Manchester Piccadilly-Newquay. I then realised that I had seen Druid at Plymouth rather than Bristol. Furthermore I strongly suspect that D815, as I now know its identity, was probably waiting to re-engine my train to Newquay. However unless someone can confirm this I will never know if I had a Warship for haulage on the mainline.

Having had 40167 on the 23.50 (7th) Inverness - Queen Street as far as Stirling we took the Edinburgh portion forward for what then became a very disjointed and disrupted day. My travelling companion became separated from his luggage which we then pursued up the ECML, breaking the journey several times in order to enquire and retrieve. This he eventually did at Peterborough that afternoon.

We did however achieve two planned elements of the day. We travelled past Toton on The Master Cutler which (I think) was the only passenger service so routed at the time. Also the deliberate inclusion of the only class 03 service train move at Ipswich in the small hours.

I worked my way out of South Wales after a good morning chasing 37s. In the evening I continued on towards Birmingham to get myself into a good position to cover class 40s working the Saturday services in North Wales. However in retrospect it looks like that I’ve started Duff bashing!

I had been at work in London and was planning to catch the 1730 to York. By now my red pen was in semi-retirement, however I dusted it down and delaying my return home I had “The Badger” for the first time.

Having had the 03179 move at Ipswich, on the 23.20 ex Peterborough service, we continued into and back out of Liverpool Street in darkness, prior to our main object of the day photographing the remaining Class 03 duties in East Anglia. We had heard rumours of their impending demise.

47117 02.xx Ipswich - Liverpool Street (service ex Norwich)
47156 04.30 Liverpool Street - Ipswich

DMUs Ipswich - Lowestoft - Norwich - Yarmouth - Norwich (11 different 03's photted).

31134 13.16 Norwich - March
37086 15.59 Ely - Kings Lynn
37086 17.30 Kings Lynn - Liverpool Street
87032 20.30 Euston - Crewe

This was the last day of our 1980 ALR so, as the BBC used to say, there will now be a short intermission....

My plan was to head into North Wales however I didn’t quite get there, managing to pick up three required 40s without the need of visiting the Principality. In the evening I went to Shrewsbury to cover the 25s on the returning service from Aberystwyth. I nearly came to grief here because the train was running late and I only just made the last train out of Wolverhampton by a couple of minutes.

A weird old Summer Saturday chasing alleged big 47s around that never turned up.

148 was a bonus, but the alleged 47314 on the next train was ...

The family holiday to our favoured destination. Tonight the train was hauled by green liveried 1895 (47376), my first Duff for haulage. At the time it was allocated to Thornaby and more at home hauling oil tanks than coaching stock. 1895 gave way at Plymouth to Peak 47 (45116).

Another disappointing night for me on the Preston-Crewe drags with 47463 appearing on my train. I decided to leave the train at Rugby and drop back to Birmingham where the daytime Euston services were due to be dragged to Nuneaton. Things didn’t improve for me with another 47/4 making an appearance. I decided to cut my losses and moved onto Skegness. After a successful evening there I headed into London and onto Paddington. I was intending to head west on the Down Midnight, however a required 50017 was turned out on the Sundays only 2300 to Plymouth. There was a problem; the train was made up of air-conditioned stock, it was wedged and it’s scheduled arrival into Plymouth would be around 4am. I could have left the train at Reading but didn’t want to take the risk of being bowled by a Duff on the “Down Midnight”. So another uncomfortable night with little sleep!

Try 37103 for the Norwich-Yarmouth and return working not 37107.

ALR Day 10. After spending a night at home I intended to travel to London on the 0805 service, however I had difficulty waking up. Missing this train I decided to travel in the opposite direction to Edinburgh. From here I took non boilered 27027 to Perth where I dropped onto a pair of 26s to Inverness. I should have found myself in a little trouble here because at the head of the 1930 Euston was a Duff. I had resigned myself to taking it to Perth, however about 20 minutes before departure the Duff was detached and disappeared southwards. In its place the pair of 26s that I had had previously were coupled up. IIRC the Duff had gone to rescue the “Clansman” which had failed somewhere south of Newtonmore. At Perth I let the 26s go and joined 40167 on the 2250 to Euston. I found a compartment to myself and crashed out, oblivious that the loco had failed at Coatbridge.

During the school holidays the Scarborough Spa Steam Train was regularly running from York. After returning from Scarborough the kettle would be removed in favour of a diesel which would haul the train to Leeds as an additional service. Today York kicked out Deltic 17.

Whilst on the family holiday I managed to persuade everyone that we should visit Penzance. The rest of the family were reluctant but gave in to my wishes. The time we spent there gives an indication of how impressed they were with the town but I wasn’t bothered. The train out of Penzance was hauled by WESTERN LADY, the last time I had a Class 52 for haulage in BR service.

I arrived into Euston, unaware of the reason for my late arrival. It was not until I bumped into another basher who had travelled on the same train that I realised that 40167 had failed at Coatbridge and was assisted by a pair of 37s to Mossend Yard. From London I made my way to Swansea to cover a Pembroke Dock service that was being loco hauled vice DMU.
