Oh yes, lots of units with a tiny smattering of loco haulage.

Oh yes, lots of units with a smattering of loco haulage. IIRC the intention of the day was to visit Crewe Works. You had to get there by 1400 on a Sunday to be taken around. With such a late start we didn’t get to the entrance until about 1430 so were unable to go in!

Yes, I did that Crewe Works visit a few times. Imagine turning up now at any of the equivalents and expecting to wander around.

Very nice!
We went down to the back of the train when the 37s attached, and there was an excellent moment as the train passed through one of the Birmingham suburban stations (King's Norton, I think). A photographer had clearly taken a photo of 47011, and was just putting his camera away when he realised that there was another 3,500hp on the rear ... cue much comedic juggling of equipment ...

A bit of a unit bash this evening! After taking a required Duff to Keighley I headed into Bradford to view the loco on the 2120 to KX which would be already coupled up to the stock by 1900. In some ways I was hoping that the loco would not be required because it meant hanging around for a couple of hours until it’s departure. 31184 was required so I filled my time with a return trip to Leeds.

It was a good evening bash but I only did it a few times. I would have tried it more often if you could guarantee a forty out and back to/from Settle.
I see you didn’t bail out at Settle and missed out on 40136. I presume you were able to catch up with it at a later date.

Yes, 40136 was already dud for me, but I would have joined you on the Settle move if I knew it was coming. Split box 40s were always a bit special.

A spotting trip to Crewe was rather uneventful until my journey home. The expected Peak on the Liverpool-Newcastle service should have got me into York around 1930, however this plan disappeared into the darkness of Stalybridge Tunnel when 46036 came to a stand. After some considerable time there was the noise of another loco, the recognisable sound of a class 24/25. The loco buffered up to the rear of the train and began to push the train out of the tunnel. The train continued to Diggle where it was routed into the loop. I think the plan was for the loco to run round the train and haul the train towards Leeds. The crew seemed to be having great difficulties and after further delay the loco continued to push the train to Huddersfield. It was only here that I was able to identify the class 24 which had been acting as the Manchester Victoria Pilot Engine. The 24 was released from the train and Knottingley based 47372 was added to the front of the train. At Leeds the 47 removed the errant 46 and both were replaced by 40150. My eventual arrival into York was around 2145.

Indeed it was. IIRC, it worked a van train in the day time, and the coast sleeper portion overnight.

From memory, wasn't 31418 unique? I think it was converted from a "skinhead" 31/0, and thus had an 80mph maximum speed and a full set of discs. The lower maximum speed (stop sniggering) was why it was kept on local work which didn't involve any high speed work.
Can anyone confirm my memory of this?

It was originally numbered D5522, making it the third 31/1 numerically. It was at the time unique being the only skinhead 31/4. It probably just performed like a 31/0, restricting its use to local duties.;)

Yes and no.

D5522 was built with discs and 80 mph maximum speed, but it was not a class 31/0. It was fitted with ETH in 1973, and renumbered to 31418, at that time it was the only ETH loco with either of these features.

31418 was originally allocated to Cricklewood, but moved to Finsbury Park in October 1975. At that time Gateshead had two class 31/4s, 31406 and 31411, mainly for ECS moves to and from Heaton, but also usually working the sleeper portion via Sunderland. In April 1976 the Eastern Region swapped over 31411 and 31418, it does seem likely that this was to get 31418 away from the London end of the ECML where the Finsbury Park class 31/4s had regular use on class 1 passenger trains that required 90 mph running.

31418 was regeared for 90 mph maximum speed in 1982. Then, in 1984, three more "skinheads" were fitted with ETH, and 31418 was no longer unique.

I think you may be confusing it with D5518 (later 31 101), which was originally a 'toffee Apple' class 30/0 (later class 31/0) until rebuilt as a class 31/1 following collision damage sometime in the late '60s/early '70s. The rebuild involved the fitting of conventional control equipment and new cabs with four character head code panels. Incidentally - for some reason - this loco was used on the Derby day royal train from Victoria to Tattenham Corner on at least one occasion following the demise of the ex-Southern Railway 'Hornby' class 70 electric locos.

The D5518 rebuild was in 1967. On arrival back at Stratford they used D5518 as one of their Royal locos.

In those days Royal Trains required steam heat, and that was why class 31s were used on the Derby Day train to Tattenham Corner. Following the demise of the class 70 electric locos the Southern had no locos with steam heat. D5518 in 1969 was the first time that a class 31 was used on the Derby Day train to Tattenham Corner, and class 31s worked the train every year from 1969 to 1977.

It prompts a question: How many 31/1s were built with an 80mph maximum speed? I thought it was just the 31/0s which were so restricted, but evidently I am wrong.

Thanks for that information.

D5520-34 were the Brush Type 2s built with 80 mph maximum speed. The first 90 mph Brush Type 2 was D5535.

At the time this was a rare foray into North Wales in search of some class 40 action.

Seven years ago I was drinking on the top floor of Harvey Nichols Manchester, so I'm guessing I would've had to take a train there (and back home!) I probably still had a season ticket back then, as I worked in the Manchester office until December of that year.
