This railtour was from Nottingham to Sellafield via Woodhead, with stops for shed visits at Dinting and Carnforth. Slides taken that day indicate a Duff (unrecorded) was used to Carnforth and back. The visit to the R&E Railway was an option instead of Sellafield, which was a dire choice on the day with open stock and rainfall. 4472 was substituting for a Class 5, hence the unusual steam combination!

I thought that the Six Bells Junction website might provide the missing Duff gen for your railtour but sadly not.

Well, whatever you had it wasn't 43079 - that had been a FGW power car for over 5 years by that date. So the top gen is that you had 43???+43???...

So it looks like my OP needs amending, plain ‘HST’ should suffice!

That certainly was a rarity. At that time I was a guard at Brighton and regularly swapped shifts to work 1V22 as far as Salisbury, albeit usually on a Monday-Friday. I was once diverted via Eastleigh as a result of a fatality, but don't recall a Reading diversion. Maybe I was on leave in Italy at the time?

Looks like a normal day, but it was an unusual one - the first day of loco-haulage on the Transpennine route since who knows when that there were no 45s in use. The new sectorised service, supposedly with PTPA pool 47s, had started earlier in the week, but until the Thursday, Gateshead and Allerton had been throwing 45/1s that they had lying around out on trains, presumably hoping to get rid of them. On this day, all the trains were hauled by the "correct" locomotives, and Gateshead pushed their 45/1 out on the Newcastle-Poole, where it promptly failed at Tyne Yard. With an evil sense of humour, Saltley still found 45113 and sent it back on the Poole-Newcastle.

Seems to have been a 1984 thing. I have in my notes:
33061 10/02/1984 1Z63 1618 Cardiff Central to London Paddington additional (sadly I was at work that day so only managed Reading to London Paddington on this train)
33008 13/05/1984 1O93 1755 Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour (I had from Bristol TM to Basingstoke via Bath, Swindon and Reading West Junction to Oxford Road Junction curve)
33018 29/07/1984 1O81 1230 Taunton to Portsmouth Harbour (via Bath, Swindon, Reading West Junction, Reading General (RM)) which I only had from Reading to Basingstoke as I had been at work that day

As an aside I managed the Berks and Hants route by jumping on an eastbound train at Newton Abbot hauled by 33008 on 12 April 1980. It turned out to be hauling a returning ADEX from Plymouth to Clapham Junction non stop back to the SR by way of the Frome and Westbury avoiding lines to Reading then Ascot and Richmond. Oops! An unexpected (cough) 197 miles!

xotGD: Steam loco number Union Pacific Thirty-nine Eighty-five. :D Does that help. There were plenty of gradients on the route of AMTKS Desert Wind though the steepest, Cajon Pass, was downhill. The E9 diesels were provided for additional brake force for the 21 coach Union Pacific excursion train. UP3985 did tackle the 2.2% grade a few days later as a separate excursion.
