Am I the only person who hasn't baled in the centre road at York? :D
No, me neither! Although I did once leave a train while stopped on the Up Avoiding Line at Didcot......
Possibly. I once did a move from the up centre road onto the down centre road which at least had the advantage of being invisible from either platform.
I've never had to either. Though I've done just adjacent to Saltley depot, when some sadist in control replaced our nice no-heat 47 with a 45/1.
A former colleague of mine did that and almost lost their job as a result.
I've never done any of those moves....but I may be the only person on here who's baled out of the Summer Saturday Fort William-Euston at Cowlairs North Junction in 1983. I and a friend had originally planned to change at Dumbarton Central for an EMU back to Hyndland, where I was living at the time. However - fuelled by two or three cans of McEwan's Export from the buffet car - we decided that we would rather enjoy the company of 37 192 all the way to Queen Street. It was only when passing through Singer that I remembered that the Saturday night train didn't go into that station. With the connivance of the guard - who was considerably more drunk than we were - we climbed down from the brake vehicle while the loco crews were changing over.

There then followed a difficult scramble up the cutting side, through a hedge into somebody's front garden - hoping that they didn't have a large fierce dog - tiptoeing down their gravel driveway and out through their front gate onto Ashfield Street....where the new Ashfield station is now situated. Unfortunately we were too late for the last buses in that part of Glasgow, so we were faced with a very long walk (about 2 hours) through some very scary parts of the city (looking at you Possilpark!), before arriving home at almost 02 00. The things that we did when we were young and foolish! o_O

I headed south to Birmingham and then onto Northampton. This morning the juice was off and the local services were being hauled by Class 25s. After a profitable morning I headed out of Kings Cross to Skegness to find out what was on offer there. Scoring with four more new engines on “The Skeggies” I rounded off the day by heading into East Anglia.

After a brief jaunt into South Wales I returned to Kings Cross to resume my Deltic activities. I took Deltic 8 on the 0100 sleeper. This had the benefit of through sleeping cars to Edinburgh and with an arrival there sometime after 9, I was ready to start the day fully refreshed. I travelled south with Deltic 22 with the intention of going all the way to London but as what happened two days earlier the Deltic was removed at Newcastle. Fortunately for me I was awake today to see the proceedings and was able to leave the train there. It was however a blessing in disguise because after heading back to Edinburgh I returned to Newcastle to find Deltic 22 working the 2120 to Darlington via Sunderland.

Some years earlier in my late 'teens I baled from the 17.25 summer Sat Fort William to Kings Cross on the up goods at Bellgrove - on a Freedom of Scotland and planning an overnight trip from Edinburgh to Carlisle and back (23.45 from Edinburgh) when, having made the booked call at Queen St Low Level, we were put onto the Goods at High St Jn and stopped opposite Bellgrove station to await assistance. As the clock ticked on it became obvious I would not make it to Edinburgh in time for what should have been a very comfortable connection into the 23.45. Having spoken to the Guard who responded 'I didn't see you' I made my way across the down goods and up main to the platform at Bellgrove, took an EMU back to Queen St and across to Central to 23.50 Bristol as far as Carlisle.

Another occasion when a Queen St Guard said 'I didn't see you' involved baling on the down branch at Craigendoran from the 18.35 Qn St to Oban once it became obvious there was to be a lengthy delay and I would get home much quicker on foot from there rather than waiting for the train to eventually reach my planned destination of Helensburgh Upper.

My logic behind telling the Guard what I planned to do was to avoid departing unannounced and then being spotted potentially resulting in some follow up whilst the Guards, by not seeing me were protecting themselves from any blame in this conspiracy.

The 2320 Peterborough-Ipswich had the added benefit of a Class 03 haulage. The station pilot would shunt the train onto the 2345 Norwich-Liverpool St. IIRC the train was scheduled to arrive into London at 0400 where there was a five minute connection onto a Liverpool St-Norwich routed via Cambridge. I believe the train arrived on time but I woke from my slumber having missed my five minute connection. I was now out of position to cover the early morning services out of Cambridge. I don’t think it was a costly mistake because I was still able to pick up non-boilered 31299 and 37079. Later in the afternoon 31211 disgraced itself by failing near Whittlesford. To my benefit the rescue loco 37033 was required. I returned home that evening for a night in bed.

Darlington station was not one of my favourite places to fester, especially for an overnight service (Apologies to those who may disagree). 40086 arrived on the next service to Edinburgh so I took it to the Scottish capital. The regular move from here was the 0435 to Glasgow where I decided to head out onto the West Highland Line. On my return to Glasgow 37112 was attached to the front of the train at Crianlarich, the only time that I have had a pair of 37s (excluding Top n Tail workings that have since become a regular operation).

I am a bit surprised by your comment re lack of 37s in pairs.
Did you never do the Highland Sleepers in the early 90s when they were booked for pairs of 37s + genny van? 37505, 37510, 37683 and 37685 were the "dedicated" locos, and received Inter City livery for this purpose, but in reality NB 37s would often turn up in their place.

I am assuming that as 47206 wasn’t required I ignored it. If I had realised that it was putting in some effort I would’ve recorded it. Were you on the same train?
I will amend my records. Cheers

The 90’s passed me by, family commitments! In fact I have never had a 37/5, 6, 7 or 8 for haulage.

Meant to post this yesterday!

We were very much spotters in these days, but had just started the bashing thing... I have no train details, though some should be obvious
We didn't do Sunday by the looks of it, and the page with Thursday and Friday has fallen out of my book, because the next page is 1st August!

55002 worked the 0940 KX-ED; I joined the train at Durham. I was bowled out by 47574 at Newcastle where it replaced 55022 on the 0910 Dundee-KX.
According to Napier Chronicles 55010 worked the 1205 KX-YK. I am assuming 47422 worked the 1047 YK-KX.
If you look at the Railgenarchive website I am sure you will be able to work out some of the trains that you travelled on.

I note you also had 45020 that day on the Newcastle-Swansea, as we did, and so I presume 45016 and 45072 on previous days were also on that. The Stratford 47s (018/115) will have been on the boat train no doubt.

After getting into Kings Cross I went over to Paddington to try and pick up some Old Oak 31s on the Oxford commuter services. I then made my first journey via Stroud to Gloucester before heading onto Cardiff for some 37 action.

After having 40086 on the Kings Cross-Edinburgh service the night previously, I had it again working the southbound service. This time however its boiler failed and was replaced by a 31 at Peterborough. Looking back at my notes I am puzzled as to why I got off 55014 at Selby, return to York on a DMU and then take 47553 to Darlington before heading back south with 55021.

I was hoping to pick up some required Class 50s but I only succeeded in scoring with 50015. I had to take a bus out to Crediton to pick up Laira’s 25052 on a service from Barnstaple before taking another 25 to Newton Abbot. The hunt for new Class 50s wasn’t going too well and by the early afternoon I was having my second run of the day with 50015. My intention was to enjoy this classic journey as far as Newton Abbot, however because of my body requiring some sleep I awoke as the train entered Bodmin Road! Cornwall was not a place I wanted to be in at this time so I headed east on the next available train. After several overnights on my ALR I was obviously quite tired so rather than planning a long overnight journey I decided to do the opposite by covering the Weymouth-Waterloo Mail train where I would be lucky to expect no more than an hour’s sleep!

The last day of my 1981 ALR so I headed onto Glasgow to cover the 0810 Glasgow-Scarborough. I was hoping that Eastfield’s 37151 would be replaced by a Deltic at Edinburgh but 40086 did the honours. I waited for Deltic 22 on the Edinburgh-Plymouth which I took to York before returning back to Edinburgh with it. One final journey of my ALR found Deltic 22 again at the head of my train to York, however for the third time in six days the Deltic is removed from my train at Newcastle, for a very disappointing class 46.

Covering the overnight Weymouth-Waterloo-Bournemouth mail trains meant little chance of any sleep. I successfully managed to leave the up service at Woking with the intention of taking the down service to Eastleigh where I could connect into the 04xx to Portsmouth. I failed at this waking up in Bournemouth. My next move was to cover the 0834 Woking-Waterloo that was booked loco and stock. My Waterloo bound train was not scheduled to stop at Woking so I planned to change trains at Basingstoke. Before the Winchester stop I went into the toilet to freshen up a little, however when I came out the train had filled up considerably from its stop there. The train was now pulling into Basingstoke and rather than heading for one of the closest exits I turned in the opposite direction through the gangway into the next carriage. This however was a buffet car and I had to make my way along the corridor to an exit. The train had now stopped and I had become stuck in the corridor because the carriage was quickly filling with more people boarding. By the time I had fought my way to the door the train was leaving so I was stuck on it until I got to Waterloo. Fortunately once I got to Waterloo I did have time to catch a local service back to Hersham before I got my third required 73 of the day.

I was heading for North Wales in the search of required Class 40s, however as soon as I had found out what was working I had to return to York to pick up 40178 on the Newcastle-Blackpool, which I took as far as Manchester. After picking up 40030 between Chester & Crewe I was still struggling to find my way into North Wales especially when a required 83 took me to Liverpool. Taking a Merseyrail service to Rock Ferry and a DMU to Chester I finally crossed the border and picked up 40100, my third of the day.

Sunday 3rd August 1980

This was the first day of my 1980 ALR and I was hoping to get a class 40 on the Preston-Crewe drags. No 40s on the drags for me today as I ended up with 47571. For some reason I bailed out at Oxford Road only to wait for another 47/4 to Crewe. On my arrival here there was a required non-boilered Duff waiting to drag an 86 southbound so without consulting my bible I jumped aboard. I took the train to Stafford but had by now realised that I could not get a service back to Crewe in time for the first service into North Wales. The whole point of my journey to Crewe was to be able to cover class 40s working along the North Wales coast. Fortunately a Llandudno bound ADEX stopped, another Duff, but hopefully it would get me back to Crewe. The train did get me back to Crewe however it stopped in the through road. I didn’t really want to take the Duff along the North Wales Coast so noting that the station was fairly quiet I bailed out of the train and jumped quickly onto the platform. Another station “ Through Road” in the book! The rest of the day went to plan including a diversion via Wigan on the Bangor-Manchester.

Terminating at Stafford due to crew issues led to me having to suffer my first Voyager between Stafford and Birmingham, what a hideous experience that was.

During the summer months if the Doncaster Works Test Train was unavailable then the 0848 Doncaster-Edinburgh service would be used to test ex-works locos. Today 31226 was on test accompanied by 40197. The use of LMR based 47/4s on Kings Cross services was probably down to low availability of ER locos.
